Our little BB is a definite heart stealer. She’s the sweetest little baby. Approximately 4 months old and full of sass, she will make a wonderful family pet. We think she’s a Rottie or a Dobie mix.

This season of rescue feels like a never ending climb up a mountain, pushing a boulder…. in the middle of a hurricane.

There is a very real CRISIS across this country but most especially here in the SOUTH, where people do not spay and neuter their animals.

Adoptions are DOWN. Shelters and Rescues are completely FULL. We turn down requests to surrender dogs 3-4 times a week….every single week. We are STRUGGLING to feed the 100+ dogs in our care. The food banks aren’t receiving enough dog food to supply all of the shelters and rescues in their networks. We go through 200 POUNDS of dog food every single day here.

Meet Dolly! ❤️

She’s so full of sass, it’s a bit ridiculous. She gives great “side eye” and enjoys binge watching One Tree Hill episodes in her spare time. She also likes to be carried around like a princess.
In a word: Diva.

Seriously Folks, she’s an amazing little girl. We think she’s some sort Lhasa Apso mix or possibly Yorkie mix. She’s very sweet and ready for a home. She is good with other dogs, cats unknown and no small children. She’s approximately 2-3 years old.

Say hello to Kate and Pippa.

They are 6 month old, female chocolate Labrador Retrievers. Just like Abbott and Costello, they too were headed towards a terrible fate at a puppy mill….so we saved them too. They are very sweet and will make wonderful companions/ family dogs. They have no experience with potty training, leash walking or obedience commands. They will need adopters who understand this and are willing to put in the time and effort to teach them.

Meet Abbott and Costello

They are black Labradoodles, both males, and they are 6 months old. We discussed in an earlier post about what happens to “older” puppies at puppy mills. These 2 boys were headed towards a terrible ending, so now they are safe with us and looking for homes. They have never lived inside a house. They have never had a family. They do not know how to walk on a leash or know any obedience commands. They are like little lumps of clay just ready to be molded into perfect dogs. They need adopters with previous dog experience. A strong vet reference is an adoption requirement. These boys will be large adult dogs weighing approximately 65-75 lbs.

To our GARD FAMILY:

On July 15th, 2021, our director lost her husband unexpectedly and we lost GARD’s backbone. Phil was the driving force behind all of the day to day maintenance for our shelter. His loss has been felt every day since. From kennel repairs, fencing issues, computer problems, building maintenance, and groundskeeping….Phil did it all.

We’ve tried so hard to keep this shelter up but this property is massive. The shelter itself is about 15 acres with multiple buildings and kennels. We are one of the largest facilities in this area and at any given time, we are always running at capacity. Then there is another 35 acres of forest land to contend with. A daunting task for 1 woman and a few kennel workers. If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to see it, does it make a noise? We aren’t sure. But what we do know is that when that tree falls, someone has to be able to cut it up and move the pieces. Maintaining a property this large has gotten to be too much for us.

We have endured 3 years of hard physical labor, a recession, a global pandemic, dog food shortages, dwindling adoptions, a tornado, too many owner surrender requests, and so many homeless animals in need. We’ve given everything we have and still come up short. The monthly expenses to operate this shelter are staggering. We receive no federal or state funding. We have no help from our local animal control agency, even when dogs are abandoned in our driveway.

At this time we’ve made the necessary decision to put this property up for sale. With the Hyundai manufacturing plant being constructed less than 10 miles from our shelter, our property value has increased. Our director is purposefully seeking and reviewing offers.

So what does this mean for GARD? We are actively seeking help trying to place about 50 dogs with other rescue groups. Transports to northern rescues is something we can also consider. We have so many wonderful dogs that just need a chance. We will also be looking for a smaller piece of property, a little further out, and not in Bryan County. GARD IS NOT CLOSING. We just need something a little more manageable and we need to downsize the number of dogs we are able to care for.

We’ve always been tremendously grateful for our GARD family. There is no way we could have saved so many animals over the last 15 years without the help of our supporters. We hope you continue to support us with this new chapter we are beginning. We understand there will be questions and concerns. We just hope that you will all put yourselves in our shoes and know that this wasn’t an easy or quick decision.

