Thank you for all the love about Gunner, it's hard to believe it's been a week. The house is so quiet without him, but not boring. "Little" Rocco had TPLO surgery on Wednesday (people ACL surgery) and we are now in the long recovery process. It will be awhile before he is able to swim in the lake so I have to find some new, low impact activities for us!

Gunner 7/1/2012 - 5/17/2024
Our Gunner lost his battle with Prostate Cancer on Friday. He fought like a champ for over a year when we accidentally found the tumor. After finding a strange shadow on his prostate when looking for a reason why he was vomiting (totally unrelated), he was diagnosed through a BRAF test and ultrasound. We immediately began chemo which he continued for 8 months until it stopped working. During that time, Gunner maintained his normal happy, labby self despite the belly band he had to wear and the muscle loss in his legs. He swam, played with Rocco, chewed his bones, loved his walks, swam in lake michigan and hung out with the "friends" we brought over. He was a favorite in the oncology department.
Gunner passed peacefully at home and on Friday he told John and I, in no uncertain terms, that it was time. He lived his best life and fought as hard as he could but he was ready to go over the Rainbow Bridge and be reunited with all those that came before him; Abby, Ike, Bree, Nero and Maddie.
We are heartbroken but know that he is no longer in pain and is running free.

* Bringing this post out of the vault, because it’s so important * 👇🏻

I think it’s common to think that when our dog is unruly, there is something wrong with them. 

Especially when we look around us and see perfectly behaved pups strolling happily down the street with their owners. 

But the truth is…

Everything your dog does is NORMAL. 

Chewing…

Digging…

Barking…

Pulling on the lead…

Lunging at other dogs or joggers…

Growling…

It’s all NORMAL. 

This is  a normal response for a predator (because that’s what dogs once were) that got plucked out of their natural environment and dropped onto your sofa. 

What’s not normal? 

Walking on a leash at a mind numbingly slow pace as you stare at your phone…

NOT chewing things, or mouthing you…

Holding a sit stay or a down stay as you chat to a friend…

NOT losing their mind around another dog. 

Sure selective breeding has curbed some of the more natural responses our dogs have…

But the truth is…

Your dog’s behavior is a NORMAL response to them trying to adapt to an environment that truthfully is NOT normal for them. 

So tell me…

What does that shift for you? 

Because your dog isn’t “Bad”. There’s nothing wrong with them. Everything they are doing is completely normal.

Gunner Update: We had to make the decision to stop chemo this past Thursday. Gunner was diagnosed June 1st via a braf test and we started Vinblastine (chemo) on 6/31, the day before his 11th birthday. He has been such a trooper through this whole journey but I can tell he's getting tired. The most recent ultrasound showed that the tumor has grown and is growing into the bladder. I knew things were getting worse. I could try another IV chemo or oral, but I need to do what's best for him. We are at 8 months and I am so grateful for the time we have with him. We will continue doing his favorite things like long walks, swimming and playing with Rocco and the other dogs he can tolerate. Might even sneak in another agility lesson for him! We'll stick with the piroxicam and gabapentin to keep him comfortable. Here are some pictures from our walk last week in uptown Park Ridge after his bath. We love our G, please send lots of positive thoughts 🙏❤️
