Our Doors Are Always OpenThe doors to the Inland Valley Humane Society & S.P.C.A. are open to every animal in need. Because we are a "full access" shelter, no animal is ever turned away. Many other shelters, animal care facilities and sanctuaries define themselves as "no-kill" shelters. While we at the Inland Valley Humane Society & S.P.C.A. salute the work of animal welfare groups everywhere, we find the label of "no-kill" to be inaccurate. Organizations like these are better defined as "limited access" shelters because they have the option of turning away animals for health, behavior and in some instances cosmetic reasons.In order to comply with their idealistic arrangement, and maintain their public image, they have to restrict their intake of animals to only those that have the best chance of being adopted. We do not have such a luxury. As a full-access shelter, the Inland Valley Humane Society & S.P.C.A. takes in sick and injured animals and those that are not probable candidates for adoption. Everyday dozens of pets that are no longer wanted are turned over to the caring hands of IVHS; every day we accept pets from people who are unable to care for them anymore; and everyday our doors open for the dozens of stray animals that are lost, abandoned and homeless. At the core of the Inland Valley Humane Society & S.P.C.A. is our obligation to care for these animals.We work vigorously to find new, loving and permanent homes for every healthy pet! Because we are a full-access shelter and never deny any animal entry, there is no set time limit for how long an animal will be available for adoption. As long as the animal is healthy and maintains a good disposition, we'll keep a pet for an indefinite period.

This is Celtic, a gentle, curious girl with a big heart and even bigger personality! Here’s what her foster family has to say about her:

“She’s a pro at catching tennis balls in mid-air, loves squeaky toys, and is quick to show off her tricks—especially if treats are involved. Though she happily sleeps in her crate, Celtic’s foster suspects she’d be even more content snuggled up on the couch or bed. She has a special way of greeting each family member, giving the youngest extra face-licks, and shows off her “Chief Inspector” skills by thoroughly sniffing every package and grocery bag. And she always knows which toy she wants from her basket, sometimes bringing it over to invite you to play!

While she may be a little shy at first, Celtic’s sweet, playful spirit shines through once she feels at home. With her unique left ear tilt and affectionate charm, she’s sure to steal your heart.”

🌿 Wildlife Wednesday Spotlight: Baby Skunk Rescue! 🌿

This little skunk, found in Ontario, was recently brought into our care before being transferred to a wildlife rehabber. Baby skunks, known as kits, are incredibly vulnerable in their early weeks—they depend fully on their mothers for warmth, nutrition, and protection. When separated, they need expert care to survive and grow strong.

Did you know? Kits need specially formulated diets and close monitoring, as well as a safe, quiet environment to prevent stress. Handling wildlife like skunks also requires care and expertise since they can spray from as young as a few weeks! That’s why wildlife rehabbers are so essential—they provide the expertise and resources needed to ensure these little ones have the best chance at a safe return to the wild. 💚

Blue is the sweetest dog with a gentle nature and excellent manners! He knows all his basic commands, walks wonderfully on a leash, and gets along with every dog he meets. When Blue first arrived at the shelter, he was very timid and underweight, but thanks to our dedicated staff and volunteers, he’s now thriving. Blue enjoys daily playgroups and joins in on our Doggie Daycation outings.

Most recently, a volunteer group from the DoubleTree Hilton in Ontario took Blue on a park adventure, where he broke into happy zoomies as soon as he hit the grass! He’s also a huge fan of belly rubs.

🎃🐾 It’s a spooky surprise! This weekend, a generous little girl donated Halloween-themed toys and treats, bringing extra joy to our shelter pets! We had a blast delivering her thoughtful gifts to our doggies all around the shelter—there were wagging tails and happy barks everywhere! And our feline friends got in on the spooky fun too, with their own Halloween toys to pounce and play with. 🐶🐱 Thank you to our young friend for making so many tails wag and whiskers twitch with Halloween joy! 🎃💜

🦉 Wildlife Wednesday Rescue Alert! 🦉 This majestic Great-Horned Owl found itself in a tough spot, tangled in a soccer net in a La Verne resident’s backyard. Thankfully, our skilled team was quick to respond, bringing the owl back to our medical center where our vet staff carefully cut it free from the netting. After a full check-up and some much-needed TLC, this beautiful raptor was given a clean bill of health and released back to its natural habitat! 💚 🌲 A big thank you to the resident who spotted it and reached out to help save a life. #WildlifeWednesday #GreatHornedOwl #WildlifeRescue #BackToTheWild
