It would be nice if stories like this one were few and far between but unfortunately that’s not the case in areas with large populations of intact community and feral cats. This tiny baby was discovered by volunteer trapper extraordinaire Rachel who was working to TNR colonies in the KCMO area. It IS possible to reduce the number of cats born who suffer and die because of the harsh conditions they are forced to endure but we need your help. Trappers volunteer their free time to assist caretakers and other concerned citizens with trapping community cats and coordinating spay and neuter appointments for them. But those appointments cost money, even when they are done through low-cost clinics. If you’ve ever said “I wish I could do something to ease the suffering of community cats” now is your chance and now is the time. We are in a crisis. But if every person who lives in and around the Kansas City metro donated just one dollar, we could help solve that crisis and improve the lives of cats by fixing them and preventing more kittens like this one from being born. Please donate if you can. If you are a business owner and would like to make a tax-deductible donation we’d love to work with you and promote your support across our donor and supporter base. If you can’t donate money you can help by donating time - even just one night helping to trap cats at local colonies can make a difference as can donating supplies, helping with transportation, etc. And until there are no more cats and kittens being born into lives of misery and suffering, ADOPT LOCAL! Responsible rescue organizations know that there are many cats and kittens in our immediate area who need help and homes but cats and kittens are still being shipped in by local groups. Many of these animals are placed in big box pet supply adoption centers which makes it even harder to find loving homes for local cats. This baby will likely end up blind but cats are very adaptable so we are hopeful we can help her heal and then find her a forever home. Stay tuned for updates!

Sapphire is headed home! This gorgeous girl needed just the right adopters due to her deafness and extreme dislike of other animals. Her new parents have reptiles for pets but were ready for a pet to cuddle. Sapphire is perfect because she absolutely loves spending time with people and will let you cuddle her all day long. Thanks to our friends at for giving this girl a chance to find her new family and for a generous supporter who sponsored her adoption fee. Happy trails, Princess Sapphire!

We really could use a foster (or adopter!) for Dotty! She and Foxy are back together again and puppy + puppy = chaos. It’s so much easier to teach puppies how to be good canine citizens when they are not distracted by a littermate. I have to go on some business trips soon and have nobody to help take care of these girls. I hadn’t expected to have them for as long as I have - I thought everyone wanted puppies 🤔

Dotty went to stay with friends last week and had a ton of fun playing with their kids and going for walks with them. She is a sweet, playful girl who will do best in an active home. She has some heeler in her so she’s smart as a whip and will be great for someone who likes to hike or run or go for walks. She’s about 14 weeks old and has been spayed and given all age-appropriate vaccines. She gets along fine with other dogs (she is submissive to them) and she is used to staying in a crate when the humans are away.

If you can help foster her please reach out to [email protected]. If you can’t foster, please share her info so we can find her a great home.

What are you waiting for?! Schedule a visit to now to meet this handsome, 15-pound ball of love! Maximus was found as a stray in Holden, MO. He was badly matted but still full of sweetness and affection for his adopted caretaker. He got brushed out but one of the mats had to be clipped because it was so bad. Although he looks a little disheveled now, he’s going to be a stunner when all his fur has grown back and he’s able to be brushed regularly. We estimate Max to be 2-3 years old. He has been an absolute delight even when he went to the vet for a check-up and vaccines! Max definitely has some Maine C**n in him given his size and features, so all you Maine C**n lovers, now is the chance to adopt one of the nicest guys in Kansas City!

We need your support to help dozens of cats and kittens that live in an Independence, MO mobile home park. Over the last year, one of the most amazing volunteers we know has worked hard to try to help the cats at Highland Park Manor. It started when we were contacted about newborn kittens with what appeared to be a chewed-off leg with bone exposed. We were able to get two babies (the third had died) and mom into foster and the kitten recovered and was adopted with her sister. While we were there we realized just how many cats and kittens there are who need help. Many were sick or injured or skinny, and kittens were running in and out of empty trailers and lots filled with debris. It was overwhelming and sad. Over the last year the wonderful volunteer has spent hours of her own time working to trap cats and kittens so they could be fixed and/or placed in rescue - she did all of this despite suffering from a severe medical emergency and a hospital stay. She has helped well over 100 cats with the support of several organizations in the area. But there are still many, many more that need to be trapped and fixed as well as treated for illnesses and injuries. Unfortunately, the city of Independence will not provide assistance with any of the work being done to help these cats so it is up to small organizations like ours to step in and assist. We would love for this to be the year that all of the cats living in the neighborhood are fixed to prevent more kittens from being born and suffering from preventable illnesses and unfortunate demises. We estimate there at least 100 more cats to trap and fix or place in rescue and at $50 per cat for the most basic TNR services that adds up quickly. We are committed to facilitating surgery appointments through our spay and neuter program for all of the cats at this location if we can secure funding to cover the costs. These photos show just some of the cats and kittens that have come from the neighborhood over the last year. Please make a donation if you can. Every dollar helps and these cats deserve a chance at happy, healthy lives!

