To concerned friends and family:
I live on the Space Coast, which is on the east side of Florida. We will be getting very heavy winds and incredible amounts of rain. This WILL be a serious storm for my community, and there will be damage. There may be casualties, even in my area. However, evacuation for me is ill-advised because the roads are full - Tampa is evacuating eastwards as well as northwards, so I will likely be hosting friends and family at my house to get them out of harm's way.
I've secured my house and am currently securing my property - many of you may know I am serious about gardening, so there's a lot of work to do, and it needs to be done by tonight. I'll be ship-shape by then, and will be cozy indoors watching the show over the next few days. Earlier this year, I installed hurricane-grade acrylic panels over my front windows, so I'll have a front-row seat.
To help alleviate your concern, please keep in mind that as a native-born Floridian, hurricane preparedness is a well-exercised reflex. I have: A large generator, 200 amp-hours of battery backup, and a 1.5 kw inverter. My water comes from my well, which can run on the generator while recharging my battery backup. To stay cool in Florida without power, I'm 10 steps from my swimming pool.
If you are interested in how things look from where I am, I invite you to visit my 24/7 rabbitry live-stream. I have a camera aimed across my garden towards the wooded lot next door. There are some very tall trees in that direction which I do not expect will be there by next week. My stream will likely go down during the storm, but you're welcome to watch the carnage until it does. I expect to be without power for days to weeks, as many of the linemen are still out of town helping with Helene recovery.
