Learning should be fun! It’s starts early, and should continue forever.

06/08/2024

The heat wave we had last week was the perfect time to introduce the puppies to the pool. Good breeders know the importance of early socialization, and adding something new every few days for the puppies to explore, and grow confidence.

06/05/2024

Laverne (green collar) is so far the most confident; Shirley (pink) is probably a tad more playful, Felix (blue) is almost as playful as Shirley, although she beats him slightly in confidence, and Oscar (Red)? Well… he likes to play, especially if it’s LAYING DOWN! fat lazy lab!

This is “Dog” … cool photo huh? Looks scary but he’s a sweetheart!

The puppies are 4&1/2 weeks now!

They moved into the “Big Puppy Playpen” now, and play is the name of the game! They are having so much fun actually playing with their siblings now, so adorable! They have been started on solids, though Mama is with them most the day.
We’ve out colored ribbons on them to better tell them apart; which they scratch at often to get off… but they will be used to them by next week.
I’ve given nicknames to them; after two of my favorite TV shows as a kid (granted, in the early 70’s there weren’t many tv shows to choose from! ) “the Odd Couple” and “Laverne and Shirly” (okay… so this is a rest of your AGE… do you remener those shows? )

Boys:
Oscar: Red collar; so far the largest of the litter
Felix: Blue collar; so far the smallest of the litter

Girls:
Laverne: Green collar; slightly larger girl
Shirly: Pink collar; slightly smaller

RATTLESNAKES !!! It's SNAKE season!

HELP protect your dog in these ways:
1. Don't take them on a hike in the hills/ brushy areas abouve 75 degrees
2. Get a rattlesnake vaccine booster
3. Put Guard Masks on your dog when out in the brush/ hills
(these bags are designed to protect your dog's vital parts from Foxtail sticker, however, a secondary benefit is that it makes it much harder for a snake to bite your dog's face! Here is the link:

4. Take your dog through rattlesnake aversion training at the beginning of snake season. Best if done a few years in a row, then again every couple of years as a reminder. I do them with Dead Rattle snakes when I can get ahold of them....but it's better to go to trainer that uses LIVE snakes!
5. Keep Bendryll in your hiking bag; if your dog does get bit, google the dosing for your dog and give immediately. Call your vet right away to let them know you are on your way. Keep your dog calm and quiet, moving as little as possible until you reach your Vet.

The OutFox Field Guard is a patented, vinyl-coated mesh mask designed to protect your dogs eyes, ears, nose, and mouth from foxtails and grass seeds. Once comfortably placed on your dog, the Field Guard protects against foxtails and costly vet bills.

Love these Foxtail Guard Masks! This is the FOXTAIL season! These stickers can be deadly! Save your money from huge Vet bills, and possibly your dog's life and order one today! Here is the link:

Some important things to Know: If foxtails get in your dogs eyes or ears they can burrow all the way to the brain! My little Molly ingested one and it burrowed through her body, creating infectious abscesses and almost killed her. Only a HUGE surgury at Creekside Vetrinary saved her!

AND...I do believe they will HELP protect your dog's against rattlesnake bites at the most deadly spot: Their nose! This bag is loose fitting, and may keep a snake strike from getting to your dog's skin.

Yes, it does take a handful of times to get your dogs used to them. Yes, they can still drink and play ball.
No, I don't leave them on all the time, just when going out on hikes in the hillsides, and only from the beginning of the dry season (when foxtails first start sticking in my socks) until the beginning of August (in Parkfield: the season may last longer in cooler, wetter climates)

If you need help getting your dog used to them, call me for a private lesson and I can teach you how.
