We are a little late but wanted to share some helpful travel tips anyway! From our friends at the ASPCA!

Did you know that January 2 is National Pet Travel Safety Day? In honor of the holiday, we asked our experts at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) to provide some safety tips for our friends taking the scenic route with their furry companions! After all, who doesn’t love a good road trip? Here’s what the experts had to say.

Do: Prep your pet for a long road trip. Get your pet geared up by taking them on a series of short drives first, then gradually lengthening the time spent in the car.

Don’t: Forget your pet’s rabies vaccination records. While this is generally not a problem, some states require this proof at certain interstate crossings.

Do: Keep your pet in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. The crate should be large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. Secure your pet’s crate so it won’t slide or shift in the event of an abrupt stop.

Don’t: Let your pet ride with their head out the window. If you decide to forgo the crate, never allow your pet to put their head out the window, and always keep then in the backseat in a harness attached to the seat buckle.

Do: Prep a pet-friendly travel kit. Bring food, a bowl, leash, waste bags, grooming supplies, medication, a first-aid kit and any travel documents your pet may need for the duration of both your ride and your time away from home. Also pack a favorite toy or pillow to give your pet a sense of familiarity.

Don’t: Feed your pet in a moving vehicle. This may result in your pet getting sick. Instead, feed your pet three or four hours ahead of departure.

Do: Pack plenty of water. Always opt for bottled water on a road trip. Drinking water from an area they aren’t used to could result in stomach discomfort.

Don’t: Leave your animal alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, even with the windows open, a parked vehicle can become a furnace in no time, and heatstroke can develop which may result in death. In cold weather, a car can act as a refrigerator, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.

Be sure to follow these steps to ensure you and your pet have a fun and safe journey to your next destination!

Lets talk appointments and exam room etiquette!

🔵Appointments
🐾 If you are going to be late please call the office as soon as you know you will be. Depending upon how late or when your appointment is in the day we may have to ask you to reschedule.
🐾 While your other pets are welcome for moral support of your pet being seen by the doctor, we ask that you do not bring an additional pet TO BE SEEN by the doctor or technician if they are not on the schedule. If you are coming in with one pet and another needs to be seen please call to see if we can add them to the schedule- please do no assume that we will be able to.
🐾 Please plan ahead- we are booking out between 7-10 days for appointments and surgeries are about 2-3 weeks out.
🐾 If your pet is coming for their annual vaccines or any lab work please bring a stool sample with you. Your pet will thank you! 💩
🐾 If your pet is coming for an appointment that will require a urine sample (urinary tract infection, increase in urination) please bring a sample with you. The fresher the better. Ideally a sample taken right before you get in the car. If it will be older- NO older then 2 hours and it must be refrigerated prior to heading to the office. If you do not feel like you are able to get a urine sample please DO NOT allow your pet to urinate 2 hours prior to the visit and we can catch it at the office. Feel free to call from the car when you arrive and we can come out and catch it if needed.
🐾 If you pet is coming in for diarrhea please try to bring a sample if possible. Again the fresher the better. These samples are a little harder to get, we understand.
🐾 When it doubt if you need to bring a urine sample or a f***l sample to your pets appointment- we would rather throw out extra samples then not be able to get one! ☺️
🐾 If you are going to be a new client to the office please arrive 10 minutes early to fill out paper work. Please also bring you pets medical records with you if you did not provide them ahead of time.
🐾If you are an established client and you pet goes to any other office for care please bring those updated records if they have not been provided ahead of time.
🐾 If your pet is coming for a follow up from a local emergency clinic or specialists office please bring your records with you. Some ER's and specialists office take some time to get records to us and we will need those when your pet comes for their follow up.

🔵 Exam Room
🐾 If your pet has an accident please let us know so we can clean it up properly. Especially if its on the rug- we will want to clean the area with our spot cleaner.
🐾 While we understand that phone calls do happen while you are here and things come up. But we ask that when your technician or doctor is ready to start your appointment that you are phone free so that you will be able to answer any questions or discuss any concerns that you may have for your pet.
🐾 While we are fine if you stand by the table during your pets exam please allow your technician to restrain your furry friend. We do not want them to think you are the bad guy when they get a poke or something happens they do not like.
🐾 Do not hesitate to ask questions if you have them! Take notes for what is discussed if you like.

If you have any questions about anything in this post please let us know. Thank you for your understanding!

Let’s talk prescription, medication or food requests!