This sweet and scared mama and her three babies were found in a cardboard box that had been taped shut and left at the front door of our cafe partner . It’s 81 degrees and humid. The box was left at a door that isn’t used and is feet from a busy, loud road. They were lucky that one of the staff noticed the box from inside the cat lounge and that the tape was secure enough to prevent them from escaping and getting hit on the nearby road. People who dump animals like this are not only committing a crime (animal abandonment) - they are also irresponsible cowards who think it’s okay to dump their “problem” on someone else to deal with. Whiskers Cat Cafe is not a licensed rescue or a non-profit. They partner with us to help cats in our licensed rescue find homes. So even though we are overwhelmed already with cats and kittens and even though funds have been very tight, I’ll be going up today to get them and make sure they are not suffering from dehydration after being abandoned in the hot weather. They will come into our rescue so they can be fixed and vaccinated and prepared for adoption. This means that other cats who were on the list to come into rescue will have to wait a bit longer because apparently the people who abandoned this little family are more important than everyone else and therefore should not have to go through the same process for surrendering a pet. If you can donate toward their care it would be very much appreciated - visit our site at www.feline-fix.org for the donation link or to order supplies from our wish list. We appreciate the support of our community of cat lovers and thank you for helping us help local cats.

Howard was a community cat in Holden, MO, a rural town where there are a lot of cats with no homes. They live hard lives and we have taken many into rescue to find them forever homes. Howard was lucky enough to find a guardian angel in a local lady who provides shelter and feeds many of the town’s cats. He’s been part of her brood for many years but recently Howard began to decline in health. He has cancer and his mom has realized it’s time to help him pass peacefully - a gift we are so fortunate to be able to give the pets who have provided love and companionship to us throughout their lives. Like many people, though, his mom is on a limited budget and has not been able to afford to pay $200+ to have Howard euthanized at her local vet. Animals should never have to suffer because it’s too expensive to euthanize them. I told Howard’s mom to make an appointment today at the urgent vet and I will pay for the costs. Money is tight for me, too, so if you can make a donation to help Howard pass with dignity and comfort, it would be much appreciated. You can Venmo a tax-deductible donation to which will get the funds into the rescue account right away to cover the costs. Many states allow for individuals who work at shelters to become certified to perform euthanasia but Missouri and Kansas do not. A bill was sponsored in 2018 to allow for the licensing of euthanasia technicians in Missouri but it stalled. I am determined to get our state representatives to revisit this topic because we need more low-cost resources for people who want to do right by their pets but may not be able to afford the cost for an office visit and services at a private, urgent care or emergency clinic.

A couple of weeks ago King John came to us to be neutered and to have a gaping wound on his neck treated. We weren’t sure if he was going to be a social kitty but fast forward to today and you can see the verdict is in - he’s over-the-top sweet! He managed to get some of his sutures out so he’s going back to the vet on Saturday to have the wound closed again. Fortunately this time it’ll be a little easier because there is healthy tissue to close what is now a smaller opening. King John has been enjoying a cozy bed and daily room service so he will soon look like the handsome gentleman we know he is. He cannot get enough attention and he loves to make biscuits and rub against your leg. He has had a hard life up until now and we are thrilled to be able to help him find his own happily ever after!

Dotty is a three-month-old heeler mix who has ears for dayyys. She and her sister are sweethearts and Dotty has an entertaining personality. Her favorite thing to do is “walk herself” on the leash. She will take it into her mouth and just hold it while you take her out for potty breaks. Dotty also likes to sleep upside down with her feet pointed in different directions. She’s a very smart girl who would love a home with an active person or family. She will be a great hiking or running companion and then she will happily sleep in bed with you - upside down.
