Soooo story time….mid last to late last month I told Gracyn that we needed to ease up on the amount of food we were feeding Cannoli because I thought she was getting a little chunky. Then on the 19th I noticed she was drinking a lot of water but just made a mental note to monitor that. On the 20th we got home from work and got the kids from school and G took Cannoli out to potty on the leash as usual because she can’t go out in the back yard fenced area with the other dogs cause she doesn’t like Ember and she has to be leashed in the front yard because she will try to chase down a chicken and eat it if given the chance so my point is she’s always monitored. G comes back in with her and Cannoli rolls over for belly rubs and I notice a ton of discharge around her v***a. Immediately my brain put everything together with the swollen belly, drinking a lot and the discharge, I thought oh crap she’s got a pyometra. For those of you who don’t know what that is it’s a serious infection in the uterus, usually treated by spaying the dog otherwise it can be deadly. I immediately called the vet and they said bring her in. The whole way there I’m freaking out and saying that I’m not ready to spay her but I want her safe and I don’t want to spend thousands of dollars trying to treat it for it not to work and then have to spay her anyways…you know how it is, always playing worst case scenario in your mind. I get there (and let me preface this with I love my vet clinic and the doctors there and I love how candid and down to earth Dr. Webb always is, she cracks me up every time!), she checks her and says “yep that’s alot of t**t snot”. So we start discussing if we are going to spay her or take some other route and she said let me just go xray her to see how serious we are talking before we get ahead of ourselves and make anymore decisions. She comes back in the room and says “well it’s not a pyo, she’s just a hoe”. I said “are you effing kidding me?” She said “I’m not effing kidding you” to which I replied with my head in my hands “Jesus Christ” 🤦🏻‍♀️. She said “nope he’s definitely not in there but there are 5-6 babies in there”. She believed that she was on about day 52-53. I was so relieved that she wasn’t sick but also not thrilled that she was pregnant this soon after having her last litter. Last time she was bred I we tried to let Crumpet breed her naturally and he just could not make it happen so I had to step in and collect him and AI her myself to make that litter of puppies happen. This time when she came in season I said we were not going to breed her and she kept her diaper on the whole time except when she went out on the leash to potty with Gracyn and then the diaper went right back on. The only male dog that was anywhere near her was Crumpet but again with the circumstances being what they were last time and him not being able to get the job done I wasn’t overly concerned with him being around not to mention that Cannoli stays in Gracyn’s room with her 99% of the time. Well as they said in the Jurassic Park movie, “nature always finds a way”. I told Gracyn let this be a lesson to her that it only takes two seconds and you don’t even have to take all your clothes off to end up pregnant! Anyways with all that being said on Tuesday evening we were blessed with the “potato toppings” litter, we just thought it was the most appropriate theme following on the heels of the recent previous potato litter.….please welcome Butter, Sour Cream, Chives, Bacon Bit and Cheddar. Cannoli is healthy and happy with her little hoe self and babies are doing good.
