We get to see some amazing wildlife while walking pups - this is a Fox Squirrel native to North Carolina! They're much bigger than the typical gray squirrels you'll see. Due to the large and less dense long leaf pine forests that are their usual habitat.

There are two subspecies found in NC. The Midwestern Fox Squirrel found in the northern mountain and foothill counties. These are a range of colors - red, blonde, brown and even orangish.

The second is a Southeastern version found South and Eastward in NC (and probably the one that's startled or shocked you with their size)! These are typically darker in color. With a black face or back.

Our friend here is most likely a Southeastern Fox Squirrel!

So, keep your eyes peeled for an extra-large squirrel that may be hanging out in your backyard.

February is Spay and Neuter Awareness Month - Did you know Moore Humane Society AND Feline Friends of Moore County offer TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) programs? Feral adults are spayed or neutered to control the cat population, while kittens are socialized, fostered and adopted. 💜❤️
