Tonight marked the start of our group obedience training, covering essential commands like sit and heel. The puppies showed remarkable aptitude. We are eager to build on this foundation next week.
We have one more spot available in our group class. Let us know if you can make it.
Thor showing off his obedience
But can your dog trainer do this with 2 dogs who just met? 💁🏽♀️
When the owner says “are you sure you can handle him?”
Nope, not sure… aren’t you the one paying me?
Milo and his owner took my last group class with me. I wanted to test his behaviors to see how my teaching carried over in a group setting. SUPER work with this owner & dog. 🖤🖤 I’m so proud of them being my first family client.
Check out Chipper he is doing an amazing job. Book now for Board/Train I have spots available for June and July. Book ASAP filling up fast due to vacations. PM for questions and dates available!
REMINDER‼️
There are NO CLASSES THIS WEEKEND!!!
I will be out of town today and tomorrow, but I’ll be back Sunday for classes. See you all back in April.
Let’s talk about body language.
In the beginning of this video Sookie is showing me clear signs she’s unsure of me petting her. She is a super submissive dog so you might miss her warning signs
🐾 tight mouth
🐾 lip licks
🐾 submissively rolls over
🐾 some whale eye
🐾 uses mouth to move my hand away after engaging
🐾 pinned ears
After I give her some space she comes into me for a few pets then disengages again.
A lot of people would see this and assume the dog was enjoying the interaction. With the wrong dog, continuing to try to pet them like I did (for the purpose of this video) could lead to a bite. Knowing dogs body language is very important. Even if a dog is not aggressive they will give you warning signs that they are uncomfortable in certain situations. Respect those warnings and watch your relationship grow.
Teaching kids to be respectful of your dog is just as important as teaching your dog to be respectful of kids.
These two live in our neighborhood so when they’re out playing and see I have a new dog they like to come by and meet it.
They have learned to ask to pet my dogs before they come over. They ask questions about the dog. I keep an eye on the dogs body language and if I notice them getting uncomfortable, I have asked the kids to stop or back away. They know not all the dogs I get are friendly and they can’t pet them all, but they like to come talk and to learn and I’m fine with that.
Meeting new people or even new dogs through a fence is a great way to keep everyone safe. The dogs able to see and smell what’s on the other side but it gives them a barrier in case things go poorly. Notice I also have Chipper on leash. I want to be able to give him instant feedback if he does something wrong. The first time the boy reached his fingers through, Chipper showed his cattle dog and tried to nip for pets. I quickly gave him feedback through the leash and we reset and tried again. He did not try nipping again even when I took him through the gate on the same side of the fence with them.
Children and dogs can be a touchy subject for some people but I promise with a little patience and a leash, you can accomplish great things with your pup. Also, educate your kids about dogs and their body language. Teach them to respect boundaries and be gentle. & please never ever ever leave a child and dog unattended.
What makes a dog trainer happy?! Seeing dogs working with their owners. Here’s a few owner updates we got this week featuring Brooks,Marley, & Sable.
