Training a dog is not hard but it does take effort in time, patience and consistency. Unwanted behaviors of jumping, grabbing and mouthing got Ernie put on the euthanasia list. His puppy owners unintentionally reinforced these behaviors as a puppy and as he grew the unwanted behaviors became stronger. Not seeking help and not wanting to put time into training him, they surrendered him to a shelter at the age of 10 months and at 11 months his training started. Through much patience and consistency of reinforcing calm behaviors, these new calm behaviors replaced the unwanted behaviors. Using techniques that are taught in the Beginning Foundation Training, Ernie is learning how to politely behave in the human world. He has learned that a sit is like saying, “please, may I” rather than jumping and grabbing to get what he wants. Simple? Yes, it is, but it also takes time. There were no “quick fix” techniques and Ernie’s transformation did not happen overnight. He is almost 13 months old and still has much to learn. During this transformation process he has learned "how to learn" which speeds up the training process. Ernie has a sweet temperament, is a quick learner and happily makes the effort to learn and engage. Videos of some of Ernie’s training has been documented and will be posted here in the future.
