Looking for a college to ride at?! This is good information!!

BY Helen Chimbos Have you considered riding in college but don’t know where to start? Many young equestrians aspire to continue their riding journey into college but are unsure how to. As a trainer, it’s my job to find the right horse and prepare it properly to walk in to the equitation ring.

We work hours and hours on adjusting the stride, teaching the horse to balance correctly and not hyper focusing on one distance. I teach my riders to find the right rhythm for the horse they are on. Then it flows without stress in the horse or rider.

With balance and adjustability any jump can be “found.”

There’s nothing better than a fabulous equitation horse.

Welcome to Trainer Tuesday! Each week we ask trainers a question and gather their answers for you. These trainers have a range of experience, backgrounds, and focus points of their programs, so the answers have as much variation as you would expect and also probably much more similarity.  This week...

You drive to the edge of town, pass the fast-food line and pull up to the dumpster. Many prayers over that dumpster--prayers that it is unlocked and the food is on top. You walk through the woods to the bridge. Slide down the embankment. Red mud on your pants. Walk to the end of the tracks and hope no train comes and you're not spotted by the Railroad. Look for the small hole in the fence. Crawl through to the other side. Down the hill and over the creek. Camoflauged you find the tent. This is the place no one wants to end up. This is where we find our friends. To know the pain, you have to get close. It means going where nobody dares or cares or even knows to look. Love requires proximity. And love compells us to the otherside of the tracks. That is where we find our humanity. That is where we get our hearts back. We need each other. And so we go the extra mile for our friends.

I think this is important information. This sport is a lot of time and money. You should be enjoying it. Your barn should have common goals, expertise in what they are teaching you, rates that you can afford, care that you are happy with, and professionalism.

BY DANA SPRINGER Trainers are the cornerstone of amateur riding (besides horses of course). They make you feel confident, safe, empowered and give you the skills to succeed as an equestrian. But sometimes we outgrow our trainers and need to move on. Over the course of my 25-year riding career, I’v...

There’s nothing better than a good TB!
Teach your students to ride a TB, and you’ve taught them not only how to ride and excellent horsemanship, but you’ve taught them a lot about life too!! TB’s rock!!

When Myra Utterback purchased off-the-track Thoroughbred Deceiving in November 2022, she wasn’t imagining she’d be competing in this year’s Hamel Foundation NHS 3’3″ Equitation Championship. But less than two years after the horse came off the track, the pair put in a solid round at the Na...

Appreciation post for this 22 year old. He’s looking gorgeous and doing great. We’re still keeping him going under saddle. His patience helped my daughter through the ranks from 3ft medals to 3’6 at capital challenge, Hunterdon Cup, and Harrisburg. If anyone’s got a child that rides, you know honest and safe horses are priceless!!! We owe him the best life and that’s what he’s getting! Forever. Winninton.

Daphne Boogaard

Daphne offers almost 30 years of classic hunter and equitation training of horse and rider.

Her story:

Daphne parents were active members of the Potomac Hunt, in Potomac Maryland. Her mom comes from a long line of classic horseman that showed and won ribbons in prestigious New England shows such as Hampton Classic and The National horse show at Madison square garden. Her dad was an avid horseman with a classic “cowboy” approach to most things that had to do with horses and training. Daphne rode in pony club growing up and lessoned with local trainers. Later, she seeked instruction from some of the best. JT Tallon, Joe Fargis, Emmie Prettyman and even rode in clinics with George Morris and received her USHJA trainer certification while auditing Morris clinics.

After gradating from University of Maryland, Tulip Pond Farm was established in 1996 on the family farm. She received a degree in sociology from the University of Maryland, where she also rode in the IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association). TPF was named after the original location on Tulip Lane in Potomac Maryland. It also had a pond on the property, and it is ongoing reminder of her fathers Dutch origin and the love of tulips. She trained many horse/rider teams through local championships.
