Chelsea the Service Dog in Training

Chelsea the Service Dog in Training My name is Chelsea and I am currently in training to become a service dog! Follow me to see me grow from a puppy into an official service dog.

My name is Chelsea. My foster mom found me online at a rescue group called Midwest Animal Rescue Services (MARS). I was originally with an owner who could not care for me or my 5 other siblings. We were sent to a humane society before being transferred to MARS. My littermates and I came in with skin infections and ringworm. Luckily we were all treated and became eligible for adoption. My foster mo

m found the new rescue group for the organization she works for called Paws Giving Independence (PGI). PGI likes to rescue dogs from shelters and give them a second chance at life through their service dog training program! My temperament was a great fit for the program so my foster mom picked me and even one of my sisters to begin training! My sister is currently in the prison training program and will be trained by an inmate for the next year and then come back to PGI to finalize training. I used my cute face that I hear everyone talk about to make my foster mom fall in love with me. Since I will be training about two years with her before going to a person with a disability, she decided to adopt one of my brothers that was still left! Now we get to have playdates! Currently my foster mom is finishing up her final year of undergrad at the University of Illinois in Urbana, Champaign. I go with her to class, on the bus, to the store, to restaurants, and any other place she drags me to! I don't mind though because I get to meet lots of interesting people and explore so many fun places!!

Tonight for training class we went to the Dunlap Fire Department! I visited with some firefighters and checked them out as they put on all their gear. It is important for service dogs to be comfortable around the loud sounds and intimidating uniforms so we can remain calm for our future handlers if an emergency occurs. Thanks for allowing us to practice tonight Dunlap!

Spent my day out shopping for Halloween/fall decorations and even did a stop at the doctors office! I clearly don't share my foster moms crazy enthusiasm for Halloween shopping😂

I hope all my Illini friends have been transitioning well to another semester at UIUC. Make the most of your time on such a beautiful campus! I am back home with my handler, but am still very grateful for all the love and support I got from my professors and fellow students while I was at UIUC. I hope you all enjoy your weekends as we kick it off with . Also a big shoutout to my former roomie as she started her journey to becoming a veterinarian this week! Will you be my future vet??

While I'm in training, I love to help be an ambassador for PGI. Usually I should be ignored while in public so it's fun to help do promotional events where I get tons of love all day. Today I worked with my handler at to help showcase some cool new door handles River City Labs has been working on for us! A few more of my friends are still at the event if you want to go check them out before 5pm at the Peoria Civic Center!

Have you ever seen a service dog in a restaurant? If not, you may have been in a restaurant at one point and not even noticed! I like to rest quietly under the table while my handler eats, so sometimes I surprise people when we get up to leave. Under the ADA service dogs can accompany their handler into public places, like restaurants. Luckily as time goes on service dog education is increasing so I have not had a problem entering a food establishment. Today I practiced at an indoor restaurant and a drive in style outdoor restaurant! Both places had very friendly staff members who helped welcome me. Thank you to all the amazing businesses who have helped me gain restaurant skills during my training process!

Yesterday I visited a hospital environment for the first time. I opened all the doors for my handler and was even able to get some of those pesky elevator buttons too! The machines didn't bother me and I loved visiting with the sweet nurses. I'm hoping my friend that I came to see has a good surgery today. See you in recovery Chad!!

Today is Pet Adoption day!! I was first placed into a humane society in Missouri before being transferred to Midwest Animal Rescue Service. I came to MARS with skin infections and ringworm and they treated me and got me all ready for a new home! Luckily for me Paws Giving Independence decided to rescue me (and my sister) to enter their training program to become a service dog! The majority of PGI's dogs come from shelters, so let me tell you from experience that shelter dogs are absolutely incredible dogs!

Today I went to tons of stores to practice. Toys r us was full of little kids so it was great "leave it" practice! Then the pet store was great practice with dog distractions. I also worked with an electric wheelchair for the first time and handled it like a pro! While I was out I picked out a toy for my brother too so he didn't feel left out of my long day, I think he likes it😎

As part of my training my handler tries to take me to a variety of different places. Today I went to the gym. I did a quick walk through to check out the machines and then sat next to my foster mom as she worked on the machines! During the training process we do not know exactly who my recipient will be yet, so it is important to get use to a large variety of possible future ventures!
