Deacon
You will almost always find within my arena a few circles, or figure 8s that I have ridden repeatedly. I’m asking for a bend in the body (soft curvature from poll to tail), easy cues, and no cheating on the circle pattern. Some horses come by this exercise easily, as did Deacon’s mother and grandmother, who I have posted some of their exercises before. But for Deacon, it takes patience and repetition. You can see my inner leg corrections through the bobbing of his head, as he two steps back into the pattern and finds his curve again. I’d like his head to be a little lower, but I am riding on a very soft rein.
This isn’t nonsense training or play time pretending we are something fancy. I’ve found this exercise, which I often have a barrel or tub in the center to eye my distance by, teaches a horse to find its right path, “listen” to your leg, and not over react to the rein. I try to set my rein to how I want my circle to go, and allow my leg to keep them there- if needed. Deacon does ok. Not great, not terrible, but ok. I know it’s partly my fault as my right leg was much weaker than my left leg during the most of his younger years. Even now, my right leg pressure isn’t as good as the left. I used to school mine, and other’s horses daily. Now it’s hit and miss. I’m never finished training or schooling a horse. Each ride is a lesson. I just discover what’s needed that day, or needs repeated from one before.
Deacon is the slowest horse I’ve ever trained- I’ve truly just taken my time. But as slowly as Jubilee’s training is going, he needn’t feel bad about it 😄
Deacon in the arena today.
Vid3/3. I brought a few things in to give Deacon some things to think about. The pole by the fence has pool noodles on it (he doesn’t care). I made a small jump for him up there also. It’s hard to see but there are poles laying in an “L” that I’m side passing over. He has to move his hind end over to complete them. And some collected loping. Nothing fancy, I just needed to ride today and wasn’t content with plain arena riding. I have a lot of obstacles outside the arena too. Deacon is a horse who gets bored with the “same ol’ schooling,” so it helps to make things a challenge, unusual, or give him something different to look at. This isn’t to show how good he is- he’s far from that 😂 but an example of easy ways to mix things up when you can’t get out and ride other places. I played with him a good hour or so doing different things with him, then rode around the hayfield and woods behind it. See the other videos below!
Deacon backing around obstacles
Vid 2/3 Giving Deacon some challenges. I’ve not asked him to back around things in a while. We did this many times, he loosens up with practice. Backing a horse doesn’t always need to be straight back- find out how easily your horse moves around, turns, while backing! The side passes were just an extra 😉 Deacon is a horse who gets bored with the “same ol’ schooling,” so it helps to make things a challenge, unusual, or give him something different to look at. Deacon- neck reining exercises.
Vid 1/3. I find different ways to break up schooling with my horses. This one is giving Deacon something to focus on with neckreining. My pretty Jubilee today.

It was a beautiful day to be riding Deacon in the woods. Never turn away a chance to jump!

My afternoon on Deacon.
Horses & Ball
Desensitizing horses in a fun way. I made this in 2011!
Deacon
🏴☠️🏇🏻 Yes, you can laugh at my makeshift “t-shirt flag.”😄 I use things that won’t ruin in arena dirt. Deacon seems tolerant enough, we’ve never carried a full size flag though. But look at that stop! He managed that a few times today with chunky Renegade boots on! Good boy Deacon!
Deacon
I took Deacon out on the 7 mile loop up from our place this evening. He was a bit frisky at the start, but settled in for the long haul in no time. I don’t know what he’s calling this little gait he created, but it was a cute tippity-tap sitting trot that was fine with me! 🏇🏻😂

Evening ride
I needed some ride time to make my day complete. Deacon obliged me with a little bareback trotting. He’s my good goober.
My arena still needs groomed. We’ll get there- it’s still soft.

Oh Dixie- you don’t know the danger lurking!
