Snippet of me and my blm mustang just having some fun. She's pretty cool. I let her pick her pace. I love the way she gets so locked on to me.

Firefly is here for basic ground work and manners. She arrived yesterday and we had our first session. She's only 2 years old and has a baby brain. We worked on our Wesson lesson, no biting, picking up feet, and respecting space. Today during our session we had a completely different horse! ☺One day I'll remember to set up the tripod πŸ₯΄ she's got a good brain in there and even though she's in a new place with new people she's willing and thinking things through now. Excited to keep seeing her progress!

What are your deal breakers or non negotiables about a horse?
When I ask people about what they desire in a horse they give me this laundry list like they're going to get married to it. Want em tall, dark, and handsome. They want him to have a healthy 401k, make 6 figures a year, be over 6'3", speak 7 languages. They want lots of color, flashy, no flaws, no quirks or bad habits, no spook. Stop! That doesn't exist, that is not a thing.
People always say. "Oh I love your horses, they're great. When or if you decide to sell..."
but guess what THEY HAVE QUIRKS. They have their "bad habits" and I am ok with them. They can be trained out but I am ok living with a little silliness and still and amazing horse that puts up with my shenanigans. And guess what, spooking is ok but does the horse have the ability to gather themselves, think it through, and trust me to help them through it. And that comes with TIME. TRAINING TAKES TIME. And every horse has their day. Remember you are working with a living animal that has a brain not a machine.
If the horse is focused and has the heart and try, that horse can stay regardless of how goofy. The most important thing is do they have the drive, the willingness to learn and try. Color, height, papers don't matter, they are just a bonus. Think of a personality and a mentality you want first. The color and everything can be found with the mentality you want if you have the patience. But if you go by color and papers alone you might find a personality you don't match with and then you'll be right back in the same boat as before. This is just my opinion.

Hyperlapse with 2 unhandled mustangs. 4 days in. This was a 10 minute session of just letting them approach and sniff me. I don't reach or grab,I don't make them run around in circles, I just let them be with me. Yes there are other ways and quicker ways and everyone has their own way and every horse is different as well. This is just something I enjoy doing. The art of becoming touchable.

Say hello to Mimic. She is a 2yr old who's great grandpa is Hollywood Dunit. One of the horses I was absolutely in love with as a kid when I learned about him from his Breyer model. It's a honor to work with this filly

"For two decades, Hollywood Dun It touched people. Daily, they would come to Tioga, Texas from all over the world to visit him. Part of his appeal was that he won and placed at the most prestigious reining competitions in the world and part of it was his genetic prominence. Part was his personality. He was a β€œpeople” horse that loved to play to a crowd. During his competitive years, his charisma resulted in winning performances and later, a bow for a carrot still captured hearts. Part of it was that unforgettable face, the kind eye and sculpted head that he carbon-copied on to his foals. But to fully understand why so many people loved him, you have to know that he is a horse that made them believe! His magic made careers and fortunes."

Theres a method to my my madness as to why I like grooming my horses without having them tied and eventually saddled and everything without being tied. Patience is important, do not walk away from me unless I ask you to, do not move your feet unless I ask you to. If the horse moves I simply move them back, even if it's just one step. Of course they do learn to stand tied as well but I should not always have depend on tying my horse in order for them to patiently wait for me. Shelby is a pro at this, relaxed but listening. And no, it's not something everyone believes in or likes to do, just my preference.

Shelby did some training today. She was ok with the pad and saddle, had a little bronc fit at the beginning got a little too close to the panel and caught the stirrup just right and tore the stirrup leather. Thats when she got a little over flighty and stopped thinking. But no biggie, talked her back to a calmer state. I've also noticed the way she kicks out is like maybe she was hobbled or someone tried to tie up her back feet in the past and she has some ptsd with those legs. We got through it and ended on a good note. I've learned horses usually digress a bit in their training and then *boom* it all clicks. We just take our time. She still didn't want to leave my side when she was thinking it all through.

Shelby started some training today. No panel jumping, no craziness. My problem with her is she likes being near me πŸ˜‚ hence the close up face pictures of her following me around lol she does go out and go around when I ask her to. She likes positive reinforcement.

Shelby is a little upset with the snow and mud because the round pen was starting to dry out and I told her we'd get to try some new stuff and my way of going about working with her and building a better partnership, but she gets to be a mudstang and get some brushing done which she quite enjoys.

She says "I like your energy, and I want to trust but I'm still a little unsure. "
Just taking our time and letting her come to her decision. Step by step. Day #2 and she's already coming up, I haven't asked to touch her yet, I know she's not ready.
Btw this girl has a very long registered name and I don't like calling her by any of it πŸ˜‚ so any nickname/ barn name suggestions are welcome.

Pretty dirl πŸ˜πŸ’™ here to make a different opinion about people. She's quite cautious but curious.

Put Shelby in the round pen for a bit to see if she wanted to run around and be spunky or anything but I got this instead πŸ’™

Welcoming Shelby to S.A.D Horsemanship. She's a mustang from Evanescent Mustang Rescue and my first horse for the 2021 training season. No time limit for her, I will let her blossom and learn at her pace.
