Amazing news! We got Margaux’s Embark health testing back today and here are the results:
Walida U Źròdła
DM N/N (Clear)
MDR1 +/+ (Clear)
CEA N/N (Clear)
ALT +/- (Carrier)
Embark COI: 30%
A lot of people will see the above and have no idea what that means and why I tested my dog for these genetic disorders. Here is some additional information:
White Swiss Shepherds, like all breeds, are prone to breed specific genetic diseases. The OFA has health testing guidelines for each dog breed in order to maintain information on the health issues prevalent in specific breeds. OFA CHIC certification is essential in analyzing the strengths and weaknesses for health in a dog’s pedigree. Health testing is not the only method for determining whether your dog should be bred. There are also conformation titles, sporting titles, temperament testing, COI, and pedigree evaluations.
For White Swiss Shepherds, the OFA CHIC guidelines requires that I test Margaux for the following:
Hip Dysplasia
Elbow Dysplasia
ACVO Eye Exam
Autoimmune Thyroiditis
Multiple Drug Sensitivity (MDR1)
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)
Dentition (optional)
Health testing that I will acquire outside of the CHIC guidelines will include but not be limited to based on upcoming data:
Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH)
Pituitary Dwarfism (PD)
In Margaux’s Embark health testing results, it says that she has one copy of the ALT gene, or Alanine Aminotransferase Activty. This means that I cannot pair her with a male that also has this mutation. ALT is often used as an indicator of liver health, which means Margaux can potentially have a lower average resting ALT activity. I will be discussing with her vet about additional health testing based on this information and will post the findings as soon as I get them. Transparency is something I value in my future breeding program.
If you would like more information about the specific genetic mutations, my breed, my program, or anything else, please reach out!
