This week is Polar Bear Week! Human-polar bear conflict is a growing problem across the Arctic as melting sea ice is forcing more polar bears ashore. We are greatly saddened to announce the sudden passing of our western lowland gorilla silverback, Ivan. A loss is always devastating, but it is particularly difficult with a beloved animal like Ivan who inspired countless Zoo guests as an ambassador of his species. World Bamboo Day 2024 at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium

Today is World Bamboo Day, which celebrates one of the world’s most versatile plants. This fast-growing giant grass is hollow, yet super strong, and used for many different purposes. Did you know the Pittsburgh Zoo grows its own bamboo for its animal residents? Curator of Horticulture and Grounds Joe Williams gives the straight facts on this amazing plant.

Jack O'Lantern Extravaganza

Pumpkin spice pervades across the land, Autumn leaves are close at hand, Families in search of fun that’s new? Pumpkins are coming to the Zoo! The brand-new Jack O’Lantern Extravaganza is the perfect combination of nighttime family fun, the spirit of autumn, and artistry! Create a new fall family tradition as the Zoo glows with the light of thousands of artistically carved pumpkins! For tickets, visit: https://bit.ly/3SZufIB

Painting is part of the Zoo’s training and enrichment program and helps enage the animals’ sense of touch, smell, and sight. Using nontoxic colors and canvases, our wild artists-in-residence can create one-of-a-kind masterpieces and stunning pieces of art. With a little assistance from their keepers, each animal develops their own unique way of expressing themselves. 🎨🖼️

August is National Catfish month. Their name comes from their whiskers, which are sensory organs that help them taste and smell. Found on every continent except Antarctica, they thrive in our local waters and in our Aquarium, such as these South American species – the ripsaw and the photobombing redtail.

Lewis' 18th Birthday

Celebrating 18 years of someone we all look up to - Lewis the giraffe! 🦒 The big guy celebrated with a towering three-tiered cake and some special birthday gifts. Hoping many new adventures stretch ahead for our friend who stands head and shoulders above the rest! ❤️
