Family Dogs New Life Fosters Promoting rescue and resourcing 🐾💗✨

Sharing again because EVERYONE needs to read this if you are thinking of adopting!!!! Here lately we have more returns coming back and if everyone would think of it this way it could avoid that! We work soooo hard with these dogs and put months of work, foster care, interviews, education to fosters/adopters in and we finally celebrate an adoption…….or do we???? Not usually because seems like lately more are coming back than going out 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

It takes time and patience! No dog deserves to be judged by its first hours, days, even weeks!! It takes time and work!

Adopting a pet? Congrats! You've just picked someone up in your car who isn't great at communicating, just got out of a tough situation, and isn't sure if they trust you yet. Sound familiar? That's because the first three days with a new pet are basically a 72-hour first date.

It's exciting, it's awkward, and it's definitely not the time to start planning your holiday cards or giving them a bubble bath.

No judgment, but some of y'all might need a quick refresher on first-date etiquette. So here's your official guide to early red flags (from you, not them).

🚩 Leaving them unattended like it's no big deal
Imagine showing up to a blind date and immediately getting ditched at a party where you know no one. That's how your pet feels when they're left alone right away.

Bottom line: Don't ghost your new pet. It's day one. Stick close.

🚩 Being too handsy
They're cute. You're smitten. But this isn't the moment for kisses, cuddles, or TikToks with voiceovers. You just met. They don't know your intentions yet.

This isn't a fling; it's the start of something real. Let them come to you. (Consent matters, even in pet parenting.)

🚩 Introducing them to your entire cast of characters
You ever meet someone and they immediately want you to meet their mom? Yikes.

Your pet doesn't need to meet your whole social circle (or animal crew) right away. Let them settle in, one face at a time. Save the group hangs for later.

🚩 Giving them a bath
You wouldn't give someone you just met a bath, and if you would… we don't want to talk about this anymore.

Yes, shelter pets can be a little stinky. But baths are a lot. They're wet, stressful, and weirdly intimate for a pet who doesn't even know your hobbies yet. Spritz some pet-safe essential oils around the house and give them time to decompress before sudsing them up.

🚩 Taking them on a spontaneous adventure
You are not on The Bachelor. No one wants a surprise helicopter ride on day one.

Keep things calm and close to home. No breweries, dog parks, or road trips. Your pet's just trying to figure out which room has the snacks, don't make them learn a whole new location yet.

🚩 Expecting instant love
Some folks swipe right, go on one date, and expect sparks to fly immediately. The same energy applies to new pet parents who expect instant attachment.

Sometimes it does happen, but more often, it's a slow burn. They might hide under the bed, bark at the fridge, or side-eye you for three days straight. It doesn't mean it's not working. It just means you're still getting to know each other.

💘 The Bottom Line: Love doesn't always strike like lightning. Sometimes, it starts with awkward silences, side-eyes, and mutually agreeing that you won't make any sudden moves. But give it time, stay patient, and keep showing up, and you just might find yourself in the best relationship of your life.

What a cute heartening encounter! I ran into foster alum Little Man on a neighborhood walk today. Little Man came into our foster program in 2021 and found his person. Huge thanks to for saying yes to fostering, the whole team at & for providing transport! And bestest of all for giving Little Man a big beautiful life!
He was from who could really use support & shares as these days the lists are long and unforgiving especially before the 4th of July when shelters are overwhelmed.

📣BE AWARE AND BE FAIR

As temperatures rise it’s important to remind everybody that walking our dogs in the heat of the day can put our dogs at extreme risk of heat stroke and can also cause severe damage to their paw pads.

get up early to take them out or try to go to natural wooded areas with plenty of shade and access to water.

Happy Friday Everybody! Pupdate from Foster Alum Becca! Becca (formerly Bekke)came from the high intake shelter in Stanislaus County California where she was on the euthanasia list.
Thanks to for saying yes to fostering she was able to travel up to Portland and find her forever family!
From her adopted family- “She really is just such a happy chilaxed girl. Also, our friends adopted Stewie from Family Dogs and they are now BEST BUDs”
Without the incredible work of team and so many others this perfect little lady would not be here today. Please consider following and sharing the pups from so they can get seen and saved.
Please consider fostering, even if you can only do a few days, it can make a world of difference for a dog. If you have any questions about fostering don’t hesitate to reach out! We can help connect you with a rescue. 🌎🐾💚✨

PLEASE! Consider adopting or fostering this amazing girl, Zoe!

Zoe is almost 2 years old. She is a complete sweetheart...loves everyone, loves kids, and loves to play with other dogs that are friendly and energetic like her! Zoe also loves to chill in the house, hang out, and cuddle! There is nothing bad to say about Zoe! She's WONDERFUL!! (okay, so no cats for Zoe, as she does want to chase them...but seriously, that's just the way it is sometimes!)

And yes, she smiles!! A LOT!

PLEASE consider fostering or adopting this amazing girl! Submit an application here:

Reminder to beach walkers & dog guardians-if you find a stranded or deceased marine animal DO NOT let your dog interact or touch them. We came across a deceased elephant seal and reported it to the stranded hotline. While we were leaving we observed people letting their dog near it and we saw a man touch it!
Seals can carry potentially dangerous viruses and diseases including leptospirosis. Dogs can contract it through sniffing or licking dead seals.
To report a live or dead stranded
marine mammal, call:

Nate and his pups need our support!
Nate adopted Missy, and then Wilbur, about 6 years ago from the Family Dogs Foster program.
Missy has a fast growing tumor that needs to be removed, Nate would like to get her in for care ASAP. If you can share Nate’s story and donate we would do appreciate it. Thanks to for helping Nate take such good care of his pups.
From Nate
“My dog Missymouse Bull has breast cancer, diagnosed yesterday. Doctor said it’s a 50/50 percent chance it’s malignant, but she didn’t want to biopsy it In the fears that the body would feel it’s being attacked, and the tumor would grow more aggressive. She said it just needs to be removed. Im houseless & we live in a tent. Im trying what I can for the removal to be as cheap as possible, but even on a list it’s gonna be expansive. I’d really appreciate it if people would donate and especially share. Our lives have been nothing but bad luck for the past twelve months, and my dog does not deserve this.”
