After debate was limited to just five hours on HB24-1292, Colorado Democrat's "Assault Weapons Ban" bill ultimately passed second reading with just five the fifteen proposed amendments being approved.

Now, the bill is on the House Floor's calendar for a third (and final) reading as early as TODAY!

There are a total of 12 bills being considered today for a third reading, with HB24-1292 being by far the most controversial.

Please take advantage of the opportunity below to email your representative in the Colorado House and tell them you strongly oppose this bill.

Data overwhelmingly demonstrates that bans such as this one have virtually no impact whatsoever on crime rates.

In more positive news, HB24-1310 which that would have ended Colorado's FASTER program and disarmed trained school staff and private security was killed by its own bill sponsors in committee this week.

Together, we need to show overwhelming opposition to this bill now as well as any additional hearings and votes it may be up for, all the way to the Governor's desk if we have to.

This bill’s broad definition of “assault weapon” bans all semi-automatic rifles including America’s most popular rifle, the AR-15. It also bans with countless other rifles, pistols, and shotguns that Coloradans use regularly for hunting, target shooting, and self-defense.

The bill also bans common parts and accessories in the definition of “assault weapon”. A person in violation of this unconstitutional ban will be charged with a petty offense.

Radical, anti-gun legislators in Colorado claim this is an way to stop mass shootings, yet many studies have shown bans of semi-automatic rifles demonstrate there are no noticeable effects on violent crime or homicide rates.

The Bill's Path Forward

We believe HB24-1292 is likely to pass the House this week, as there are more radicalized members of the Legislature in that Chamber.

When the bill passes over to the Senate, we expect a better opportunity to drastically alter the bill or kill it altogether.

This is because more members of the State Senate are looking ahead to the November elections and are aware their districts aren't an easy win for them.

Putting additional pressure on them now only reminds them of that fact even more.

So keep up the pressure!
