Soon- the best heirloom tomatoes you have ever tasted
Our first field tomatoes are slowly ripening up. We are going to have a big harvest tomorrow morning of field grown early girls (for our stand and for ). So far, any of our tomatoes for sale have been from our hoop house. Field grown, ups the flavors
The actual heirlooms will be trickling in starting next week. We have eaten a few early ones and, my oh my! The flavor this field, soil, location and our farming techniques give a tomato is unparalleled

We know we have customers who buy our bouquets out of the farmstand. Apologies we have not been keeping the little stand stocked in flowers. It was such a windy early summer that they would wilt with in hours. Going to be putting a few out every day now with the nice marine layer in place. These were dropped off there this morning

So much goodness just got ripe
There is something the saying, a watched pot never boils; same goes for growing plants. It helped immensely to have things get bigger to go away for a week 😂
A weighted down truck and great ensemble of produce for tomorrow. Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage just joined our offerings.

We have a very special treat for market goers this morning
Year 3 of having a raspberry patch and we finally have enough to share. They are highly flavorful and highly perishable! Very tedious and time consuming to pick too.

Corn #1
6’ tall rye cover crop was finely chopped up (flail mow) then was covered by silage tarps. Thick layer of compost in line. A little forking to loosen up soil in line, then seed sown.
It’s looking great! The only weeds have been potatoes (from last fall) and bindweed which is not too hard to pull. It’s been interesting and a learning curve to slowly transition to no till growing. Corn #2 is planted in the little area of our farm that got fully tilled (our winter greens from last fall)- it was less work to plant but there will be much weeding!

Thanks crew!
We had a wonderfully productive day: the winter 2023-24 garlic all harvested, no till beds cleaned, composted and even drip irrigation in place. It was great spending a whole day getting to know the new Oz interns- we sooo appreciate your help today!
Going to immediately plant these beds with starts tomorrow. One of the goals of no-till is not leaving soil bare- put another plant in it immediately after clearing

Long hours of light. Cold earth slowly warming up
Some long hours were spent in the gale force winds so far this week. Many new plants and seeds planted and ones put in a month ago are green and growing fast. Found this large friend in the hot green house this morning

Tomatoes are in the ground!
Swipe for the before photo - totally with cover crop mostly broken down other than the rye stem mulch
With switching over to no/low till farming, there are many parts of prep that are very labor intensive. For years we refused the concept of using plastic in the growing process beyond drip tape. The plastic serves the same function as the tiller, essentially making sod or cover crop into plantable beds. The difference is that there is no soil disturbance affecting the microbiology or destroying soil structure. We have both viewed black landscape fabric as “evil”. It can break down into microplastics that end up in waterways but last season was overwhelmingly difficult with both not being able to keep up with weeding and dying plants all over the place. So, we are doing it; using this stuff in moderation just on a few crops. We plan to lift it in winter and be able to reuse for many years. One added benefit is warming around these plants which tomatoes like.

Our Story

Nature's Tune Farm is a small, two and a half acres, vegetable farm that supplies produce to the southern coast of Mendocino county. We recently switch from being certified organic by CCOF, and are now certified by the Mendocino Renegade Program. Our focus is on growing mixed vegetable crops that are sold both wholesale and direct to customers. Currently our crops are available at local grocery stores, restaurants, the Gualala and Point Arena Farmer’s Markets as well as our own Farm Stand in Point Arena. We opened the Natures Tune Farm Stand, open during growing season, to create a place in Point Arena where people can consistently find fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables.
