Everyone meet Miss Bubbles!! She’s 8 weeks of hunting golden retriever and she’s one little spitfire! She has so much drive already that she’s already learning sits and downs and working with a toy. This little lady is gonna be a blast to work as she grows and I’m so excited to see where she and I go!! Thank you to Hunters Goldstrike Kennel for such an amazing puppy!!!! . . . . . . . . #comradek9llc #goldenretriever #goldenretrieversofinstagram #huntingretriever #redgoldenretriever #dogtraining #dogtrainer #gundog #gundogtraining #gundogsofinstagram #gundogpuppy #coloradogoldens #goldensofcolorado
I had a blast working with Emberly and Holly(owner not pictured) working on learning the skills to do some dock diving. Emberly is going for the speed retrieve! She is very toy driven and already liked water so it was a breeze pairing the two together. While Legacy Ranch Australian Shepherds doesn’t have a spot deep enough for the dogs to swim they are learning to jump into the water, retrieve a toy and return! Next we will go to the pool and work with them on swimming and using ramps!
Puppies, especially young pups, have very limited vision and often times simple things that are new to them can make them nervous. This little guy wasn’t sure about the treat bag as it was shiny, crinkly and “weird” to him. With some patience and help of some food motivation he overcame his nervousness and went investigate! He quickly realized it was just more food!! Patience is the biggest factor when working with young pups as they process what they are seeing (or not seeing in some cases). Thank you to Legacy Ranch Australian Shepherds for letting me work with this little one! If you’re looking for a great Aussie pup go check them out!
I got to work with an adorable 12 week old golden retriever named Maizie. Sometimes focus and understanding tasks can be very difficult for some pups. We were working on downs. But mazie was struggling with focus of any kind which is not unexpected for such a young pup. In this instance I used a neutral dog (a dog that won’t get upset with the pup) to help the pup understand what I’m asking. Dogs can learn by watching!! And boy did maizie love it! She progressed so fast. we kept the session super short but im so happy with how fast she picked up not only downs but sit from down!!
Puppy socialization and environmental enrichment is a vital piece of training for young dogs to be confident adults. Mr. Copper got introduced to an area he’s never been to with tall grass, a wheel and an unknown dog to him (jazzy) that will give soft but appropriate corrections if the puppies behavior gets out of hand.
Puppies need to experience new places, people, sounds and things when very young. Roughly between 8-16 weeks of age and continued as the pup grows. This 8-16 week age is a critical development period for puppies! This is also the time many people get scared to take the pups anywhere due to vaccination protocols.
It’s very important to carefully expose your pup to places and people that won’t overly scare him/her, where there’s is less dog traffic (or hold the pup in in high dog traffic areas) to mitigate the risk of exposure to disease or injury and allow him/her to explore and experience their areas in a safe manner.
Young pups this age have a very short attention span so make sure sessions are short and sweet!!
If you’d like help with your pup or adult dog don’t hesitate to reach out!!
Don’t ever let anyone tell you an old dog can’t learn new tricks! This is Jazzy a 5 year old Australian Shepherd learning how to weave in-between legs on command, and (not shown) spins, center and right commands. A dog can learn new skills at any age it just may take a bit longer then it would a puppy depending on the dog! If you’re interested in teaching your puppy something new reach out and set up a lesson!
I had so much fun working with golden retriever puppies today!!! They have such cute personalities. This is Miss Maizy learning to walk on a leash. She’s a star pupil.
