*Cats ok, dogs ok, no kids, possible sport prospect*
Meet Dudley, a 3 year old poodle mix looking for his new home. I have had this guy in foster for about 3 months, and he is finally ready! He is a sweet, playful guy who needs a home that will give him the patience and consistency he needs. He is a dog that is very attached to his family members, and nobody else. Dudley does not mind cats, and gets along with patient dogs. He loves to play with his humans and other dogs, but can be very vocal while playing (hence needing a patient dog friend). He is very energetic, and might be a good candidate for dog sports. He does not mind being picked up and enjoys cuddling. Dudley has strong basic obedience, walks well on a leash, is crate trained, and can be trusted off leash with an ecollar. *Things to consider before considering Dudley- Dudley should not be around children under the age of 14, and would prefer a household with few visitors. He does not do well when being introduced to new people, and while he CAN eventually make new friends, it is a lengthy process. He prefers to be kenneled when visitors are over. He is a dog that thrives on structure and consistency, and would do well with a more skilled dog owner or someone willing to continue training lessons with him. He is a food guarder, and therefore must have timed feedings and be kenneled when he has treats/chews. While with me, I have worked extensively with him on this and he has a great leave it and very good food manners around people now. Lastly, Dudley has historically only gotten along with one groomer 😅 His groomer is currently located at The Big Easy in Lawrenceville. To be introduced to a new groomer, Dudley would need a lot of visits and a groomer with a lot of patience!! Dudley’s adoption includes lifetime training support from me. He is healthy and UTD on shots. Dudleys new home must be within an hour of the Pittsburgh area so that I can continue training with him. There is an adoption fee.

Foster dog Blue went to his new forever home today ❤️ the happiness that he has given his new family makes everything worth it. I will miss him, and I 100% cried in the car on the way home, but he is so happy and comfortable on his new couch. Thanks to all that helped him along his way 🥰

Testing your dogs for DM is important !

A little pattern of the transmission of genetic diseases

CLEAR
This finding indicates that the gene is not present in your dog. Therefore, when used for breeding, a Clear dog will not pass on the disease gene.

CARRIER
This finding indicates that one copy of the disease gene is present in your dog, but that it will not exhibit disease symptoms. Carriers will not have medical problems as a result. Dogs with Carrier status can be enjoyed without the fear of developing medical problems but will pass on the disease gene 50% of the time.

AFFECTED
This finding indicates that two copies of the disease gene are present in the dog. Unfortunately, the dog will be medically affected by the disease.

Tools aren’t cruel unless the intention is to be cruel. I always tell people to do what they need to do to enjoy their dog. Your dog should not ruin your life!

EIGHT RULES FOR KIBBLE

No dog food has ever been shown to be better than any other.

Read that sentence again.

Got it?

No?

Read it again.

With that in mind, I advise folks to feed whatever they want. Every fat person is CERTAIN that *what* they eat is more important than *how much* they eat. There’s no fighting it, and I’m not trying.

I feed my dogs mostly kibble (Purina Dog Chow), with a few vegetables to thin them down and a few frozen wings to plump them up.

Why kibble? Simple: Kibble is fire treated, well-mixed, fortified with micronutrients, and is less likely to produce contamination and dietary deficiencies as a result.

Most working dog people feed mostly kibble. This is true for Dakota gun dog guys, Scottish shepherds, French houndsmen, and Alaska mushers.

Does this mean *you* should be feeding mostly kibble?

Nope.

Do what you want. Most pet dogs are going to be OK so long as they are not fed too much.

But if you *do* decide to feed mostly kibble, as most dog owners do, what are my recommendations in this arena?

Eight suggestions:

▪️Buy from companies that have been making dog food for many decades -- they have a reputation to protect.

▪️Buy from companies that make their own dog food in their own factories, and avoid "lick and stick" companies that simply design labels and marketing campaigns while a nameless company three time zones away actually makes the product.

▪️Buy "complete" food that has undergone a feed trial. It's a minimal test, to be sure, but it says a lot if a company has not gone to the trouble and expense.

▪️Buy your dog food from stores that sell a lot -- turnover is important to avoid mold. Grocery and farm feed stores get a strong recommendation.

▪️Price does not determine quality; paying more for dog food only means you are paying more.

▪️The most common allergy is to beef, and few dogs actually benefit from exotic meats, grains, or vegetables. Salmon is not necessarily better than chicken, and lentils is not better than corn or rice.

▪️Feed your dogs less. Over 40 percent of American dogs are obese, and most veterinarians can go a month without ever seeing a dog in proper weight and in fit condition. Your dog should get no snacks or treats, and only one person should be allowed to feed the dog. If a dog is being trained, reduce food intake a bit (in order to increase motivation), and feed the kibble that would normally be in the dog's bowl, but by hand, in very small amounts, as a reward for performance.

▪️I urge caution if the words holistic, natural, premium, or human grade are on a bag. When companies use nonsense words they are telling the world they think their customers are idiots.

✨ STOP BUYING THESE ✨

If you find an ecollar that’s less than $200, it’s nothing but a guaranteed piece of s**t and I’d HIGHLY recommend not using it on your dog! Cheap price means cheap quality and if you’re using this with your OFF LEASH dog, quality/safety should be your top priority!

What are the low quality red flags?! 🚩🚩🚩

🚩 INCONSISTENCY: the intensity of your stimulation can vary even if it’s set to a specific number. So if your dogs working number is an 8, the actual stim they feel can vary from a 3 up to a 15. You take a risk of not only over correcting your dog but your dog may also not even feel the stim when you DO need it! 😬

🚩NO FLEXIBILITY: If you find a brand with LOW, MED, and HIGH…you don’t have the availability to gradually fluctuate as needed. Either your dog doesn’t feel it at all or gets fried—there is no in between. And that’s NOT fair to your dog.

