Sitting on our back porch watching a small bird harrass a red-tailed hawk in the sky. It doesn't get any better than this (my opinion). :)

On this day in 1928, Buddy, a German Shepherd, becomes the 1st guide dog for a US citizen Morris Frank.

Morris Frank was a blind man from Nashville. His father read him an article by Dorothy Eustis, a woman living in Switzerland who had seen shepherds training dogs to lead blind people get around. Excited by the idea, Frank wrote a letter to Eustis and received a response letter 30 days later inviting him to come see for himself. Frank then took a ship to Europe and trained extensively with a dog that had been bred specifically to lead a blind person. The training was hard, but after weeks with the dog, Frank could get around the nearby Swiss village holding tightly to a harness to which Buddy was strapped.

Morris Frank returned to America. From the day he got off the ship, he was successful. At one point, in front of a group of dumbfounded reporters, Buddy led Frank safely across a busy New York street. “I shall never forget the next three minutes, Ten-ton trucks rocketing past, cabs blowing their horns in our ears, drivers shouting at us. When we finally got to the other side, and I realized what a really magnificent job he had done” Frank later wrote.
When Frank returned to Nashville, people were amazed at the sight of the blind man and his dog successfully navigating busy sidewalks and couldn’t believe that it was the same blind boy they had so recently taken pity on. What amazed people the most was that Buddy had an ability best known as “intelligent disobedience,” which meant that he would obey Morris except when executing that command would result in harm to his master. If there was a low hanging branch ahead on the sidewalk, for instance, Buddy knew how to navigate around it to the point where Morris wouldn’t hurt his head on it.

About this time, Frank, Eustis and several others cofounded The Seeing Eye, an institution set up to train guide dogs and their blind masters. Today, the organization reports that it has, in its 80-year history, trained 14,000 dogs. Buddy is considered the first. In 1978, on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the school, the U.S. issued a commemorative stamp in honor of The Seeing Eye.

The Horses Prayer
~ author unknown
Feed me, water and care for me, and when the days work is done, provide me with shelter, a clean dry bed and a stall wide enough for me to lie down in comfort.

Always be kind to me. Talk to me. Your voice often means as much to me as the reins. Pet me sometimes, that I may serve you the more gladly and learn to love you.

Do not jerk the reins, and do not whip me when going uphill. Never strike, beat or kick me when I do not understand what you want, but give me a chance to understand you.

Watch me; and if I fail to do your bidding, see if something is wrong with my harness or feet.

I cannot tell you when I am thirsty so give me clean, cool water often. I cannot tell you in words when I am sick, so watch me, that by signs you may know my condition.

Give me all possible shelter from the hot sun, and put a blanket on me, not when I am working, but when standing in the cold. Never put a frosty bit in my mouth; first warm it by holding it a moment in your hands.

I try to carry you and your burdens without a murmur, and wait patiently for you long hours of the day or night. Without the power to choose my shoes or path, I sometimes fall on the hard pavements which I have often prayed might be of such a nature as to give me a safe and sure footing.

Remember that I must be ready at any moment to lose my life in your service.

And finally, O Master, when my useful strength is gone, do not turn me out to starve or freeze, or sell me to some cruel owner to be slowly tortured or starved to death; but do thou, my Master, take my life in the kindest way. And your God will reward you here and hereafter. You will not consider me irreverent if I ask this in the name of HIM, who was born in a stable.
Amen

DEADWOOD, S.D. — Last week’s blizzard had impacts ranging from a dusting of snow to five feet in the Black Hills, and Barbara Jean Atchison sits right at the top of those totals on her Deadwood ranch. She cares for a blind mare, pregnant with a foal, and a stallion, plus plenty of other animals....

uh ohhh! This sounds very serious..
In a press release today, the National Institute of Health has announced the discovery of a potentially dangerous substance in the hair of horses. This substance, called “amobacter equuii” has been linked with the following symptoms in females:
--Reluctance to cook, clean or do housework.
--Reluctance to wear make-up, good clothes or heels.
--Reluctance to spend money on home or car repairs until after “baby has new shoes, pad, blanket, tack, grain, hay & supplements”.
“Amobacter equuii” usually results in long hours away from home and exhaustion which may lead to a loss of physical contact with other humans (especially husbands).
“Amobacter equuii” is thought to be addictive, driving the need for additional sources – this may lead to a “herd mentality” or like the potato chip commercial, “you can’t have just one”.
Beware! If you come in contact with a female human infested by this substance, be prepared to talk about horses for hours.
Surgeon General’s Warning: Horses are expensive, addictive, and may impair the ability to use common sense.

Stop Horse Colic

Have you ever been through a colic episode with your horse? Hopefully, the outcome was a good one. My mare had a severe colic episode in 2010. Luckily for her, I had just bought a bottle of a horse colic product and I gave it to her before she went down. Her legs went rigid and her eyes rolled back into her head and my husband said “she is dying”. I knew she was dying, and I felt helpless. But, after 30 minutes, she was back up and wanting to eat grass! I was so impressed with the product that saved my horse’s life, I became a distributor for the colic product that will stop a bout of colic within 30-45 minutes if the bowel has not been twisted. We have saved hundreds of horses with this product. Be prepared and order a bottle today so you will have a bottle on hand if you ever need it! 100% success rate IF the horse has not twisted its bowel and banamine has not been used. Banamine slows down the process of this product. It will still work, but takes longer, which means the horse is in pain longer than necessary. Product is 100% natural, no chemicals, all plant based. www.StopHorseColic.com - safe for dogs too!
