Community update!

On 7/11 Bug escaped from her mom’s apartment balcony in the sellwood neighborhood of Portland Oregon. After a tireless month of searching, constant Facebook updates, and late nights spent searching the neighborhoods till 2am, BUG IS FINALLY HOME.

Katie and her partner Erik put everything into bringing Bug home this past month. Posters line the neighborhood streets and back alleys of oaks bottom and throughout Westmoreland. The initial search began in a .5 mile radius, slowly extending throughout sellwood over the past few weeks as the search drew on. By the end of July, we had few leads and hundreds of dollars in posters spread out. Then came the calls. Without the community of house-less individuals and their assistance we would not have known Bug went into Oaks park. That’s when the search really began, as leads started coming in.

They were able to begin a timeline of spottings, tracking bug north where she eventually took solace in the trees and came out only around 9-4am. With new leads, Bugs mom started searching Oaks park in those early and late hours.

Last night, while they sat on the bench in a dark park, Bug found them. Dirty, probably hungry, but happy.

Bug goes to the vet today to get checked up on. We send our love to this beautiful community of strangers, friends, and eventual family that have come out to show their support. If you can assist us one more time in brining down missing bug posters that would be a huge help!

What do regular dog walking services look like? Read an excerpt from our incredible Pal Kayla and her day with Marni!

Hi!

Marni was a bubbly, happy girlie and gave me some love when I arrived 🥰 we wasted no time in getting outside to enjoy the beautiful sunny afternoon 🌞

We cruised down to Tanner Springs Park and Marni was being a social butterfly, wanting to stop and say hi to everyone 🦋 on our way there we also ran into her buddy Sampson and his owner and she did her little excited b***y bounce over to him and they both were happy friends. It was so sweet to see 💕 on our route home we came across a large bush and there must’ve been a critter of some sort in there because she was standing up on her two back paws to try and check it out 🤣she did a few ones but no two.

Once home we had a little playtime together and I got her all set up in her crate with a few treats in her Kong. See her again soon! - KAYLA

Bug is missing!!!! PLEASE BOOST!! She was last seen between and in Sellwood.

Bug is formally an indoor only cat that escaped from her apartment balcony. This means she CANT FIND HER WAY HOME. She has never been outside and is most likely hiding in your backyard. Yes YOUR BACKYARD. If you live in sellwood please look out back and check your bushes. Keep an eye out for a green eyed tortishell Chonk.

She love treats and might come to you if you call for her since she’s also friendly. The owners are offering a reward. Please reach out to us if you have any sightings or information to help us reunite her with her family❤️

New client alert! Please welcome Vito and Libera - 5 month old Maine C**n kittens.

Maine c***s are a particularly active breed and require more time dedicated to playtime and mental stimulation. While highly affectionate they require daily playtime and lots of engagement to keep from growing bored. Since they are so large and hungry they can easily overcome a human. It is for your safety to dedicate the rest of your life to do their bidding. Since they are a larger domesticated feline they need more protein rich food to compensate for their growth. Be sure to do your own research before welcoming the gentle giants into your life! And remember, just because they haven’t eaten you, doesn’t mean they won’t.

Signs of Heat Stroke in Cats:

Panting: Unlike dogs, cats rarely pant. Panting in cats can be a sign of distress or heat stroke.
Drooling: Excessive drooling or frothy saliva.
Red or Pale Gums: Gums may appear bright red initially, then turn pale or bluish.
Rapid Heart Rate: Increased heart rate, which can be felt by placing your hand on the cat’s chest.
Vomiting or Diarrhea: Often accompanied by blood.
Weakness or Staggering: Difficulty walking, lethargy, or collapsing.
Disorientation: Confusion, lack of coordination, or seizures.
Collapse: Severe cases can lead to unconsciousness.

What to Do If You Suspect Heat Stroke:

Move to a Cool Area: Immediately take your cat to a shaded or air-conditioned area.
Offer Water: Provide cool (not cold) water for your cat to drink. Do not force them to drink.
Cool the Cat Down: Use cool (not ice-cold) water to wet your cat, especially on the head, neck, and chest. You can use a damp cloth or place them in a shallow tub of cool water.
Use Fans: If possible, place your cat in front of a fan to help lower their body temperature.
Monitor Temperature: If you have a thermometer, monitor their temperature rectally. Aim to bring it down to 103°F (39.4°C) but not lower.
Seek Veterinary Help: Even if your cat seems to recover, it’s crucial to get them checked by a vet as heat stroke can cause internal damage.