🚩LIFESPAN: these crappy models will only last, maybe a year. I know because I had one before I knew what i was doing. The mini educator I use on my personal dog has lasted about 3.5 years now and still going strong! 💪🏼

🚩 DELAY: some brands have shown to have a 30 second delay between the time you press the button and the time your dog actually feels it! 30 SECONDS!! So if you need to stop your dog from running into a busy street, even 5 seconds can be the difference in life and death. That should be pretty self explanatory—why it’s not worth it. 🙅🏻‍♀️

E-Collars are NOT the issue… Having the appropriate knowledge on these incredible communication tools and knowing which brand to purchase and how to properly use them on your dog is KEY! 🔑

🚩🚩🚩 DO NOT BUY AN E COLLAR THATS ON SALE FOR $50 BECAUSE IT “SEEMS LIKE A GOOD DEAL” 🚩🚩🚩you could completely ruin your dog if you assume it’s easy to use and slap it on your dog with no real knowledge!

Please reach out to a responsible, ethical, balanced trainer to help you learn this tool inside and out and all of the amazing things it can do for your training and relationship with your dog! 😊 I’m happy to help! 🥰

For the record, I only use E-Collar Technologies for my personal dogs as well as all Board & Trains! I feel they are the absolute best! We are a dealer for them too! 😉

There are many methodologies, ideologies & techniques when it comes to training your dog. For owners, it can be an exceptionally confusing experience to navigate. However the ONE aspect which should never falter while training your dog is COMMUNICATION.

E Collar training should be looked at as the "icing on the cake" of a great foundation you have created with your dog. An electronic collar does NOT solve your behavioral issues or provide a magic wand type of experience. The truth is an E Collar provides no context or direction, it only enhances it. An owner must use this tool in conjunction with this in mind.

Clear communication- E Collars allow communication with dogs through a language they already know and understand, touch. E Collars are muscle stimulators. They "grab" the muscle & pulsate them. Think of it as tapping someone on the shoulder or even grabbing them by the arm.

Reliability- E Collars create non negotiable boundaries you are able to enforce in a non confrontational & neutral way.

Off Leash Freedom- E collars allow for communication with dogs at a distance. Many collars have a range of 1/2 mile! You can feel confident in letting your dog off leash after training.

Relationship- Clear communication improves any relationship. E Collars can bridge the gap between human & dog.

Do you see a shut down dog? A terrified dog? Or a dog that is happy to be working with its owner, enjoying fresh air and a walk? E collars are not meant to hurt dogs. I know I advocate for ecollars a lot on my page, and it may be repetitive, but this tool is so sorely misunderstood. If your dog doesn’t look like this the first time the ecollar goes on, then find a different trainer. This tool is not to be used harshly.

I ALWAYS recommend these collars, and so many clients don’t know what they are, so I thought I’d do a little post detailing them.
Martingale collars, also known as a limited slip collars, are in my opinion one of the safest collars you can use. If fitted correctly, dogs can’t get them off, they don’t endlessly choke a dog, and they provide enough pressure to remind a dog not to pull (if trained). Originally used for racing greyhounds, these became really popular with bully breed owners as well. Dogs with thick necks can often slip collars over their heads. A martingale collar is tightened to be snug against the neck, so when pulled, it tightens more and can’t slip over the skull. Inescapable, and perfect for dogs that are a flight risk. These also have a limit to how much they tighten, so unlike a choke chain, a dog can’t attempt to behead itself while pulling. I prefer these in 1.5” or more thickness, to provide more surface area against the throat. However, with proper training, your dog shouldn’t be pulling at all 😉

Did you enjoy yesterdays weather?! We did! Spoon went on a training walk to O’Hara Community Park, and he did AMAZING!!! We passed several dogs and I was able to redirect his attention every time. We play a lot of ‘look at that’ games with Spoon; let him look at a dog, acknowledge it’s there, and then look back to me for a treat. This guy has grown so much while being here, I’m so proud of him.

There is a movie coming out on Feb 18 called "Dog". It stars Channing Tatum and a highly trained Belgian Malinois. It's a road trip/buddy movie.

People are going to see this film and many will want their own Belgian Malinois. This is not going to end well for this breed.

A highly trained Malinois is a work of art. So is Michelangelo's statue of David but I don't necessarily want it in my living room.

This breed can be amazing in the right hands but they require a lot of everything. If you are considering getting a Malinois, please, first go meet some Malinois of all ages at your local rescue.

Be honest with yourself about the amount of time that you have to dedicate to training one of these dogs. Not the person that you want to be but the person that you are right now. Sitting on your ass and reading this post.

If you are still determined to get one. You can stem the inevitable tidal wave of Malinois that will be surrendered to the shelters by sourcing your dog in one of 3 places:

Your local shelter
A local Malinois rescue
A real, ethical breeder (researching one is hard work but an ethical breeder will prove their dogs and require that you return the dog to them if you can't keep it)

DO NOT get a Malinois from the guy down the street. Don't help backyard breeders line their pockets. Pure bred doesn't equal good breeding.

If you see the popularity of these dogs sky rocket and think you can make a quick buck by breeding some. May all of your financial ventures fail one after another.

From the bottom of my heart, I love this breed. I know what's coming and so do the shelters and rescues.
