Chinook Rescue

Chinook Rescue Chinook Rescue is dedicated to providing a safe and secure home to Chinooks and Chinook cross breeds Chinooks are an extremely rare heritage sled dog.

With as few as 8 breedable dogs in the 1980s, they were listed by the Guinness World Records as being the "rarest' breed of dog. Currently with upwards of 1200 Chinooks world wide and a network of extremely focused breeders, it is thankfully very rare that a Chinook would require being rescued, but for those difficult times when it is needed, we are here to help keep those dogs in the Chinook community.

Chinook Rescue has been informed of an adult Chinook in need of a new forever home!
CH β€˜PR’ Spook Nook Kala is a gorgeous black and tan girl with demonstrated athletic ability. She is both UKC and AKC registered and has earned coursing awards: CA (Coursing Ability); CAA (Coursing Ability Advanced); and is one Qualifying run away from CA Excellent
Kala just turned 8 in October and is currently in NJ. Kala is being rehomed because she is not able to get along with her canine housemate. While she has shown absolutely no aggression towards people and no aggression towards other dogs, she has become aggressive towards the other family dog. This issue did not start until she had a litter of puppies, and it is felt to be related to maternal instinct that was exacerbated by hormonal changes after her spay procedure.
We are seeking a home where Kala is the only dog. Also, she has a high prey drive so she will be best served in a home that does not cats. She adores children, but would prefer a home without children under 10.
Kala wants everyone to know that she is a good girl who has never actually injured her canine housemate, she just simply wants to remind the pesky dog that she is the boss. And she is the best behaved girl ever when she is out and about on a leash.
If you are ready to enter into that special relationship that results from bonding with a mature girl who has already overcome all of those annoying puppy issues (house training/chewing/obedience) then Kala is your girl!
If you are interested in adopting Kala please contact Jean Bouteiller at 860-671-1313 or Brenda Dean at 207-344-7996

**UPDATE**

Thanks to the collective efforts of probably a dozen people, Adjo is settling into his new home. Thank you to everyone who offered help and hope. The Chinook community is a special place.
____________________________________________

Callicoon Adjo is looking for a forever home. His owner passed away recently, and although arrangements had been made for him to go to a terrific home, living with small children is not a good match for him.

Adjo is 10 years old, and turning 11 at the end of December. He was deeply treasured by his original owner. He is sweet, funny, opinionated, and a good cuddler. He will need a quiet home with lots of love and doting from his new human(s). He has lived with another Chinook for several years, but it's not clear how he will do with unfamiliar dogs. Cats are also an unknown. No small children.

He does have mild to moderate hip dysplasia, so lots of stairs would not be optimal.

If you'd like to learn more about Adjo, please message me here or email [email protected].

He is open for placement immediately, but there are some folks that have offered to short-term foster if necessary.

ADULT CHINOOK MIX AVAILABLE.

Takoda is an active 3 year old Chinook x Tamaskan dog. He is house-trained, knows many commands, and has completed the requirements for a Novice Pack Dog title. He LOVES to be with his people and to work, whatever form β€œwork” takes.

He is good with other dogs and cats and must have a home without children, ideally a home with experience with sensitive dogs. While great with his family kids, young children and some strangers make him anxious. The right home will be committed to keeping Takoda separate from the things that make him anxious. He has very clear signals when he is feeling overwhelmed, and absolutely loves having his crate open to go to and rest up at these times. He is currently located in Minnesota but transport can be worked out to the right home.

Takoda is intact but can be neutered. He will be placed at no charge in the right home. He is currently located in Minnesota but transport can be worked out.

Please email [email protected] for more information.

Metolius Chinooks

***UPDATE 7/2***
On Tuesday, 6/30, Tucker's owner called me and stated the incredibly concerning and worrisome behaviors she had originally reported to the breeder who placed Tucker, and then separately to me, were not as bad or concerning as she had first told us, and that she had decided not to rehome him.

From the very beginning when we were notified of the request from the owner to rehome him, our only concern has been for the well-being of Tucker and his family, and that remains the same today. We want to thank everyone for all of the love and offers of help for Tucker! We hope you will continue sending him good thoughts! πŸ•β€πŸ¦ΊπŸ’•

‐‐-----------------------------------------

URGENT HELP NEEDED--UPDATING TO ADD HE IS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Tucker, one of the pups from our Hamilton litter, needs to be rehomed ASAP. His current home has undergone a lot of recent changes and he is not handling the stress well at all. His owner stated that he is reacting towards people he doesn't know well, or those he feels are a threat to him, but he has been evaluated and she was told this is fear-based not aggression-based behavior. We do not know if this behavior would stop in a different environment or not, but he will need a patient home who is DEDICATED to training with a trainer who understands reactive dogs. I have not seen Tucker since he went home with his owner so I cannot comment on his behavior personally.

