Today is National Trivia Day! Here are some interesting facts about dogs that you may (or may not) know!

Here are some fascinating facts about dogs!

1. Dogs have unique nose prints – Just like human fingerprints, a dog’s nose print is unique and can be used to identify them.

2. They can smell emotions – Dogs can detect changes in human emotions through scent, such as stress, fear, or happiness, due to chemical changes in our bodies.

3. Their noses are incredibly sensitive – Dogs have up to 300 million scent receptors in their noses, compared to about 5-6 million in humans.

4. They understand time – Dogs can sense the passage of time. Studies suggest they react differently to owners returning home after varying periods, indicating an awareness of time.

5. Some dogs are amazing athletes – The fastest dog breed, the Greyhound, can run up to 45 miles per hour, making them the Ferraris of the canine world.

6. Dogs dream too – Like humans, dogs experience REM sleep and often twitch or move as they dream about their daily adventures.

7. They can detect diseases – Some dogs are trained to sniff out cancer, diabetes, and other medical conditions, showcasing their incredible scenting abilities.

8. The Basenji doesn’t bark – This African breed yodels instead of barking, earning it the nickname “barkless dog.”

9. Dogs sweat through their paws – Unlike humans, dogs don’t have sweat glands all over their bodies. They regulate heat by panting and sweating through their paw pads.

10. Chihuahuas are born with a soft spot – Like human babies, Chihuahuas are born with a molera, a soft spot on their skull that usually hardens as they grow.

11. They have three eyelids – Dogs have an upper lid, a lower lid, and a third lid called the nictitating membrane, which helps protect and moisten their eyes.

12. The oldest dog on record – A dog named Bobi, a Rafeiro do Alentejo from Portugal, was confirmed as the world’s oldest dog at over 31 years old in 2023.

13. They have a sixth sense – Many dog owners report that their pets can sense impending weather changes, earthquakes, or even emotional shifts in people around them.

14. Dalmatians are born spotless – Their iconic black spots develop as they grow.

15. Dogs can recognize over 250 words – Some highly trained dogs can understand a vocabulary comparable to that of a toddler!

Just made a batch of ginger cookies and of course gave each of my dogs one, which is fine at such a low qty. But it's not recommended for them because of the white flour (potential allergen), sugar (diabetes) and butter (high fat can induce pancreatitis), allspice (I was out of cloves) is toxic to dogs because it contains eugenol.

So, here is a pet safe version if you want to make some treats for your pets.

Dog-Friendly Ginger Treats
1 ½ cups whole wheat flour (or oat flour for grain-sensitive dogs)
½ cup unsweetened applesauce or pumpkin puree
2 tablespoons melted coconut oil or olive oil
1 tablespoon molasses
1 teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup water (add as needed for consistency)

Directions:
1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 325°F (165°C).
2. Mix Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine flour, ginger, and cinnamon. Add applesauce, molasses, and coconut oil. Slowly add water until the dough forms.
3. Roll and Cut: Roll out the dough to about ¼-inch thickness on a floured surface. Use cookie cutters to shape the treats.
4. Bake: Place treats on a lined baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and firm.
5. Cool Completely: Let the treats cool before giving them to your dog.

I'm cat sitting and honestly, I'm finding myself identifying with both cats way too much... One cat just knocked everything out of the pantry so she could go to sleep inside, and the other keeps getting stuck in closets. Both are a vibe... 🤣
