👉 Arthroscopic surgery is an excellent technique used by veterinarians to repair problems in a horse’s joints. In this post, we will discuss the benefits of arthroscopic surgery for Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD.)
🐴 OCD is a developmental bone disease of young horses in which cartilage fails to mature properly, causing a defect within the joint. The condition generally affects the stifle, hock and fetlock joints, but can affect many other joints.
❗ Not all horses with OCD lesions present as lame. Some lesions appear as bone fragments and should be removed surgically if the horse displays clinical signs.
If arthroscopic surgery is needed, what is the next step❓
Arthroscopic surgery allows a surgeon to access a joint through a keyhole approach and is performed with the horse under general anesthesia.
The surgery is performed by inserting a small arthroscope into an incision in the joint. The arthroscope has a high-definition camera allowing the joint to be inspected thoroughly.
For removal of a bone chip, an instrument is inserted through a second small incision to grasp and remove the chip. Next, the joint where the bone chip was removed is smoothed and cleaned.
📌 Generally, the horse would be confined to stall rest for the next 30 to 90 days before being turned out. Hand walking can begin as soon as 15 days after surgery, and exercise under saddle could begin as early as 45 days, depending on the joint involved and the degree of damage observed within the joint.

❓Have you ever heard of a disease called pulmonary fibrosis? This disease (equine multinodular pulmonary fibrosis or EMPF) can happen in the horse sporadically and a similar syndrome is seen in humans, dogs and mice. In horses, this disease affects the lungs, is associated with a Herpesvirus and can be difficult to diagnose. Thank goodness it’s a rare disease, as it generally doesn’t carry a favorable prognosis.

Why do veterinarians do a blocking exam when you bring your horse in for lameness? What does this mean?
Blocking is the generic term for diagnostic anesthesia. These procedures allow the veterinarian to localize the site of the problem and look further into the lameness more specifically. Once your veterinarian localizes which part of the body is the main source of lameness, the blocking exam can begin.
The veterinarian will start by feeling the limb for any heat, swelling or pain to flexion of the joints or deep palpation of soft tissues. Generally, a hoof tester exam will also be performed. The veterinarian will usually start at the bottom of the limb and work their way up, using anatomy to decide which nerves need to be blocked to anesthetize (take away feeling of) certain parts of the limb. After allowing the block to sit for a specified time period, the veterinarian will again assess the horse for lameness to see if it has changed, stayed the same, decreased or gone away completely. This will help localize the source of lameness. If the lameness has gone away, then this tells where the lameness is coming from and more diagnostic testing can be performed to specify what in that area is responsible for the pain.

Sweet itch develops when the affected horses and ponies, which are more commonly the worst sufferers, are sensitive to the irritants in midge saliva. Some horses may be more prone to developing sweet itch due to genetic factors, as there may be a hereditary component to the condition.
The symptoms of sweet itch can vary in severity from mild to severe and may include:
📍Intense itching
📍Hair loss
📍Skin inflammation
📍Sores and scabs
📍Behavioral Changes
📍Loss of condition
It's important to note that while the signs and symptoms of Sweet Itch are often characteristic, a proper diagnosis by a veterinarian is essential to rule out other skin conditions and develop an appropriate management plan for the affected horse. Early intervention and preventive measures can significantly improve the horse's quality of life and reduce the impact of Sweet Itch.
If your horses show symptoms of Sweet Itch, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆!

🐴🌞 Tips to Prevent Heat-Related Problems in Horses 🌡️💙
As summer temperatures rise, it's crucial to ensure the well-being of our beloved equine companions. At Cave Creek Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery, we prioritize equine health and want to share valuable tips to prevent heat-related problems in horses.
Preventing heat-related problems in horses is crucial, especially during hot and humid weather. Here are some valuable tips to keep your equine companion safe and comfortable:
1. Hydration is Key: Ensure your horse has constant access to clean, fresh water. Horses can lose significant amounts of fluid through sweating, so keeping them well-hydrated is essential to prevent heat-related issues.
2. Shade and Ventilation: Provide ample shade in the paddock or turnout area to allow your horse to escape the direct heat of the sun. Adequate ventilation in stables and barns is also crucial to promote airflow and reduce heat buildup.
3. Strategic Turnout Times: Consider turning out your horse during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening, to avoid the peak heat hours.
4. Regular Exercise Management: Adjust your horse's exercise routine during hot weather. Schedule workouts during cooler periods and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day.
5. Proper Grooming: Regularly groom your horse to remove excess sweat and dirt, as this allows their natural cooling mechanisms to work more efficiently.
6. Electrolyte Supplementation: If your horse engages in moderate to intense exercise and sweating, consult with a veterinarian about providing electrolyte supplements to help maintain electrolyte balance.
7. Monitor Vital Signs: Familiarize yourself with your horse's normal vital signs and monitor them regularly during hot weather. This way, you can detect any signs of heat stress or dehydration early on.
8. Consider Cooling Techniques: Employ cooling techniques, such as hosing down your horse with cool water or u

Discover helpful ways to keep horses cool and comfortable during scorching summer days. Let's ensure the well-being of our beloved horses. 🌿🌊 Here are some helpful ways to keep horses cool in hot humid weather:
1. Clean and cool water available at all times
Horses prefer fresh, cool water in sufficient amounts when it is hot and humid. Keeping clean and cool water in deep buckets in the shade will help keep water cool. In addition to the automatic waterers (if available) additional deep buckets may be required to allow horses to gulp water versus sip smaller amounts.
2. Provide appropriate feed for the horse’s activity
Feeding excess hay in hot humid weather can contribute to added body heat from the digestive process. Feeding smaller amounts more frequently or use of a slow feeding hay bag may be beneficial. Feed a quality balanced feed that is designed for the exercise requirements of the individual horse.
3. Consider individual fitness
Physical fitness and environments vary between individual horses. Research has shown horses well-conditioned and of optimal physical fitness tend to cope with hot humid weather more easily than those who are out of shape. Horses residing in climates with extreme heat and humidity tend to cope better than horses traveling and adjusting to different climates. Although the horses may cope better if they are acclimated to the heat and humidity, it is still important to observe safe exercise and offer healthy ways to help horses keep cool.
As responsible horse owners, it's essential to stay informed and take proactive measures to protect our horses from the heat. However, every horse is unique, and their needs may vary. That's why we encourage you to schedule an appointment with our experienced team today. Our experts will provide personalized guidance and advice tailored to your horse's specific requirements.
