In September of 2000 we saw the need for a place for abused, abandon, neglected and wayward dogs in our area to go where they could be loved, rehabbed and find forever homes. That was the birth of Southwest Pennsylvania Retriever Rescue Organization, or SPARRO. Just one year later with the tragedy of 9/11, SPARRO was thrust into the forefront of rescue in our area. In 2000 we where able to rescue

4 dogs, but after the WTC attack and throughout 2001 we took in and re-homed 133 dogs, including 2 chocolate lab brothers directly from the NYC area just one week after the attack. Over the years SPARRO has continued to grow and to date we are very close to rescuing our 1,000th wayward dog. We have helped dogs from every single state east of the Rockies and many from Canada as well. We helped with the dogs of Hurricane Katrina and continue to work closely with our contacts in New Orleans to bring great dogs north to forever homes whenever we can. SPARRO always has young, beautiful retrievers available for adoption which you can see on our Adoption page. Saving One Dog Won’t Change The World, But Surely, For That One Dog The World Will Change Forever

Our friend and former volunteer Kim Ann has been doing fundraisers for a group that she has supported for several years. She shares the donations 50/50 with a local group that her followers nominate. We are honored to be the chosen group for her next event. It is a cash Bush and will take place here in Plum PA in a few weeks.

The best part is you don't have to be at the event to win. Just purchase the number of tickets you want, each has three numbers, and if your number comes up arrangements will be made to get the winnings to you. Tickets can be purchased from Kim through venmo or if you want to use PayPal, check or cash you can message me and we will set that up.

If you have any questions feel free to ask here or message me or Kim. Since we can't do our Hearts for Paws fundraiser anymore this will be a huge help for the SPARRO dogs.

I have always been proud to say every dog that comes through SPARRO has lived with Barb and me so we know exactly what their personality is and who would be be the best match for them. The only down side is when we have emergencies and no one to help us with them.

We have always had a firm policy that any dogs adopted from SPARRO must be returned to SPARRO if they can't stay in the home where we placed them. We truly take responsibility for our dogs for life. Right now we are watching a little guy who was adopted a year ago while mom has a knee replacement, and 2 other dogs from the same family while their mom is in the hospital for a lengthy period, maybe 90 days +. With no adoption in the past few months this has left us beyond full. We are still on zero intake but can't turn away our adopted dogs. Fortunately the dogs mentioned will go back to their owner at some point, but in the past 24 hours I have been asked to take back 4 more dogs adopted from SPARRO. Two young friendly dogs from one person who is dealing with domestic violence and I can not hesitate to take them so she and the dogs can be somewhere safe. I don't take domestic situations lightly. The other 2 for various reasons but they are both 8 years old now and no telling how quickly or if they will ever get adopted . I simply don't have a place to put them until someone gets adopted. I am hoping to find someone who can foster either a single middle aged dog or two younger house mates. All food and vet care will be provided by SPARRO. The young dogs have had issues with running away so a fenced yard would be helpful. They are also well socialized and used to meeting new people and going for car rides.

These pups will also be available for adoption and are up to date with everything. I don't have pictures at this time and no real information on the older ones. The young ones have stayed with me multiple times a year while their owner was traveling for work.

Please let me know if you are in the Pittsburgh area, even better the Plum, monroeville, Murrysville area and are able to foster or adopt any of the dogs I have mentioned. For fosters I can bring the dogs back here when space becomes available if that would help but with adoption the way it has been it could take a while, message me here if you are able to help or adopt.
Thanks!
