Baby opossums are like preemies
Like all baby marsupials, baby opossums are called joeys, and those pouches that marsupials are so well-known for are a key part of the joeys' development. Female opossums are only pregnant for 13 days before giving birth to babies that are as small as honeybees.
Immediately after birth, the joeys will crawl into their mother's pouch, where they continue to develop. Because of their small size, not all joeys will survive. While litters can be as large as 20, the average surviving litter size is about eight.

Opie Acres is an opossum advocacy and learning page for the public to enjoy.
We do not claim to be anything but an educational tool for anyone interested in learning about North America’s only marsupial. 🙂
We do not take donations of any kind, and only share fun and interesting facts about our sweet opie friends ”opossums “!!! I started my opossum rehabilitation journey in 2012 and have had the pleasure of helping and saving many since.

Virginia opossums have a long head and pointed snout, rounded naked ears, and a scaly, nearly hairless, prehensile tail that is about half of their total length. Their fore and hind feet have five toes, all with sharp claws except for the clawless, thumblike, opposable innermost toe on the hind feet.

The dental formula of an opossum is 5134/4134. No other mammal in North America has more than 6 upper incisors, but the Virginia opossum has 10. They have been around for an amazing 65 million years!🖤

Did you know that white opossums are at higher risk of death because they cannot camouflage themselves from predators? Leucistic animals have a partial loss of pigmentation, which makes it completely white or with only patches of color. The problem for many leucistic animals in the wild is that because they don't have their natural camouflage, they are easy to spot and easier to prey upon. Other than the color, the opossum is normal.
