Megan looked like a full-blooded black Lab, but then she was a bit of a scamp. Her mom was a top-dollar field trial, registered Lab; her dad was a good-looking, but sneaky Golden Retriever. The embarrassing litter was quietly given away. Megan came to live with me the summer before I started vet school in Auburn. Two weeks later, my dad died unexpectedly of a heart attack. Megan stayed close, listened, and let me cry. She was wise even at a young age; somehow, she made that time better. After graduation, I got my first job as a vet in Orange Beach, Alabama. Then Megan and I moved to Pensacola and I married Angus. When our son Yuri was born, I was worried Megan might be jealous so I sent Yuri's shirt home from the hospital. Megan carried it in her mouth, waiting for me and her new charge to come home. She was the perfect nanny. When our daughter Kylie was born, Megan added her to the list of humans she was responsible for. Fifteen and a half years later, Megan began to show and feel her age. With pain in her back and rear legs, it was hard for her to get up to greet me. I couldn't keep her comfortable and I didn't want her to suffer. One day, Megan told me it was time, and I knew I needed to take care of this--personally and with respect. I gently euthanized my friend--it was the kindest gift I could give her, after all she shared with me. Megan's Landing is named in memory of my friend, my protector, and my constant companion, and in honor of other four-legged friends who give us so much.
