Ever wondered what makes a calf roping saddle different from other roping saddles?👇
First thing you might notice, the cantle and swells on a calf roping saddle are designed to be lower and flatter than those on team roping or ranch roping saddles. Why? Because calf roping is about speed and precision, the lower cantle and flatter swells allow for a quick dismount.
Along with that, the saddle horn on a calf roping saddle is smaller and shorter. Unlike other roping events, in calf roping the rope is already tied on and there is no need to dally after you catch the calf. A sleek saddle horn ensures nothing gets in the way during the critical dismount and then tying the calf.
Another distinctive feature is the rear latigo strap, along with the front latigo strap. The rear girth needs to be snug enough to keep the saddle in place while holding the calf. The ability to adjust the rear girth precisely is important for maintaining stability throughout the run.
And lastly, one of the most important components of a calf roping saddle is the saddle tree. A sturdy roping tree is essential because it forms the foundation of the saddle. These trees are typically made of wood covered in rawhide and are designed to withstand the force exerted in calf roping, ensuring the saddle maintains the necessary support for both horse and rider.
