The horse behind the character Spirit in the movie is a real, living equine who is now 29 years old.
DreamWorks chose the young c**t Spirit when he was just a foal. Born to a stallion and mare captured by the BLM in Oregon, Spirit epitomizes the Kiger mustang breed with his striking appearance—wide-set eyes and a thick, wavy, multi-colored mane and tail—which inspired the animated version of the horse that continues to captivate audiences today.
In real life, Spirit mirrors his animated counterpart’s mission by advocating for the preservation of wild horses and their natural habitats. Residing at a sanctuary, Spirit not only enjoys human interaction but also serves as a key ambassador for wild horses, inspiring young people worldwide to learn about America's mustangs and the importance of freedom and protection for all horses.
He resides at the Return to Freedom sanctuary in Santa Barbara County, where he roams 300 acres of pristine California pasture. Though he was raised around people from a young age, those familiar with him note his spirited personality, reminiscent of his animated alter ego. Spirit plays a crucial role in the sanctuary, educating the public about his breed and promoting the protection of America’s wild horses.
As a celebrated figure, Spirit draws many visitors to the sanctuary. Through these interactions, he helps convey the critical message about the current state of the nation’s wild horses and how people can contribute to their preservation.
At 29 years old, Spirit enjoys his time at the sanctuary, socializing with other horses and receiving care from his devoted human companions. Although born in captivity, he embodies the free-spirited essence of the wild west. Thanks to "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron," his legacy will continue to inspire a commitment to the fight for freedom.

Did you know 2nd Chance Ranch & Rescue has a Red Tail Boa named Miss Pickles? We caught her here sunning herself last weekend when we got a bit of sun break through the clouds. Fun Facts about Red Tail Boas: They are moderately sized snakes ranging from 3 to 14 feet and weighing usually up to 33 pounds and also they are ambush hunters; they will squeeze their prey, killing it by shutting down blood supply to vital organs, and swallow it whole. Yikes! I will leave the feedings to somebody else on this one - lol!

Jake is such a beauty! Very protective of the wife (Jill ♥ ) but a friendly guy none the less! Did you know that Turkeys are known to exhibit over 20 distinct vocalisations. Including a distinctive gobble, produced by males, which can be heard a mile away. Individual turkeys have unique voices. This is how turkeys recognize each other.

We have gotten quite the troop of Ducks at the Ranch! Did you know that the word duck means to "to bend down low as if to get under something, or dive ". Ducks are named after the verb “duck” because they duck under the water to feed. Who knew???

Once our Sulcatta tortoises see you have food, they will more than likely follow you around their pen! Most fruits are good for Sulcatta's to eat, but there are some that aren’t good for tortoises due to the high amount of phosphorus or citric acid that they contain. Citric acid irritates the stomach of a tortoise, and phosphorus blocks the absorption of calcium, which is essential for a healthy bone structure and shell. On the "NO" list are Avacado, Banana, Coconut, Kiwi, Cantalope, Peach, Orange, Lemon, Lime & grapefruit.

Larry & Lenny always trying to get their grapes! Lemurs are vegetarian and usually feed on plant foods such as leaves, seedpods, nectarines, seeds, and fruits. During the summer season, when food is abundant, lemurs eat a variety of fruits, leaves, flowers, and insects. They are particularly fond of sweet and juicy fruits like mangoes, figs, blueberrys, grapes and papayas !

We extended our smaller Turtle pen so our little guys have more place to roam and explore. Turtles are naturally shy creatures that like to stay hidden away from view. In the wild, turtles will spend most of their time hiding in burrows, under rocks, or in other dark, hidden places so we will create various options for them to hide from predators, and find cool spots in the summer heat. (by way of plants, shelters, etc.)

About 10 people contributed their time and all went smoothly except for the screams that we heard when that darn rat jumped out at us and the mammoth spider with a 5" leg span made himself known!

Dont let the cute face fool ya! This cutie is always waiting on the post when volunteers arrive on Saturday mornings. He definately wants to be pet but he will meowwwww until you give him a can of wet cat food, so of course, we oblige! He is one of our favorite cats at the Ranch and has such a great personality! He is a barn cat and does not go in the Catio with the other cats. He sleeps on the big refrigerator and is always begging for scratches 😻