Prevention Tips:

Keep Indoors:Keep your cat indoors during the hottest parts of the day.
Provide Cool Spaces: Ensure they have access to cool, shaded areas and plenty of fresh water.
Air Conditioning: Use fans or air conditioning to keep the environment cool.
Limit Activity: Avoid rigorous play or exercise in hot weather.
Monitor High-Risk Cats: Be especially cautious with elderly cats, kittens, and cats with health issues or thick coats

Ayla came to us last November from a dog rescue organization saving street dogs from Iran. It was our great honor to welcome her into our community and help ease her transition to the inner city.

With the help from her sister Fleur, amazing dog parents, and dedicated Pals, she’s come such a long way! Slowly but surely we are introducing her to more of the world and things like garbage trucks seem far less interesting than smells and a good roll in the grass.

If you haven’t met Ayla, her new pals Drew summarizes her perfectly: ”Another bus passed us and Ayla didnt react. While on the way to the school, Ayla smelled a particular spot for a long time. The verdict was the smell was in fact interesting. In the field, she found a spot that she loved to roll around on.”

Heat Advisory! Hot Temps Ahead – Paw Protection Tips from the al-mighty Goose ❤️🔥

-Paw Wax: Moisturize your dog’s paws to protect them from burns and cracks.
- Dog Booties: Train your dog to use dog shoes in extreme temperatures such as heat or ice.
- Frozen Treats: Provide a cool down after walks.
- Stick to the Grass: Avoid hot asphalt, which can be 30 degrees hotter than the air temperature.
- Park Days: Utilize pet taxi services for park visits if your neighborhood is not well shaded or provides easy walking routes
- Never Leave Pets in Parked Cars: On an 80-degree day, the temperature inside a car can reach 100 degrees in just 10 minutes. This can be fatal.
- Provide Plenty of Water and Shade: Always have water available and ensure your pets have shady areas to rest in.
- Avoid Peak Temperature Hours: Walk your dog in the morning or evening to avoid the hottest part of the day. Bring water and take breaks in shaded areas.
- Keep Your Home Cool: Maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Use fans or AC to keep the house cool, especially if you have pets at home during the day.
- Proper Care During Heat Waves: Ensure your home is cool, gardens are watered, and blinds are closed. Consider extra care or boarding for pets.
- Monitor Water Intake: Dogs regulate heat by panting and drinking water. Keep their water bowls full and provide frozen backups.
- Know Your Dog’s Medical History: Older dogs or those with health conditions need extra care during hot weather.

Meet the parakeets Sunny and Hobbs! While we love taking care of dogs and cats, we will absolutely make time for our bird friends 🥹

- From our Pal .mads who always goes above and beyond to take care of their clients 💛

The birds were a chatty duo today. I came in and flushed and refreshed their water. Refilled their seeds and topped it with apple and cilantro. They’re still working on their millet it looks like! I went through and tossed some of the cilantro and then took out the compost. When I was emptying it, the bag ripped! The bottom was pretty moldy, so I rinsed and wiped it out. I didn’t see anymore plastic compostable bags under the sink, so I put a paper bag in its stead. Sorry about that! The birds are all set for the evening.

Hi! I’m Georgia, co-owner of Petpals and the main person behind this page. Now is as good of time as any to introduce myself and say good morning!

I moved to Oregon in 2015 from Arizona, don’t worry I love the rain. While earning a few degrees in psychology and counseling, I spent most of my work related time walking dogs. It’s always been the thing that grounded me, providing a much needed comfort and purpose. Well, 9 years later and now a small business owner, I’ve only recently started believing that I am right where I am meant to be.

People usually laugh when I tell them I do this professionally, not fully understanding the importance of what it means. For me, It’s a full commitment to your family system, home care, and pets. I have seen and experienced many horror stories when it comes to trusting strangers with your livelihood.

Ashly and I started Petpals to change the way we approach pet care. With my background in counseling, we put forward the same ethics to person centered care. We also instill core values around continued education, positive reinforcement, and transparent communication. Each Pal has their own LLC, pet care insurance, and must acquire their First Aid and CPR certificate. We also work with other professional pet care services like and to help ground our foundation in community resources that share our values.

If you’ve ever had a bad pet care experience in the past, you’re not alone. If you want to learn more, let’s have an in person meeting and go through a thorough intake evaluation. Let’s help connect your to puppy resources, trainers, and sniff spot/ adventure opportunities. Let’s also work with your vet and our associates at to help maintain the highest standard of care and quality of life. We are all the best of Portland.

