Trey Miller talks about the importance of bracing and setting legs to help be prepared for showmanship. Muscle memory through repetition is an essential part of training your show lamb projects in the first month of ownership. Once your sheep is broke to tie with a chain halter, practice accurately setting the lamb’s legs and bracing. The same goes when rinsing legs - always make sure to stop and reset legs if one is out of place. This constant repetition is essential to long-term showmanship success!

Let's talk BACKSHAPE!

What does it mean? Why do we need it? How do we get it?

When a judge refers to backshape, or a "big back" or a "crease" or "definition" they're really referring to muscle definition and volume of muscle over the animal's spine, aka: The Loin.

Muscle is vital in market animals, and one way to evaluate it on foot, is to make a visual assessment of that animal. The more muscle shape and expression that animal has, the more likely it is to go to the rail with a larger loin eye area. Yes, these are market animals, with real world implications to the food chain, so having muscle is critical to make the complete package we're trying to assemble.

There are multiple ways to achieve more muscle, but starting with an animal that genetically is more likely to have it is always a good start. From there we can help build muscle with protein and specifically in pigs, with the amino acid Lysine. Sunglo offers multiple feeds with high protein and high lysine such as 18-G and 803 to help achieve more muscle.
