Speaking of updates! We have some coming to the page.

We took some time off for the holidays, and then proceeded to get quite sick. We seem to finally be over the worst of it. (after a month of being sick 😭🥴)

And we’ve been working quietly in the background even while we were down! Can’t wait to share all of these things with you all!

Just a quick pop in to let everyone know, one-half of our founders is currently laid up, fairly sick. It’s not Covid, thank goodness, but they’re pretty sick nonetheless. We’ll be back to things once they’re up and running!

We also haven’t been posting much because (other than the holidays) it came to our attention that our logo has an image that is copyrighted. We were unaware of this, as we paid an outside person to create it, but plan to rectify it asap.” And we didn’t want to post too much using a copyrighted image.

We have received 𝓦𝓸𝓷𝓭𝓮𝓻𝓯𝓾𝓵 news! Our mice are negative for the bacteria that causes rat bite fever!

And a beautiful brindle dominant hairless mama gave birth to 11 tiny beans! She’s lactating well, and the litter was culled to 6 and is doing amazing!

(This litter was joined by 4 more, 3 splash litters and an angora litter. And our roans are ready to pop!)

This beautiful girl came out of what we thought were recessive yellow mice, who carried roan/Merle. The line popped out some brindle, so she’s definitely undermarked brindle, but we’re in love with her regardless.

Can’t wait to work on some more Merle Brindle pieds!

(another sibling was blue, which is why we settled on them being silver and not dove tan. Definitely too light for dove)

𝑨𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒓𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈-

Today we cross our fingers and request good vibes. Our second set of oral swab for the sᴛʀᴇᴘᴛᴏʙᴀᴄᴄɪʟᴜs ᴍᴏɴɪʟɪғᴏʀᴍɪs goes out today.

The positive rats have been humanely euthanized, one of the hardest decisions I have made. But we have children, and children are one of the demographics that are hit the hardest. 4 of our rats, our heart rats, will live out their natural lives with a sister breeder who was also positive and held her heart rats back with plans to do a natural depop (allow the rats to live out their natural lives while following strict hygiene procedures and never adopted out).

However we did have a smaller second group who had just come in recently and had been in quarantine. They had no contact or shared space with the positive rats, so we’re hopeful that perhaps they’ll be negative. Since it was only 7 adults (1 female has a litter of very young babies, so they weren’t swabbed, but mom was) and the test can include swabs from 10 rats, we were able to test 100% of them. It will likely be early next week before we get the results.

I’d hoped to get the samples out yesterday, but had a medical procedure pop up that required sedation and bed rest immediately after. I’m still most confined to the bed today, but feeling better. So the results went out this morning, in the hands of the male counterpart (my husband William) to me (Jess).

Send us all the good vibes and hopes. We sure need them. Have a photo of one of my heart rats, my marble female, Quartz, for photo tax.

𝑨𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈-

So there is some new information that has been discovered regarding sᴛʀᴇᴘᴛᴏʙᴀᴄᴄɪʟᴜs ᴍᴏɴɪʟɪғᴏʀᴍɪs, the bacteria that causes ʀᴀᴛ ʙɪᴛᴇ ғᴇᴠᴇʀ.

I, and many other mouse breeders, were under the impression that mice infected with this bacteria died, that they couldn’t carry it and seem healthy like rats can. However, we have learned different. Mice can contract the bacteria and seem perfectly fine. So our mice will be tested for this bacteria as well.

Unfortunately the type of testing required for this bacteria is not cheap, so I’m having to space out the testing a little. Please bear with us as we get through all of this! We have no reason to think our mice are carrying it, the rats and mice never had any contact, their cages aren’t even cleaned on the same day, and I don’t handle one type after the other without hand washing and sanitizing between.

But your health, as well as our family’s, comes first. All of our results will be public on this page and in the breeding community’s testing group.

As long as they’re negative, all pet and show lines will go through the suggest breeding hiatus to burn out the one thing we did test positive for, though it isn’t contractable by other species, humans included, and doesn’t cause issues in a breeding or pet setting.

The feeder lines will be handled slightly differently, I’ll be counting out and pulling the number of males and female from the litters as they wean, and they’ll go into separate sexed grow out bins for their hiatus. The adults of the feeder lines will continue breeding during that time, with zero contact or shared space with the ones on a breeding hiatus, until the hiatus is over, then all breeding will switch over to those that have gone through the burnout period.

Once both sides have done their hiatus, we’ll repeat the serology test for MHV.

I come to you today with some news, both good and bad.

𝓖𝓸𝓸𝓭 𝓝𝓮𝔀𝓼- We’ve received our mouse test results and they are nearly perfect. There’s one thing they were positive for, but upon speaking with the lab, it is something completely inconsequential in the breeding game. Luckily it’s also only in my feeder breeder side of things. So mouse breeding is about to pick back up full swing.

𝙱𝚊𝚍 𝙽𝚎𝚠𝚜- Our rat testing came back as well. Our rats were positive for Streptobacillus moniliformis, the bacteria that causes rat bite fever. Thus our entire rat population will have to be culled. I am very lucky to have some wonderful friends who breed rats that happen to be negative for this bacteria, so once our stock is culled and everything is sanitized and swapped out for clean cages/racks, we’ll be back up and running on the rat side of things. Luckily I’d not adopted out any rats, so no one but myself was affected by this diagnosis.

In the comments I’ll be leaving some information on rat bite fever, as well as a link to a couple of groups, one for breeders, one for pet owners, that will help get you through the testing processes, if you should choose to do so.

I’m attaching our results to this post. The first image has two columns, RS001 is our rat sample, MS001 is our mouse sample. The second image is the positive result for the rat bite fever bacteria.

I’m going to take some time to mourn the loss of my babies, my rats. But expect some photos to start coming out of the mice, and soon we’ll resume adopting. Thank you all for your understanding at this time.

Due to the recent outbreaks of SDAV (among other things) in other parts of the country, and because we received animals from other states via transport, we are currently not able to adopt out any pet animals. Our testing supplies from Charles River Labs are on the way, and our rats and mice will be tested for, among other things, SDAV, Sendai, and Hanta.

Once our tests come back, if they’re clean, we’ll resume business as usual. If not, we will take whatever steps necessary to ensure that any problems are taken care of. Whether that is a breeding moratorium, hard culling, whatever. The health of our animals is the top priority.

If everything comes back clean or is easily fixable? Oh boy when we come back? We’ve got some beautiful babies who will need new homes!