If you’ve read this far, hi neighbor and good morning! Thanks for being a part of our community 💛

Swipe for the cutest photo set of the day from Simon and Bez, read more about their time with Kayla below.

Hello!

I arrived to the absolute sweetest of sights 🥹 the boys were cuddling on the hammock together and my heart just about exploded 🥹💗💗 my arrival woke them up and they eagerly met me at the door. We went straight to snack time and the boys ran along and Simon went right up onto my lap and I gave them both some yummy treats. They both followed me into the kitchen and started working on their kibble very soon after I got that all served. I gave them a fresh bowl of water and then headed downstairs to scoop out the litter box.

We had a cozy time together hanging out near the couch. Bez would entertain me with his playfulness for a bit and then would follow Simon into the kitchen where they both would nibble on their food some more. It was a calm relaxing visit and I said my goodbyes as they were feasting away. Before I left I made sure to lock things up and the alarm is all set. Your mail from today is on your kitchen table. See these cutie pies again tomorrow 💕💕

Love notes and adventures from our pal Kayla ❤️

Harper and Miley greeted me with the sweetest little hellos and wiggles today 💓 Miley had a piece of paper in her mouth that she must’ve grabbed from a shelf nearby before I entered and practically handed it to me as a gift before I asked her to drop it for treats which she did. It had a sweet note in front 🍅 ❤️and I put that up in the shelf. I have the girls some pets and geared them up and we headed out.

I had every intention on bringing them up through the trails but when I arrived I was informed by another trail hiker that there was a man exposing himself there and the sheriffs were coming so we decided to avoid that area entirely today and took to walking through the neighborhood instead. The golden girlies and I had a great time strolling around and they both kept a pretty decent pace, although stopping to take in some smells of course. We passed by some ladies on the street and they just had the best compliments to give to the girls 💓 I gave them some treats along the way and both girls did their number ones, and Miley a number two.

Back at home I checked their water which was still full and then gave them some good bye treats before I left. It was so great to meet Miley today! Until next time! they are the sweetest! 🥹 - KAYLA

One of our favorite puppers, Rioli, has been having a very hard few weeks. She’s been at Dove Lewis for the past few days getting transfusions and around the clock care.

We are incredibly thankful for all of the staff at DL but an especially big shout out to Dr. Barbra Davis, Dr. Thompson, Dr. Mense, Dr. Ellison, & Dr. McGuire that looked after her. Another big thank you to all the dogs who donated their blood to save our sweet girl.

If you’ve been looking for a sign to give back to your community, seriously consider signing your pup up to donate blood.

Welcome home Riri ❤️ and thank you to everyone at

It’s FOXTAIL SEASON🌾

1. Avoid High-Risk Areas: Stay away from fields, trails, and parks known to have foxtails, especially during peak seasons (late spring to early fall).

2. Use Protective Gear: Equip your dog with protective clothing, such as vests, booties, and face masks designed to shield against foxtails when going on trail adventures.

3. Regular Grooming: Keep your dog’s fur trimmed, particularly around the paws, ears, and belly, to make it harder for foxtails to attach and pe*****te.

4. Inspect After Walks: Thoroughly check your dog’s body after outings, paying special attention to the paws, between the toes, ears, eyes, and nose. Remove any foxtails immediately. This is particularly important for long haired dogs.

5. Maintain Your Yard: Regularly mow and clear your yard of foxtails and other harmful weeds to minimize exposure at home.

6. Training: Teach your dog to avoid tall grasses and stay on clear paths during walks. Foxtails grow all over Portland, so it’s good time to practice your pups heel! #

In our not so humble opinion, Portland is the greatest place on earth to be a dog parent. For Harper, this is her paradise. Forest park is the best spot to cool down and take a break under the bridge before returning to the day at large. If you ever get the chance to stop by, you might find one of us running around like little goblins under the bridge. If you know, you know.

Good afternoon!

Harper and I had an absolutely perfect visit in the sunshine today ❤️☀️ We raced right over to the park, found a good shady spot for me to take cover lol and then played tons and tons and tons of fetch! This might seriously be the most Harps has ever come back and immediately dropped the ball for me to throw over and over again. Eventually, she wanted to take breaks and chew on sticks or get bet rubs. I got some water out for her, and Harper took a few sips and then immediately started to dunk the ball in the bowl 😂 Once it was time to head home, Harps was ready to go cool down. We bumped into Sunny-D, and the pair happily greeted each other and were cute little twins 🥰

I gave Harper some good girl treats and kisses before heading out 💕 - .cats.vibes
