UNDERSTANDING WHAT IS DRIVE WHAT IS INSTINCT AND WHAT IT MEANS WHEN SOMEONE SAYS THAT THE DOG IS "CIVIL".

Some people are mixing term "Civil" with term "Defense". The 101 fact is that "Civil" is a characteristic of the dog's training and personality and it is NOT and INHERITED drive. Where prey and defense ARE INHERITED drives. The "civil" is descriptive characteristic which shows in prey drive or in defense drive.
So what does term CIVIL really means":
The term "Civil" is all about targeting> The so called "Civil dog" targets the man without any benefit or presence of any bite equipment or any other equipment (like stick) on the decoy or near by (on the ground) of the decoy. Civil dog does not have any undesirable associations as well. Period. Imagine in military you have uniform. Dog training decoy's uniform is the bite like sleeve or suit. If the soldier is in civil then he has no uniform> Thus civil dog is biting people in "civil" clothing and not because they do have on a bite equipment/"uniform". If the dog has to see decoy in "uniform"/bite equipment or even if the equipment is near by on the ground, in order to bite then he is not civil. That is my test #2.
The EQUIPMENT in civil dog training is ONLY used to protect the decoy from getting injured AFTER the dog is trained to be bite and is engaging/biting the civil decoy. There are other aspects and conditions which render the dog to be or not to be civil. Such is an called association and there are three different types of associations.
* Undesirable association is any association dog has to have in order to perform bitework. Undesirable association in a dog renders dog not to be civil.
**The only desirable association for civil dog is a command to attack (or training to bite in area protection). If the dog is unencumbered by anything and targets a man after he hears the command to do so then such dog is civil.
*** then we also have supportive association. Supportive association is an association which is not necessary but it is helpful when present because it increases he dg's intensity to perform his civil work.
Example: Is when the LE dog hears over radio a K9 call and gets into serious drive.. Such dog does not need such supportive association to perform apprehension,... but due to anticipation it helps to increase his intensity if he does. Civil dog's bitework is not necessitated by undesirable association.
FYI DRIVE: A drive is helping animal to satisfy basic biological needs and compensates for for example hunger with drive to obtain food, or safety by drive of self protection or procreation by sexual drive and it is an instinctual need that has the power of driving the behavior of an individual; or it is said that it is an "excitatory state produced by a homeostatic disturbance". Homeostatic disturbance can be hunger in Prey drive and self-defenses in Defense drive. There are other dives like pack drive, sexual drive and so on. Some include in drives what other call instincts. But instincts are only and automatic automaton like behavioral pattern like nesting - instinctual building of nest, or ants building an anthill and bees honey comb, and so on. Instinctual reflexes are often subsection of drives. Like prey drive incudes chasing reflex instinct to automatically attack a moving animal or any moving object, retrieve instincts to bring the prey object back to den, pack member or pups,...and so on.
There are 2 "civil" characteristic . One is natural - like dog just opportunistically biting a person's flash (because that is all is there) and the other one is learned /trained targeting of a person and not an equipment.
let make on thing clear. When we are talking about civil ability of the dog in training or during dogs bitework in work of protection like in LE or PP, then we are talking about a learned behavior or also natural behavior supported by our training. But "civil" ability is no drive per se, nor instinct per se, nor reflex per se, because drives and instincts are strictly inherited and can not be changed or established by training, where "civil" can be and is learned behavior and it can be changed or unlearned. Inherited drive, inherited instinct or inherited reflex can not be learned or unlearned they are inherited. They can be only developed and enhanced by training. The dog can be civil naturally like an untrained dog will coincidently and opportunistically bite flesh naturally but that is based on opportunity and it is not driven to be civil naturally through genetics so it too is not a drive per se.
In dog training the term "Civil" merely describes preferential targeting of the dog a "civil" person = person which does not have any bite equipment and it can be and it is part of prey or defense. So yes the dog can be civil in prey drive or in defense drive as an learned characteristic of these drives.

FAKE TRAINING.

Question:
What are your thoughts on "double decoy" drills? I've seen the drill used in police work to assist with outing, having been explained that the out is rewarded with another bite, the second decoy, and then back and forth to "reinforce" the out.

