We had a fantastic time at Broken Circle Ranch's Dog Days of Summer trial! I ran Doc and Daisy in the novice class, which was a great experience. The obstacles were challenging and very well thought out. We will be back for sure! Doc took first place on day one, and Daisy took third. We took fourth and fifth on the following day! We look forward to many more trials in the future!
It was a great time with wonderful friends and a great time to make new friends!
And a huge shoutout to Norm and Vickie Close for all of their guidance and friendship!!!!

Nothing is more gut wrenching then watching a dog go from moving smooth to limping. Thankfully Subie is healing up good from what seems to be a slight muscle injury. But it makes you think about how much you would loose if that dog was hurt for a long periodof time. It's great to look ahead at all the exciting stuff ahead. But sometimes it's important to just sit with those good dogs and realize how much you may take for granted. She's a great dog and I'm privileged to work with her. Hoping for a speedy and well lasting recovery!

Recently we made a silly, short, but fun video of Reba and some tricks she does all to some music. It has now got over 900,000 views. While we really appreciate the enjoyment people have got from the video, this is the kind of content that we are shooting for, footage of our dogs showing the training we have done so far and the natural talents that they all posess.

My first trial is in the books! Daisy, Doc and I competed in our first USBCHA sheepdog trial at Fidos Farm. It was an AWESOME experience!! We got to watch some of the best handlers and dogs in the world run the open course, which was awe inspiring. The trial was so well done, and the people were so kind, helpful and efficient that the whole experience was just amazing. Doc and I placed first in the novice class, Daisy and I placed 4th in the novice class, while in Ranch class, I placed 2nd with Daisy and 4th with Doc.
The weekend was full of learning from greats, and laughter with best friends.
It showed me just how far we have come, and how much further we have to go!

A long day of fencing and shenanigans with the dogs. Of course I had to use subie to put the sheep in the upcoming pasture and let them graze for a little while. Even if we don't have wire up yet!

I remember back to being a young boy in the back of a mini van on the highway heading to my grandfathers ranch for summer break. I always looked out the window as we got more and more into the farming country hoping to see a man working some livestock with his dog. I thought that was the height of life and to see it would be a dream come true.

Now in life I live on that ranch working under my grandfather learning all I can from him while getting to work my dogs on livestock. I'm a long ways off from that highway but I'm right where I want to be doing the things I only hoped for a glimpse of!

Thanks to creative lighting and phenomenal camera work I can show the late night watering job! Some times working full time jobs and ranching means chores in the dark. Often just ranching involves chores in the dark. But with the help of a good dog and some creative thinking the job is easier! It sure beats carrying buckets of water over and dumping them by hand!

S0ID
Hey folks, we live in Potlatch Idaho and raise and train herding dogs for ranch and herding work! We have this nice male, Kit, that has come available. He is an ABCA registered Border Collie, and would thrive in a small farm setting. He has nice outruns, know his flanks, rates nicely and has good presence with livestock.
If you have any questions you can message me or my wife Ellen Mather.

"You can spend thousands of dollars or hundreds of hours but what's it all worth if the dog won't hold a gate for you? "

Doc is always out and about for chores and I've been taking time to make sure subie is too lately. Either one is more than capable of keeping these sheep off the feed and gate while I come and go. I truly feel it's a key thing that lots of folks leave out in training, working with out really doing to much means so much more for the calm confident capabilities of a stock dog. I want cool level headed dogs that have the ability for speed and power if needed. Often people are looking for wild out of control dogs becuase they mistake it for strength. But strength is shown very clearly by them laying there and holding while even the nastier stock keeps its distance

LONG POST WARNING BUT PLEASE STICK IT OUT.

I had the opportunity to work over at Norman Close and Vickie Close yesterday. Two things became very clear early on. The first thing was the exceptional talent they both have with not only working dogs, but also analyzing dogs and handlers to help build up for a better outcome. The second was their willingness to help work and educate admist a busy schedule.

While there Norm helped us put a good work on a young dog who is fast and has done a good job getting the better of me. Also in our time there Vickie picked up one of my dogs and worked a ram single (to get him out of the way so we could work younger dogs) as if she and the dog had been working for years togother. I also got to witness their ability with some of there dogs as well. Something that I have seen many times at this point but it never ceases to keep me hooked as if it's my first time watching a master in their craft.

All this is a precursor to what I really want to share. While I was at their facilities Norm and Vickie both helped me recognize some bad habits I was pushing onto a dog as well as the things I was doing that made the dogs behavior take place in the first place.

Now today while at work I was sharing what I do with dogs like I do with many people I see. It sparked the interest of a customer and he asked me about habit forming in a dog and any advice I had to help break his dog of the habit of rushing through his door way at home.

I gave him this metaphor born of last night's work and my contemplation of it. If you start your car 50 times successfuly and the 51st time it doesn't start do you blame it on the car or your inability to start the car. Many people of course blame the car. But often we are starting the car in a manor that isnt good for it which cuases issues as time progresses. I told him that presenting the opportunity for the dog to get out and continuing to do so for a while now has allowed the dog to assume its normal behavior just like we would assume it's normal to start the car. We as handlers and dog owners often don't realize we have been starting the car wrong until we cuase damage i.e. bad habits. Sometimes it takes someone who knows about dogs or cars to show us the right way to start them so that we don't cuase problems in the future. Often its little things that are hard to catch outselves doing or just simply dont see the connection. This requires humbling our selves enough to learn from others.

We all should be learning anyone who doesn't think they have anything to learn is stuck in a position that only opening up to new ideas can get your through. It's great to have Norm and Vickie as friends and mentors to help us learn along the way. There are many sources out there to learn from but it is a blessing to have someone who has explored lots of resources already and is willing to share their knowledge and experience with you! So thank you Farm Diggity for all you have taught us and continue to teach us all the time.

This lady and her dogs! It's amazing to see what we are getting done slowly but surely on the ranch! But I can honestly say very little would get down with out Ellen at the helm! She keeps us moving, on task and motivated all at the same time! From putting day to day works on the dogs to moving livestock where they need to be be and so much more Ellen is there to get it done with almost always a smile on her face! Even a couple weeks without hot water couldn't stop this dynamo of a Gal from a cheerful attitude and progress in our work!
