It's been a year of firsts for our red foot tortoises. We hatched 8 babies that survived an incubator fail dropping the temperature to 5 degrees Celsius. Today I dug up a nest and one of the eggs was already caved in on one side. The inner membrane was intact so I cleaned it up and put a medical adhesive tape over the damaged shell. We will see what happens.

Never give up on eggs. Two clutches of redfoots were placed in my incubator on 11/14 and 11/15. Ten days later, the incubator failed, the chiller came on, and the eggs were cooled to 5 degrees Celsius. The eggs were moved to my emergency styro incubator with little hope. Both clutches are hatching today.

This is our 2020 sunkissed diffused female. She laid 16 perfect eggs last summer but space has become tight as we are gravitating towards cave dwellers and arboreal rat snakes. She is available.

I have finally begun working on my 8 display cages. The corns seem to be enjoying the climb and elevated niches. I am on the fence about bioactive bottoms but I will definitely add plants.

MY NEW NESTBOX PROTOCOL: Our Sunkist diffused girl was expected to lay while we were out of town and I wanted to try something different in her nestbox. The bottom layer of her nestbox was peat with all excess water squeezed out. I put the normal layer of orchid moss on top of the peat. After a few days of her rooting in and out of her nexbox and through the medium, the peat and orchid moss were completely mixed and I liked the texture. It had nice airspace but never dried out bc peat holds moisture well. We came home last night and this morning I found her and her perfectly plump eggs completely covered in the mix. The nest very much reminded me of finding a clutch of eggs in a rotted out log filled with broken down damp cellulose in nature.
