We are a volunteer team to help raise the funding for the next Augusta County Sheriff’s Office K9 so current K9 Rico can retire with his handler. The handler of K9 Rico has left the force and K9 Rico has the opportunity to retire early and join his handler.

I was lucky enough to meet wonderful Roscoe on Monday as his fantastic rescuers brought him in for a little assessment and training.
He’s an amazingly enthusiastic and jolly little fellow, friendly, outgoing and playful.

Michele Maughan, Ph.D., will host the meeting with us and give us an introduction to UDC. Read more about Michele below:
"Michele Maughan, Ph.D., is a contract research scientist and program manager at the US Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Chemical Biological Center (CBC) in the Olfactory Sciences group at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. In this role, Dr. Maughan, provides subject matter expertise on canine scent detection and training aids, explosive and other emerging CBRNE threats, sensor technologies, and research, development, test and evaluation of Military Working Dog and Homeland Security canines. In addition to being a scientist, Michele is also a certified explosives detection dog (EDD) handler, currently working on developing her second EDD from puppy to operational canine for R&D projects. Dr. Maughan earned her PhD in Molecular Genetics & Immunology at the University of Delaware and started specializing in canine olfaction and detection."

This lovely lady is Chiquita! She is a two year old german shepherd and in search of her forever home! Chiquita is both food and toy motivated and loves to work and loves to play! She has a great foundation of obedience and comes with FREE training!
She has been training with the Winkler Dog Training Institute since October of 2022 as part of a rehabilitation for a few unwanted behaviors.
She would have the most success with an active owner who is willing to take the time to build trust and clear communication. To ensure her success with her new owner the Winkler Dog Training Institute and its team of trainers will have as many sessions as we see fit to properly introduce her, how to continue her success, and her plethora of commands.
Our goal is to work with her new owner consistently to ensure the best possible outcome for both Chiquita’s and your future together.

Introducing a toy into training is a great way to spruce things up! Chiquita has opened up tremendously and we love seeing her have fun and also be able to learn at the same time!

A fun game to teach your dog is “two-toy”! It’s exciting and fun for both handler and dog, it increases the value of the toys and the interaction with the handler. It is also very beneficial in keeping conflict over releasing a high value toy at a minimum. We consider this technique a crucial part of training when toys are used as reward! It once ended with Chiquita barking, lunging and snapping to make herself feel safe. We are so thrilled to share that she is making tremendous strides in being able to remain safe, confident, in close proximity to people passing by, having a conversation within a close distant like you see here. People are unpredictable, there actions surrounding dog varies from ignoring to attempting to pet well before asking if they ask at all! Some interactions are like this! (Thank you whoever you are at Lowes!) It is important that we desensitize our dogs and improve upon the ability to safely work not just on obedience commands like sit,down and walking nicely on a leash. True training is working through and finding lasting proactive solutions to set your dog up for success with commands as an added bonus or foundation from which we can build.

This is the kind of interaction I wish happened more often. This person who remained in her car with her window down politely asked if she could be a guinea pig so I could walk Chiquita around her for some training, and I knew at this point in training we were not quite ready for that. So I kindly declined and in doing so advocated for Chiquita's success. It was toward the end of a pretty lengthy session and I wanted to end on a good note to trainers and owners, please advocate for your dogs success! Yes, training also involves acting like fools! Chaquita aka "Cheeks" opening up and starting to really have some fun during our sessions. Besides the fun stuff we are seeing tremendous progress in the few obedience commands and routines which include come when called and sit.