Pictured below are 3 of our Heeler babies that are part of a litter of 7. Their irresponsible owner put them out at 4 weeks old. Their mother was killed. They are safe now with us and will be ready for homes in about 5-6 weeks. There are 4 girls and 3 boys in this litter.

We’ve got 3 sweet babies looking for homes. They are “leftovers” from a puppy mill. Meaning they sold all the siblings and these babies were still hanging around ….while new litters were about to be born. The outcomes for older puppies at places like this are not good…..so we try and step in every single time we can to save babies like these 3 from terrible fates.

Magic is a Husky.
Moe is a Schnauzer.
Mitch is a Rat Terrier.

THE EYES HAVE IT!

Google came from a breeder and is totally blind. He is 4 months old and is very sweet. He just wants love and attention.

Uno has an ulcered eye and may have to have it removed if the antibiotics don't work soon.

Please say a prayer for these little guys and if you can, a donation towards their care would be greatly appreciated. Both of these puppies want a forever home as soon as they're medically cleared to be adopted but we are struggling with huge vet bills and could use your help to get them ready for homes.

Happy Tail Time!

Dozer has been a volunteer favorite since he was owner surrendered at 9 months old. He gave us a major scare when he was neutered and we all discovered he was allergic to Cerenia the hard way…which resulted in life threatening seizures. Super thankful for our amazing vet and his care team that treated him around the clock for several days. We were worried we might lose him.

We firmly believe that special dogs require special adopters and we knew Dozer would be a special case due to his health issues. When our extra special volunteer Kailee lost her sweet pittie Blu a few months ago….we had a feeling that Dozer would tug at Kailee’s heartstrings. It’s been a few weeks now and Dozer is happily settled in. He goes to work with Kailee every day and is amassing quite the collection of bandannas and stuffed animals.

We know he’s in the very best hands and will have the most amazing adventures with Kailee.

Happy Tail Time!

Update on Daisy Duke!

We knew she’d need special adopters. As a former puppy mill breeder dog, her limited interactions with people made her fearful of most humans. She was with us for 665 days before we found her perfect match this February.

She’s doing amazing and we all celebrate her successes, no matter how small ….like when she felt safe enough to jump on the sofa and take a nap. She’s thriving in her forever home and loving her pack mates.

Update on Mara! After spending 588 days with us, Mara was adopted in early April by previous GARD adopters. She is doing amazing and is currently in training working on her obedience skills.

This is the overwhelmingly frustrating side of rescue.

Sometime in the middle of the night these TWO mothers and their combined TWENTY TWO PUPPIES were DUMPED at the end of our driveway. Discarded like trash for someone else (US) to deal with.

Irresponsible owners are some of the worst people. Just spay and neuter your dogs. We are completely full and have zero space or resources to care for 24 additional animals. If any other rescue groups can take these little families….PLEASE reach out. We are totally full and can not keep them.

Should also be noted it is illegal to dump animals….even at a rescue. We have security cameras on our property for this reason.

👉We need help. Urgent, immediate help. These mothers and their babies didn’t deserve to be thrown out like garbage. Please SHARE this post and help us network to get them placed with another rescue group that has space available. Babies look to be 3-4 weeks old.

GARD FAM:

We wanted to provide an update on BLUE, the coonhound that was hit and left on the side of the highway last week.

His leg has been surgically repaired. Vet had to pin it back together. His surgical expenses are $650. We have raised $430. He will also require vet checks every two weeks to make sure the leg is healing correctly….so we will have expenses for these visits too. He is also severely underweight.

We need help.

Emergency Need:

We are calling him Blue. He was found on the side of I-16 with a broken back leg. He is severely underweight. We have rushed him to one of our wonderful vets, Swainsboro Animal Hospital. He will require surgery to repair the break and he will need time to recover from this malnutrition. Estimated surgical expenses are $600-$800. We could not (& would not) leave him on the side of the highway….but we need help covering this unexpected medical emergency.
