What a treat to see how well animals respond to at home veterinary care, and even better when the owners have a great experience too!

These pups are usually anxious at the vet clinic and did such a great job today for their annual exams in the comfort of their own home. They we so relaxed they even gave Dr. Nelson kisses after she was done doing all of the exams and shots 😍

Are you and your pets protected against leptospirosis? If your pet has never been vaccinated against leptospirosis, we highly recommend you get your dogs vaccinated against it because of the zoonotic risk for people and the prevalence of leptospirosis in our region.

Leptospirosis is a bacteria that is spread through the urine of wildlife (a squirrel in your yard, a mouse in your house) and causes liver and kidney failure in dogs. It is also spread from dogs to people so that is why it is so important to vaccinate!

The American Animal Hospital Association has updated the vaccinations guidelines to include leptospirosis as a core vaccine for all dogs, along with rabies and distemper/parvo/adenovirus vaccines.

🚨 Important Update: Leptospirosis Now a Core Vaccine for ALL Dogs
The 2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines have been updated to classify the leptospirosis vaccine as CORE for all dogs starting at 12 weeks of age – regardless of lifestyle, location, or breed.
Why the change?
🌆 ALL dogs are at risk—urban, suburban, and rural.
⚠️ Potentially fatal, even with treatment.
🔄 Zoonotic—it can spread from pets to humans.
🏢 Dogs in daycare and kennels also face exposure risks.

If you are looking for the perfect new addition to your family, check out TATER😍 Tater is a stray dog that was found a few weeks ago by an employee of Pet Palace Hotels here in Pike Road.

He is approximately a 9 month old beagle mix and has been examined, vaccinated and given heartworm prevention by Pike Road Mobile Veterinary Services. He is sweet as “tater pie” and is in great health! He is currently 20 pounds and probably won’t grow more than 30 lbs as a full grown adult.

Our kitty-cat patients (and our clients) have enjoyed the house call veterinary experience 😻 Although a home visit from the vet can still be a little nerve racking for some cats, these feline patients did great and were significantly less stressed.

Most cats were purring and demanding love after we completed everything and the ones who weren’t were able to sneak off to the comfort of their hiding spots😸

Little Miss “Pepa” was recently seen for her annual physical exam and given vaccines, heartworm prevention injection, and samples collected for her annual lab work.

She did fantastic for her visit and she was still wagging her tail and giving kisses after we were done with everything! What a cutie pie 😍

Sadie sure did appreciate how much easier her annual visit was this year at her own home! What a sweetie pie 😍

Sadie has been a long time patient of Dr. Nelson’s and was doing happy zoomies through the house when we arrived. She still loved us after we did her exam and shots😊 We love you Sadie, and your parents too! What a treat to have you as our very first house call appointment 🤩

Meet Dr. Marlaina Nelson! Dr. Nelson has been practicing veterinary medicine since 2013. She is a native of LaGrange, GA and has lived in the Montgomery area since 2019 with her husband and two children.

Her passion for house call veterinary care began as a veterinary technician for a mobile veterinarian in her home town, during her high school and college years. After graduating from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, she joined the US Army Veterinary Corps. She finished her active duty contract and transitioned to the US Army Reserve Veterinary Corps in order to plant some roots with her family and still serves to this day.

Dr. Nelson practiced as the associate veterinarian for Apalachicola Bay Animal Clinic in Florida from 2017 to 2019, then moved to Montgomery, AL. She began her career in Montgomery as the lead veterinarian for Goodwin Animal Hospital on Atlanta Highway, then moved to Taylor Crossing Animal Hospital as the lead veterinarian from 2021 to 2023.

Although Dr. Nelson loved her roles as lead veterinarian, working diligently in some of the best clinics in the Montgomery area, her heart longed for something more and something to call her own. After lots of deliberation and planning, her dream of opening her own house call veterinary practice has finally come to fruition.

Pike Road Mobile Veterinary Services allows her to practice high quality veterinary medicine through personalized relationships with clients and their pets in the Pike Road community. This new business adventure also allows Dr. Nelson to enhance the quality of life that she and her family deserve, and allows the Nelson family to immerse themselves in the community that we all love so dearly!

Our hours are 9-5 and we will soon be Monday through Friday. For the next few months while the business grows, Dr. Nelson will only be available for appointment 3 days a week (on the calendar on our appointment request website).
