It’s extremely rare that I’ll mate two ash reds together, but this pairing seems so right. 303-20 C**k is off 9318x4119 and has flown in my comp kits for four years. 301-24 Hen is off 714x9315. 714 is a full brother to 303-20. She flew in my kit that won this last NCF and is a dandy fast spinner. I’ll pinch one or two rounds off them then get them back into the kits for spring.

Race fuel. This past season I toyed with my fly mix a bit. It’s similar to what I used to feed the young bird race teams, due to the substantial use of depurative. Once the babies are up and kitting I switched over to this except for during the molt period. This is one part depurative, one part 8-way and one part red winter wheat with a dash of white Milo. White Milo is straight nitro energy drink fuel so you have to be real careful with it. It’s high octane, so just a pinch. If flying everyday they will get strong on this high carb mix so some changing up to straight peas and rest is necessary from time to time to recycle their condition point. I’ve been feeding this over the winter to see how the kit birds would hold body and they’ve been in exceptional condition and have been flying well over an hour.
Don’t be afraid to tinker with your feeds.
Since I know someone is going to ask, it’s: barley, wheat, oats, red and white Milo, safflower, black oil sunflower, a small amount of split peas and millet.

Happy New Year!

12/31/2024

I was going through some old photos and came across this video I took of when Scott sent me 15 of the 16 original 2013 banded McKinney imports which I got from him in 2019. (Excluding the West of England Tumbler of course). Several of these are the parents of the few offspring that, through breeding-proven, have become the foundation of the birds I fly today. Ironically, and much to my surprise still to this day, in the one year that I bred from them, I didn’t stock a single bird that I bred from the imports. Weird, but true. Two of the original 2013 c**k birds in this video I still have and both still fertile. The only ash red (221-13) in this group is the father to my foundation 9318-18 c**k bird.

So today I decided to go through the old hen and old c**k kits and pair a half dozen pairs up for a quick one round. The first three old hens I grabbed are full sisters. You’ll hear a lot of 9318 mentioned and some other band number talk that will be interesting to some of you.

Three weeks off. Old hens still got some sauce. Bitter cold and rainy today. Decided to try and fly the old girls after not being flown for several weeks. Here’s the first five minutes before my hands froze 🥶. Gotta love breaks behind the trees 😂.

Tis the season! Time to kick start the 2025 breeding season! I still have four more red/yellow pairings and three more black/andalusian pairings to put together but I’ll have to wait until after the National for most of those.

Watch this video twice, let it sink in. 😉
