After receiving an ugly message this morning about the size of someone’s dachshund that they purchased from Bear Creek, I feel like I need to make an educational post.
Dachshunds come in two sizes. A miniature dachshund and standard dachshund are the SAME breed. All miniatures were bred down from standard size and it’s not unusual to produce them, even with two true miniature parents. A breeder cannot consult their crystal ball and guarantee a size for you. If a breeder tells you that they can, they’re lying. Two miniature dachshunds being paired does increase the likelihood of puppies being that size, but like I said, there are still no guarantees. If your love for your dog is conditional and based on the size that they grow to be that’s determined by the crapshoot that is dachshund genetics, maybe this isn’t the breed for you.
A breeder can give you their best estimate but outside of that, there are just no guarantees when it comes to size. We are more focused on raising healthy dachshunds with good structure and temperaments. So before telling me you got “ripped off” because you were charged for a miniature dachshund and got a standard., please consider that no other breeder could have given you a definite weight of the offspring of a pair of dachshunds.
