Miss Freya also got to stay and learn the ropes today! At first she wasn’t sure how she felt about being away from mom, but the steak treats were good and there was a playroom just for her. We understand separation anxiety and she quickly learned we are safe and she was in a fun place. She played some “find-it,” asked for pets, and took an afternoon nap in our office with us.

We love our dogs! Can’t way to see you again, Freya!

Meet Hank! This sweet boy just had his first 1-on-1 Doggy Day School 🚌 with us today, and man did he LOVE learning! He practiced his manners, keeping all 4 paws 🐾 on the ground even when he really wanted something, and he worked on his patience waiting nicely for toys, treats and games. He played “Chase the Squirrel,” worked on dropping a rope nicely when asked during tug, and learned how to run through a tunnel, jump over a bar and go through a loop too!

Good job, Hank! You got a lot in for your first day at school! 🎓

Back to Crystal! Just a few sessions later, Crystal is learning that the outdoors is safe and a happy place and she can trust me as we walk together. I’m still using a very high rate of reinforcement to encourage a positive association with focusing on me and not all the scary things. Just a few weeks ago she was so afraid of that she lunged and barked from the moment she stepped out the front door. I am so proud of this girl and excited to see how she continues to grow, feel comfortable, and learn that the world is hers to explore and enjoy!

When we first introduced the “Find It” game to Duke, he was too excitable and wasn’t very good. We even wondered if his sniffer worked well 😂. Now this game is so fun and relaxing for both of us! God boy, Duke!

Jonah loves that I am a dog trainer. I was a neuroscientist, but Jonah thinks dog training is so much more cool and relevant and probably more fun. He’s probably right. And I am no doubt so proud of him and how much he puts himself into what he believes. even more so, his passion to understand his dog is exactly what we hope to share with all of our clients. Behavior is funny, it’s messy, and it’s a dance. Mindful Canines of TX strives to teach you that dance and help you get to where you want to be with your furry pal.

A tired dog is a happy dog… it’s so true! But a common misconception about wearing dogs out is that it must be physically (“I walk my dog 3 miles a day!”). In reality, heathy mental strain is far more effective in tiring our fur babies (and us!), and with so many reactive dogs not truly enjoying those long walks, simple puzzles like this coffee mug with donuts are a great way to create a happy worn dog. This boy was panting when he couldn’t get the 3rd donut - he rested and then tried again with success! We then took a good long break and nap.