🐾 We do not call in prescriptions to pharmacies. If your pet has had the medication filled at the pharmacy (online or in store) before you can ask them to send us a faxed request for additional refills, if they are allowed the request will be signed and sent back.
🐾 Please allow UP TO 24 hours for a prescription, medication or food request to be filled. If you are placing an order for a special medication or food, not one that we typically carry, please allow 7-10 days for the medication or food to arrive. Staff will notify you if what you are requesting is special order.
🐾 Special orders- items that we DO NOT typically carry, food or medications, will require payment before ordering. If you continue to order said item then pre payment will not be required after the 2nd order.
🐾 Please be sure to give yourself enough to time for refills. We do not want your pet running out of medications or food. We recommend when your pets gets to about 1-2 weeks of medication to call for refill. For food, 1/2 to 1/4 bag of food depending on how much your pet eats! Food takes 7-10 days to get in if we do not have your pets food in stock. We try to be good about keeping food in stock but sometimes we get a run on a particular food because everyone runs low at the same time and this is hard to predict.
🐾 If you are ordering your pets meds or food online they do not require a written prescription so we will not write one. Those websites you order online and they send us a request.
🐾 If your pet is on a medication, typically a controlled medication, these will require a written prescription with each refill. This is a pharmacy regulation. Please allow 24 hours after requesting for these prescriptions to be written and signed by the doctor and ready for pick up.
🐾 Please DO NOT use our texting service to request food, medication or prescription refills.
🐾 Did you know that we have an online pharmacy that ships directly to your home! Comparable to those other big online pharmacies. If having medications or food shipped to your house is easier for you and you would like to continue to support our office please check out https://fureverfriendsvet.vetsfirstchoice.com/ . If you use our online pharmacy the requests come directly to us and we can make recommendations directly to you so they will be right in your inbox after your appointment. No more getting home and going "shoot what did Dr. Aimee say the name of that food or medication was?!"

Let's talk reception etiquette!

🐾Please be patient- our receptionist's work as quickly as possible. But sometimes a phone rings or they are waiting for your pets chart to come up before they can check you out.
🐾 If you have a snack at the front desk- we usually have candy up there!- please toss your trash in the garbage located between the front doors.
🐾 Always be respectful of not only our staff but our other clients waiting to be helped.
🐾 If you are all checked out and waiting for something to be brought up to you- medications, estimate etc. please have a seat and your technician or assistant will bring it out to you. We don't want to crowd the reception area in case someone else is in need of assistance.

As always we thank you for your understanding! If you have any questions about anything please let us know!

01/08/2025

Let's talk waiting room etiquette!

🐾 If your pet is coming in for any type of cough (dogs), upper respiratory infection (cats) or any other illness that may be contagious we ask that you wait with your pet in the car until we can get you directly into an exam room- please call or come in WITHOUT your pet when you arrive. Please DO NOT walk around the grounds (before or after your appointment) if your pet is potentially contagious.
🐾 If your pet is not animal friendly please let reception know- we may ask that you wait outside or es**rt you right into a room so that we can avoid any confrontations with other pets.
🐾 Do not allow your pet to interact with other pets in the room unless you have talked to the other owner. Not every pet is friendly and not every owner may want their pet to interact with other pets.
🐾 If there is a cat carrier on the floor with a feline friend in it, please DO NOT allow your dog to interact with the carrier. Not all feline friends appreciate a dog in their space.
🐾 We would prefer that retractable leashes not be used to bring your pet in. If that is the leash style you choose to use please keep the leash locked to a short length.
🐾 If your pet has an accident in the waiting room or exam room please let us know IMMEDIATELY so that we can clean the area properly. Don't be embarrassed- your pet isn't the first and won't be the last to have an accident. 💩
🐾 Please clean up after yourself. Dispose of any trash into the garbage can located between the front doors.
🐾 If your pet is not friendly with strangers or becomes anxious and fearful at the vet please let all staff know BEFORE they approach your pet so that we can take proper safety precautions for everyone- muzzle, less staff, slower movements etc.
🐾 Every pet needs to be on a leash or in a carrier. If you do not have either of these items please let reception know!
🐾 If you yourself are sick please let staff know! If it is something that can wait we would prefer that you reschedule! But if your pet is ill and needs to be seen we understand. We ask that you let staff know before you come in so that we can take the proper precautions- this includes possibly asking you to wait in the car while we bring your pet inside, entering with a mask etc. We are a small office and have to take proper precautions to keep ourselves safe so we can continue to care for the pets that need us. 🐶🐱

We thank you for your understanding! If you have any questions about anything please let us know!

Let’s talk texting etiquette!

If you did not know our office offers a texting option. You can text us at our main office number 727 288 4900.

But this option is only for a few specific topics:
🐾 for us to send reminders for appointments or surgeries.
🐾 for clients to confirm appointments or surgeries.
🐾 for clients to send pictures when requested by the office staff.
🐾 for us to notify clients of office closures or change of hours.

Our texting option should NOT be used for the following. These topics require a phone call because these items may require a longer conversation.
❌ scheduling an appointment or surgery.
❌ rescheduling an appointment or surgery.
❌ anything that may require urgent attention either medical or for a request of food or medication.
❌ food or medication requests- we need to verify that lab work and exams are current.

While we do offer this service it is not monitored constantly during the day and we do not want your pet to have any issues because a message was not seen in a timely manner when it needed to be. We check the messages periodically through out the day.

Again anything urgent or emergent you should ALWAYS call the office!

01/08/2025

Since it is the beginning of a new year we will be sharing our veterinary office etiquette series of posts again as a reminder of our rules and protocols at the office on several different subjects.

Check back a couple times a day to review all the information.

Thank you!
