I’m reading through War and Peace.
Its long worded, rustling and vanillin scented pages bringing me so much solace through these long, lonely, cold months. It’s pointing me into lives I’ve only dreamed about in another time, but aren’t a much different a world than my own, really. The beauty, and balls, wealth and war…far off in history but not so distant from my own little lifetime…the snow, and life; friendship and sadness and disappointment and realization and changing of things… not far at all from mine.
And again, literature, beautiful words with a flickering fire… somewhere… is a thing that anchors a human soul, to time, to place, to ponder, to grace. Even in the midst of winter and desolation.

After 2 years of not kneading this dough, and “forgetting” my recipe, and failing miserably… I’ve come back. Making scones and gathering the last of the flowers in the oddly warm but holds a chill Autumn air is thrilling. And a much more cozy time to put on my stove and bake for people, to bring forth sweet smelling golden pastry filled with butter and reminisces of a home we may never had had, but longed for in picture books.
Long story short… I’ve remembered my recipe and it was a joy to get my rings full of buttery dough and bake for women across town.

It starts with an overly expensive delicious meal in your 20s. Add some European and Turkish eating for good measure. Start by making good pasta, and figuring out soup. With everything from the store in plastic…
Burn things. Like garlic …( everytime!)
Throw things in a pan and when it’s incredible, forget to write it down.
Scour old cookbooks, laugh at the things put in jello, drool over the desserts.
Make things that you can’t even stomach….
Watch your friend make incredible meals while balancing a baby on her hip. ( her pizza is amazing.)
Have a love affair with cheese.

Then on a chilled Spring May evening, one throws a bunch of ingredients ( mostly still in plastic…) in a pan and… 🤌🏻
Pan fried gnocchi and walnuts with Gorgonzola cream sauce. With arugula, because color. ☺️
I’m not the chef in my family, that honor goes to , but I love good food, so much, and over the years it’s been fun to create and eat… and serve. Honestly, if you hang out with our family be prepared to gain a few well deserved pounds.

It’s a Tuesday. In Spring. Glittering frost greets us in the morning and pale chilled sun bades us goodnight. The children ( and there are many) are bright eyed and smell of fresh air and wildness. It is a good evening for wild duck breast, wild trout, fresh baked bread, pretty wine, cooing babies and dramatic dreams…
I reminisce of French farmhouse feast from long ago.

A lovely evening spent at the with 10 people a roaring fire and good company… and dreams to lift one’s spirits.

Reclaiming lost land…

Where I live on this wide earth is part of some of the most ancient places on the continent, one of the most forested and fertile.
And one of the most misused and abandoned.
When we stumbled into this place over a year ago, my spirit was in chaos. Much like the land. Junk and shadows and weeds filled the land and disquiet filled my soul. Last year we let the land go wild, and from it saw the green and the boundaries come forth. We let the land rest and I probably should have let my soul rest more.
But it’s a fight for Eden, right? A constant struggle against the curse, against what we’ve chosen, a fight against our pride and fears.
This year there’s more paths, more spaces, more intention and potted gentle flowers planted alongside the wild and determined plants.
Garlic and onions sprouting where knotweed once choked light from the earth, kitchen herbs where mugwort once reigned, lilies, daffodils and peonies planted with care generations ago surprise me under cleared brush and dead leaves.
There are still scars and wounds, much like my soul. My arms are crisscrossed with pink scratches, and my nails are broken, there are piles of poisoned grass and barren gravel hills…
But herbs scenting the birdsong air and new trees nodding with the ancient… staring at the golden sunset, it’s a reclaiming of land and soul.

Hello! Happy Easter! 🐇☀️🌱
It’s been…a while!
I’m returning after life has been one big whirlwind change after another! Marriage, new blue farm (ish) house in a valley, hens, bees, teaching, new time with Lucca… it’s been, stretching, growing in the darkness like plants before spring.
But I HAD to share my Easter miracle.
I’ve not made my scones in almost two years. And an attempt a couple months ago was HORRENDOUS and was so demoralizing. They ended up rocks and not even the chocolate chip ones were touched, the hens wouldn’t even eat them! It was crushing.
But this morning it felt better.
As I poured, hand kneaded, mixed, and combined, the muscle memory kicked in, and it felt good. My arms are burning from the kneading and hand cutting in butter ( lots of butter!💛) but my face is flushed and my heart is happy! The scents of lemon, lavender, vanilla, basil… it’s like home. I’m finally getting to christen this house with that scent and love. 💜
Look for more baking, food, flowers, chickens and bees ( and an occasional style thrift find) to come!

Waiting for the storm to hit.

Warm candles, hot sausage soup in a mug bowl, sweet wine and new books acquired after Mass make it… Storybook.

November is showing off her stormy nature before Old Man Winter appears…

So grateful today for cheap onions and drying herbs, adding tot he warmth I hope to bring out of this kitchen for the next couple months as the world gets cold. My decor may be defined as old world, impoverished aristocracy. I prefer herbs drying from my front garden to Homegoods, and bags of onions to hobby lobby prints. Definitely on the hunt though for some lovely antique prints like the painted ceramic picture ( it’s a thing!) on my kitchen window for the upper space. Let me know if you see one.

Sometimes it’s not a blank slate, sometimes it’s slate covered in weeds and stones and deer paths…
Sometimes it’s a dream sprung like the wildflowers that won for blooming space among the weeds.
But the bees and chickens might help too.

Every body here’s favorite wildberry season! I had thought we mad missed it, as last year had a very weak crop and this year big tree shaking storms had rolled through the past week.... but wandering out into the sunshine proved to be a bounty both in crop and mood! Mulberry scones can now be made and that makes me happy!

Bells pealed through the heavy air, a rumble of soft thunder rolled down the valley, a lovely breeze ruffled our very floral hems, big drops splashed into my sons curls as he runs squealing through the long market grass.... summer at the means sweltering heat, vintage thrifted clothing and random thunder showers, and it’s a good life.

My market partner and I are always getting comments about the beauty and femininity of our booth at the market. I love bringing beauty into the world and letting it fill people’s vision.

Welcome new followers. Now that the market is going again, I thought I’d say a bit about me.
I’m a single mom, with a precocious 5 , almost six, year old boy.
I won’t be a single mom by November as The Gentleman asked for my hand in marriage and I’m affianced! I’m so happy to start this new season of my life.
I’m a lazy Charlotte Mason loving homeschool momma to said little Man.
I’m obsessed with vintage clothing and antiques and history.
I’m a teacher and a baker and I wish a candlestick maker, but mostly play with yarn in my not spare time.
I care for many other children in my life and I love them all.
I’m committed to the idea that our lost village/ community life has been so detrimental and I hope to have a little one around me always.
Happy Sunny Summery Friday all.