He was born 11/6/18 (he'll be 1 year and 8 months old on 7/6), he is neutered but did sire a litter of mix breed puppies through an unplanned breeding.

If you are interested, please contact myself or Tucker's co-owner, Leslie at Granite Hill Chinooks.

Not to over react, but in these times perhaps this site could be useful instead of quiet.

If you find yourself in need of dog care due to being sick, PM me and I will help search. Please provide all the basic details about the dog(s) and location.

Wachusett Chinooks

Wachusett Chinooks

A pup from the Wachusett Chinooks Viking litter is in need of a new home. Toby is almost 5 years old, is intact for breeding and a wonderful handsome boy. His current family has had some health issues which have nade it too hard for them to keep Toby in control and themselves safe. He needs a home which will be loving, but use a firm, patient hand to retrain and reinforce the good manners he has forgotten. He otherwise has a great temperament, is great with children and has been shown in UKC and AKC without problem. A home with either no other dogs or one of the opposite s*x is what is being looked for. It is necessary to not only have Toby find his forever home, but also keep him intact for breeding. He has Excellent hips, normal eyes and is very healthy. If you are seriously interested, please contact Amanda Bays at [email protected] or myself at [email protected]

Callicoon Chinooks

EDITED POST - We have found a great placement for Arya. A huge thank you to everyone who stepped up with offers to help. The Chinook Community is an incredible group of people.

ADULT CHINOOK AVAILABLE: Callicoon Arya, one of Madeline's puppies with Bashaba Murphy, is a six-year-old spayed female Chinook that is looking for the right new home. Her current family is relocating to Europe and is unfortunately unable to take her with them.

Arya is a loving family companion, that gets on well with dogs in the extended family and older kids. She is excited to meet new people and has spent the bulk of her time quietly with her nuclear family. She's had little exposure to younger kids.

Arya is healthy but has been diagnosed with mild hip dysplasia. Keeping her lean, active and on joint supplements is likely to keep her healthy well into her senior years.

She is currently in Texas, and travel options can be worked out.

Message me, or send an email to [email protected] if you are interested in learning more.

Microchipping of Animals FAQ

A microchip might not prevent your dog from getting lost, but it will exponentially increase the odds of him or her finding their way home. If you have concerns about the safety of the chipping, check with your dog's breeder and your vet.

Questions/answers about microchipping: What is a microchip? How is it implanted? Is it painful to animals? Can it really help reunite you with a lost pet?

And now for some good news!

Rain's foster family has decided to provide her with her forever home. She's getting along wonderfully with her two adopted Chinook siblings. Rain is on the portly side, but otherwise received a clean bill of health from her new vet, and she's already lost 6 pounds!

Balanced Life K9 Training

There's always warning signals - we just need to know what they are.

We often hear: There were no warning signs, it came out of nowhere, the other dog was just trying to play ... then the dog just attacked.

There are so many layers to communication, body language, social etiquette and socialization with dogs that are not carefully monitored enough by people.

To provide an example of an overly friendly dog I let Sheena pester Elke the German Shepherd for a few extra minutes and get on her nerves (this is not something we generally allow). Even after being corrected, if I had not stepped in to help reinforce, Sheena was immediately ready to go right back to pushing Elke's buttons.

Often times we see not as friendly or neutral dogs blamed for "starting" something with a puppy or younger dog when they we just trying to play πŸ™„πŸ‘Ž!

More often than not it is the playful pups behavior that causes the conflict!

Too often people will bring dogs together and just let them work it out on their own and things go south quickly. Or allow the friendly dog to pester and push buttons unrelentingly. Dog parks, dog daycare, play dates, family visits / gatherings, bringing a new dog or puppy into the home, etc etc.

Dogs can quickly go from tolerating to becoming defensive/offensive when they realize no one else will help curb the unwanted, pushy behavior of the friendly dog 🐢.

We will sometimes allow a dog to correct or be corrected, but a majority of the time I step in to take control and responsibility so that all the dogs understand I will help. I don't want neutral dogs to feel like they have to correct, correct, correct and will be allowed to act as other dogs punching bags or fearful dogs to be bullied into self defense and over reacting.

Especially this holiday season when families will be getting together to celebrate (and perhaps including canine companions) it is important to take responsibility and help neutralize pushy behavior so our dogs don't have to play sheriff.

Help break up potential conflicts and DONT just let them work it out.

Must Love Dogs - Trailer F1

It's a testament to the Chinook community how quiet this page has been.

We have a pretty in-depth questionnaire that we ask all potential foster and rescue homes to fill out, but there's one requirement that weighs more than all the others... "Must Love Dogs..." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Yzk_TTBcmw

Must Love Dogs tells the story of Sarah Nolan (Diane Lane), a newly divorced woman cautiously rediscovering romance with the enthusiastic but often misguided...
