Siberian Husky Red is our shop representative for this week’s working breed. Huskies are beautiful dogs, definitely one of a kind. They have boundless energy and therefore need lots of exercise physically and mentally. They’re not a breed for everyone, a true working dog. For Groomers they can be challenging and of course they shed seemingly endlessly.

Siberian Husky, a thickly coated, compact sled dog of medium size and great endurance, was developed to work in packs, pulling light loads at moderate speeds over vast frozen expanses. Sibes are friendly, fastidious, and dignified. The graceful, medium-sized Siberian Husky's almond-shaped eyes can be either brown or blue'and sometimes one of each'and convey a keen but amiable and even mischievous expression. Quick and nimble-footed, Siberians are known for their powerful but seemingly effortless gait. Tipping the scales at no more than 60 pounds, they are noticeably smaller and lighter than their burly cousin, the Alaskan Malamute. As born pack dogs, they enjoy family life and get on well with other dogs. The Sibe's innate friendliness render them indifferent watchdogs. These are energetic dogs who can't resist chasing small animals, so secure running room is a must. An attractive feature of the breed: Sibes are naturally clean, with little doggy odor.

Meet Yorkshire Terrier puppy Dixie for this Transfurmation Tuesday. This was her first haircut and believe me it was a hard won Transfurmation 😁. It took both Amber and I, patience and perseverance did the trick.

Meet our last contestant for dog of the month. Russell Terrier Hottie is contender #3. She is a fun dog at the shop, always ready for action 😜.

👋 Hottie was re-homed on April 21, 2023 after having completed her show dog career. She is now the CEO and Cruise Director of her new home. While Hottie is a strict taskmaster; she has two devoted employees whom she pays with kisses and snuggles.

Today meet the Samoyed. Our meet the breed model is Patrick, who has been coming to the shop since he has been a puppy. All Sammies need regular grooming since they shed a lot.

The Samoyed is a substantial but graceful dog standing anywhere from 19 to a bit over 23 inches at the shoulder. Powerful, tireless, with a thick all-white coat impervious to cold, Sammies are perfectly beautiful but highly functional. Even their most delightful feature, a perpetual smile, has a practical function: The upturned corners of the mouth keep Sammies from drooling, preventing icicles from forming on the face. A Sammy sentenced to solitary confinement in the yard is a miserable and destructive creature. These are smart, social, mischievous dogs who demand love and attention. Sammies need structure in training. Teach them what's expected of them early, and practice it with them often.

Samoyeds, the smiling sled dogs, were bred for hard work in the world's coldest locales. In the Siberian town of Oymyakon, for instance, temperatures of minus-60 degrees are common. The Sammy's famous white coat is thick enough to protect against such brutal conditions. Powerful, agile, tireless, impervious to cold, Sammies are drop-dead gorgeous but highly functional. Even their most delightful feature, a perpetual smile, has a practical function: The mouth's upturned corners keep Sammies from drooling, preventing icicles from forming on the face.

Our second contestant for the month is another Buddy. Buddy P. has been coming to the salon for most of his life. He is always a happy go lucky dog who loves everyone. Buddy is a Maltese who wandered into my yard and my heart in 2012. Someone threw this beautiful soul away. My best guess is that he's an "old" man of about 13. He's been the best nurse when you don't feel well. He's a happy guy who's sure that everyone he meets and everywhere he goes is there just to love and worship him, and he's not wrong. He's going blind and is also deaf now but still loves to snuggle. Don't know how much longer this angel will be around, but he'll be loved until then and beyond.

Our Giant Schnauzer representative is Flare, you met her last month for the dog of the month competition.
Numerous breeds were used in the development of the Giant Schnauzer including the black Great Dane, the Bouvier des Flandres, and the German Pinscher. Originally bred to assist on farms by driving livestock to market and guarding the farmer's property, the breed eventually moved into the city, where it worked guarding breweries, butchers' shops, stockyards and factories. It was unknown outside of Bavaria until it became popular as a military dog during World War I and World War II. The Giant Schnauzer is a larger and more powerful version of the Standard Schnauzer, and he should, as the breed standard says, "be a bold and valiant figure of a dog." Great intelligence and loyalty make him a stellar worker and companion.

A well-bred Giant Schnauzer closely resembles the Standard Schnauzer, only bigger. As their name suggests, Giants are imposing. A male might stand as high as 27.5 inches at the shoulder and weigh 95 pounds. The muscular, substantial body is, as the breed's fanciers put it, a "bold and valiant figure of a dog." The double coat is either solid black or "pepper and salt." Familiar characteristics of the Mini, Standard, and Giant are a harsh beard and eyebrows, accentuating a keen, sagacious expression.

Meet your first August contestant for dog of the month. This is Buddy, he is a regular at the salon and comes once a month. This is what his parents have to say:
Buddy is our COVID dog. We rescued him from a cage in a garage, at nine months. He's now almost four -- half shih tzu, half miniature poodle. He chases squirrels, barks if someone's at the door, and sleeps curled up against us all night long.
We have adjusted our days to include feeding and walking him, as well as ample lap time. He is always nearby.
On the rare occasions when he is not at home with us, as when being groomed, the house is quiet and seems almost empty.
He brings joy to all visitors, especially our two year old grandson. And he brings us great joy as well -- all day long, every day.
He is a delight.

First working breed we get to meet is the Portuguese Water Dog. Our salon’s model is Gertie. She is groomed in a Retriever Clip, meaning one length all over.

This fun loving, low shedding breed was made well known by the Obamas, who owned two of them.

Here is what AKC has to say: The bright and biddable Portuguese Water Dog was bred to be an all-around fisherman's helper. The robust, medium-sized body is covered by a coat of tight, low-shedding curls. PWDs are eager and athletic companions built for water work.

The Portuguese Water Dog is super-smart and very 'biddable', meaning he's easy to train and eager to please. The PWD can be groomed in two styles: The retriever clip (the entire coat is clipped to one inch in length, with the tail tip at full length) or the more check-me-out lion clip, where the coat is on the hindquarters and muzzle is clipped down to the skin.

Let’s start the new month off with a new Meet the Breed Group. Introducing the Working Group. There are currently 31 breeds included in this group.
Quick to learn, dogs of the Working Group are intelligent, strong, watchful, and alert. Bred to assist man, they excel at jobs such as guarding property, pulling sleds and performing water rescues. Doberman Pinschers, Siberian Huskies and Great Danes are part of this Group, to name just a few. They make wonderful companions but because they are large, and naturally protective, prospective owners need to know how to properly train and socialize a dog. Some breeds in the Working Group may not be for the first-time dog owner.

Last contender for dog of the month July. Meet Giant Schnauzer Flare.

Flare is a gentle giant who is incredibly sweet and also tough when it comes to guarding her family. She saved her mini dachshund sister from a red fox and is always ensuring we’re safe from every delivery person that steps foot on our property. She loves to play with her best friend from next door, play fetch the ball with her human brothers, run with her mom, cuddle with her dad and give us all unconditional love and pure joy.

To celebrate this beautiful summer day, the dogs and I went for a walk at one of my favorite places Patuxent Wildlife Refuge. Georgie’s first walking adventure and of course she had to get used to having her pictures taken on awkward structures 😝.
