It’s time to stop training our beagles! 🚫✋

Do we train children to be good babies, toddlers, teenagers, or adults?

Nope! 👎

❣️ We guide them.

❣️ We show them.

❣️ And we teach them lessons about boundaries, social etiquette, and attachment.

Most importantly, we learn that their personalities influence their likes 😊 and dislikes 😠

We recognise their limitations and help them adjust.

What works for one child doesn’t necessarily work for another.

🐺 Beagles are the closest breed to a wolf pack, but without the hierarchy and dominant pair.

Both packs guide, show, and teach the young how to live within their society or pack.

📺 I watched a beautiful video of an adult male beagle and a 10-week-old female puppy.

🥸 The male beagle was the perfect teacher.

He found a soft area of ground, gently scraped at it, and sniffed.

🐶 The puppy watched and mimicked exactly, learning to turn over the earth to activate and enhance a scent.

🐕 Beagles teach through showing, ignoring, and disciplining in their unique way.

And there’s a reason hunters will sell off some of their pups or the unscrupulous ones dump them at the roadside.

They know these pups will never be a good fit for the pack or efficient hunters, no matter how much time and effort they put in to teach them.

🤔 If hunters can recognise personality and genetic traits…

…we as pet parents should do the same and work with our beagles accordingly.

😱 I’ve had four beagles, each with very different personalities and genetics, that influenced how they learned.

And when I work with clients to help their beagles learn, I work with them for a minimum of two months 💪🏻

Because I always have to adapt the approach based on the client’s feedback…

…and using my experience of working exclusively with beagles for five years. ☺️

There is no such thing as:

“train hard enough and you’ll eradicate a behaviour.”

If that were true, we’d all be giving up bad behaviours left and right and centre!

But we don’t, because it’s hard to change behaviour in dogs and in ourselves.

🥸 It’s time to move away from hardcore obedience training and learn what our beagles need.

🥰 My Daisy needs a good sniffy walk every day and a comfy bed to nap in.

🤪 Pepper loves to chase a ball and wants to nap wherever I am.

🥰 No matter how much I try, Daisy will always guard bark if she sees something out the window.

🤪 Pepper has learned not to bark out of windows or in the garden.

All our beagles have some limitations.

And trying to make them into something they can never achieve will only frustrate you and your beagle.
