National American Eagle Day: Protecting Our Eagles & All Wildlife from Lead Toxicity

How You Can Help:

โ—พ Prevent Lead Pollution: Lead toxicity in wildlife is primarily caused by discarded fishing tackle and spent ammunition. Dispose of these properly to avoid leaving harmful debris in nature.
โ—พ Use Non-Lead Alternatives: Switch to non-lead fishing weights and ammunition to reduce the risk of lead poisoning in eagles and other wildlife.
โ—พ Clean Up Outdoors: Regularly pick up litter, especially lead debris, to keep habitats safe.
โ—พ Spread Awareness: Educate others about lead toxicity and how they can help protect wildlife.
โ—พ Support Wildlife Rehabilitation: Donate to organizations like HARPโ€™s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center that treat animals affected by lead toxicity. Treatment is costly and involves lengthy chelation therapy.

If you find a sluggish or immobile bird, contact HARPโ€™s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center Helpline at 412-345-7300 ex. 500.

Celebrate National American Eagle Day with us by keeping our environment lead-free and safe for all wildlife!

๐Ÿ˜‡ Makeover Monday featuring Kaia!

๐Ÿ› Kaia got a bath from The Dog Stop and is now fresh, clean, and ready to go home. Kaia is an energetic, sweet young pup, about a year and a half old, who loves playing fetch! With her boundless enthusiasm and loving nature, Kaia brings sunshine to any home. She needs a bit of guidance in manners so an adoptive home with working breed experience would be a perfect match.

๐Ÿถ Kaia enjoys playing with other dogs, so she might thrive in a home with a playmate. With patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, Kaia will blossom into the well-behaved pup she's meant to be.

๐ŸŒŸ Happy Caturday! ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ Follow the trail of breadcrumbs straight here to meet Gretel! This sweet girl is looking for a calm home where she can relax and enjoy her days. Gretel is a lovebug, but she can get overstimulated with too much attention, so a cat-savvy owner who can read her body language is a must.

๐Ÿ˜ป She has lived with another cat before, so she may be open to sharing her furever home with one, as long as they are introduced slowly. Gretel isn't a fan of young humans and will need to be adopted by an adult-only home.

โฃ๏ธ Currently, Gretel is on a couple of medications following a dental procedure and has FLUTD, which weโ€™ll be happy to discuss with potential adopters.

๐Ÿก Bring Gretel home today and let her fill your life with love and purrs! ๐Ÿพโค๏ธ

So, don't be in a pickle โ€“ choose Cornichon and let the good times brine!

๐Ÿคฉ Introducing your new buddy, Buddy! This gentle boy came to us from a home where he missed out on walks, so he's been on a journey to shed some weight and embrace the great outdoors! While he's been learning to walk on a leash, he still finds stairs challenging and is managing Osteoarthritis with medication.

โฃ๏ธBuddy is incredibly affectionate and truly deserves the best! However, he can be overwhelmed by the energy of young children. As a herding breed, Buddy may exhibit typical herding behaviors and would thrive in a home without small children.

Introducing Lexi! ๐Ÿพ

This adorable sweetheart found her way to us when her previous owner couldn't care for her anymore. Lexi's had some experience living with another feline friend, but she might thrive best as the sole queen of her castle in a tranquil environment. Though she may be a bit reserved initially, Lexi's heart is full of warmth, and once she gets comfortable, she loves to chirp and greet you with a gentle hello.

Lexi does have a couple medical conditions that we'd be happy to discuss with any potential adopter. If you're ready to open your heart and home to this charming senior lady, then come meet Lexi at HARP East Side! ๐Ÿ’–

Our Story

The Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center and Western PA Humane Society, each with long histories of helping animals in our community, have joined to become Humane Animal Rescue! Earlier this year, our two organizations merged to form one of the largest animal welfare associations in Pennsylvania, tasked with providing enhanced services to domestic and wild animals alike. Humane Animal Rescue continues the legacies of the ARL & WPHS, bringing greater efficiency in animal care processes, staff training, and cutting-edge practices to one cohesive organization. We strive to provide all aspects of care to abandoned, neglected, and injured animals; reunite lost pets with their caregivers or seek new families for them; educate the community on humane care and interactions with all animals with the goal of reducing pet overpopulation and negative relationships with native wildlife; reinforce a standard of living for animals and prevent cruelty; and provide assistance and medical care to injured, orphaned, or ill native Pennsylvania wildlife with a goal of returning them to their natural habitat. Our open door policy ensures that no animal is ever refused shelter. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This page is for Humane Animal Rescue supporters. We encourage discussion and invite your opinions and comments, including disagreement.
