April is National Heartworm Awareness Month. Heartworm is a dangerous, deadly disease that spreads easily from pet to pet with help from mosquitoes. We encourage you to schedule your pet’s annual heartworm screening and restart their heartworm preventative medication this month if you haven’t done so already.

They’re fluffy and playful, they yip and bark and are just all-around adorable, and all they want is to be loved. What could we be talking about? That’s right, puppies! National Puppy Day celebrates that most adorable of our four-footed friends, the baby canine, and it’s quite possibly the cutest day ever. It doesn’t matter the breed or gender, all puppies are the perfect solution to a terrible day.

They’ll cuddle and crawl and
well, occasionally p*e all over everything
but they’re puppies! When National Puppy Day comes around, you better be ready for a barking good time, there’s no way to avoid it when the day is about the ultimate ball of heart-melting fluff!

We often forget that there are dangers lurking around our own homes! Check your home for these poisons, and make sure they’re out of your pets’ reach.

Some pets will eat just about anything
including dirt. But fertilizer isn’t just dirt, and the chemicals in it can harm your pets.

The most common toxic plants are azaleas, lilies, daffodils, and tulips. Whenever you get a new plant, do some research to see if it could make your pet sick and keep it out of harm’s way if necessary.

It is surprisingly common for pets to be poisoned by ingesting mouse or rat poison. While it may make your rodent problem harder to manage, do not leave any poisons low enough for pets to reach.

Be careful not to spill any detergents during spring cleaning. Cats tend to have more serious reactions to these, and they’re usually exposed by walking through the substance and licking their paws later.

Pets may think pills are treats, and many human medications, from over-the-counter cold medicines to prescription SSRIs, are deathly toxic to animals.

We're not Kidney-ing Around About Kidney Disease

Did you know that kidney disease is the #1 cause of death in cats over 10? Or that nine out of every 1000 dogs examined suffer from kidney disease?

March is National Kidney Month and it’s important that pet owners be aware of the symptoms of renal disease. This is especially true if you have a senior pet, as older animals are more susceptible to kidney issues.

A visit to the vet is warranted if you notice your pet drinking more water and urinating more than usual. Weight loss, lethargy, vomiting/diarrhea and bad breath with an ammonia-like odor are also symptoms.

Symptoms of renal failure can come on gradually, but the condition is serious and the sooner it’s caught, the sooner you and your vet can take steps to slow the progression. Treatment often includes a diet with less protein and phosphorus, with an emphasis on high-quality protein sources.

If you have questions about kidney disease or your pet is showing any of the symptoms above, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 480-893-8423.