My Answer: Reward bite is used in sport where we give the dog a toy - in this case a sleeve as a reward for proper performance. Such training targets equipment and not a man ant thus it is detrimental to training of a "civil" dog.
Where (multiple) decoys drill are useful for scenarios where the multiple attackers are present. Also reward bite is used in sport and there it is used in prey drive targeting a sleeve and not a man. My advice to you, is to stay true to the purpose of the exercise and NEVER do fake training where - like in your question - multiple attack is used to "out" the dog. Out is Out and redirection to other bad guy should be just that...a redirection to another bad guy. I call such training where the one purpose of the command is substituted by other purpose as "fake" because the purpose of the exercise does not match what is going on in the mind of the dog and what is required by the handler. This type of a training may lead to confusion in the dog's mind and the dog is then not clear about what is going on - is not "clearheaded" by design of the training system. Example: The dog trained to Out! by using redirection to different bad guy then may make the dog to bite your partner or innocent bystander BECAUSE the dogcomanded to Out! and trained in a fake way, is then expecting bite and not coming to heel or to front.
So my advice is not to "Fake Train" your dog but always make sure that your training is honest with simple clear purpose communicated to the dog.

Many impressively trained dogs have a fake training and which will fail to act correctly in real situation. Please learn to understand how to tell real train...

How to TRAIN CIVIL PROTECTION AND LAW ENFORCEMENT DOG
Initial training with totally "green dog". ? Let me start with saying that I am training dogs for 56 years and have trained successfully hundreds of Personal protection and Law enforcement dogs all over the world. I have learned the principles in my home in Czech republic from some of the best trainers of police dogs. I am posting this here not to be ridiculed but to tell you how I am doing it. Take it or leave it. Train the way you wish. This is how I do it.
I start (The first session) with baseline of the friendly dog ( The first lover and only then "killer so to speak) - and I always do so on command by challenging him (or her) in defense with 100% civil decoy so that the dog understands that the person in front of him is an enemy and targeting is ALWAYS on the man and NEVER on THE EQUIPMENT. The prey is a relief and reward - meaning decoy runs when the dog turns on and the dog follows the decoy in prey. I repeat this for about 5 -10 sessions each session with 1- 5 takes max. I strive for 1-2 takes (less is better)> I work the dog with different civil decoys (no bites at this time) in different locations in order to avoid undesirable association. In this first level I am only making sure that the dog targets the man and NVER the equipment ever. THAT is my main objective.
In The Next - 2nd level - the decoy wears equipment and may use stick on and off,...but the dog is not allowed biting into the equipment. The idea is to make sure that the dog does not see correlation between equipment and bitework but so that he sees the equipment as JUST ANOTHER clothing - same as jeans, T-shirt or even minimally clothed decoy(even naked condition permitting) this includes 3-5 sessions or so. Equipment on and off the decoy in order to make it to the dog irrelevant,... but no bite yet.
Up to this point our objective is to avoid creating any undesirable association between bitework and equipment, location, time of day,...decoy and even other people present is of paramount importance.
The third level -
Bite work is finally commenced. At this time it should be clear to the dog that he is TARGETING the man and not equipment. Equipment must be IRRELEVANT to the dog as an object of targeting through the dg entire training. I leave equipment targeting to sport training. THIS IS NOT SPORT THOUGH. Through all this process the dog must TARGET THE MAN(!!!) and NEVER THE EQUIPMENT. The equipment's function is merely to protect the decoy. The equipment must be IRRELEVANT throughout of all the training and for the entire time of the dogs life.
This is just a foundation.
The intensity of the dog and of his bite, is built and increased by teaching him to fight with various decoys and letting the dog win when the dog does well. Winning is facilitated by decoy running away 'scared" and dog is pursuing in prey drive and getting bite but in the end the decoy always gets away. THAT increases the intensity of the dog to fight and the strength of his bite, full muzzle bite and his general desire to win and not the decoy get away and win and to pursue and to bite more and more intensively. I do not teach the dog to target specific area on the body of the decoy. The dog must be able to bite anywhere and not just one area - like biceps or so. I also let the dog to choose push or pull bite based on his genetic memory and I let him apply different techniques with purpose to win. I DO NOT TEACH THE DOG TO BITE -(and fish to swim and birds to fly ) I am only teaching him how to fight using inherited techniques which are embedded in the dog's natural genetic makeup. I also teach the dog to ESCALATE his intensity when the decoy escalates his. - I teach and train the dog that this is the only way he can win and that is through choosing fight in higher and higher intensity and NEVER choosing a flight.
I always condition the dog in simple scenarios and only then apply this conditioning to various scenarios - this is important.
In the end every session ends up with defusing the dog on command and making him again friendly to all people present ,...even and especially, to the decoy. This system is available on tapes and free podcasts on my HTTP://WWW.AlpineK9real.com website.

The best way to condition your self is through repetition into performing automatic behavior> In this case when exiting a car EVERY time - rain or shine - with dog in the car or not you go and look if there is a dog or child in the car or not. You do this 100% of time. This behavior then becomes automatic and you will perform it even though you argue with your spouse on the phone ( Very likely time to forget to look. ) This si the same principal we use in dog training. As Frans Kafka said : "All knowledge, the totality of all questions and all answers is contained in the dog." -
