At Ruff Start Rescue, we’re all about pets AND people, and today, we want to give a huge shoutout to our incredible volunteers from PHASE-Industries! 💙

Every week, this amazing crew comes in to help us. They spend time snuggling with our cats, offering social enrichment, and helping our less-social cats get used to human interaction. Sometimes, they even read to them to help them get comfortable with human voices! They also assist with preparing for transports, organizing donations, and tackling various projects around the office. They are the first to step in and offer help when we need it and their hard work and dedication truly make a difference here!

Crystal, a PHASE staff member, shared this beautiful insight: “You have said that the rescue also helps people, and this is true. This is their highlight of the week on Wednesdays. It gives them a sense of purpose and that they are part of the rescue in organizing, sorting, putting away loads of pet food, and making adoption folders. They are so proud when they get back to our site and tell their peers what they did. As for the cat cuddles, they just think they are playing with them and I explain how they are helping them. The rescue has brought a sense of purpose and belonging to those that unfortunately many people see as ‘different.’”

Basil wants to be your future festive companion! 🐭

While most mice are busy nibbling on holiday treats, Basil’s favorite pastime is running on her wheel, full of energy.

Basil’s journey started with a tough beginning—she was originally raised to be a feeder mouse until her kind owner saved her from becoming a reptile’s dinner. Things took another turn when Basil began having scuffles with her housemate. (If you ask Basil, she’ll insist the other mouse started it!) But don’t let her past fool you—so far, the only traits Basil has shown in foster care are a sweet shyness mixed with endless curiosity.

When Casper first came to Ruff Start Rescue at the end of October, he was in rough shape. Emaciated, covered in lacerations, and in need of stitches, it was clear he had been through a lot. But thanks to the care and support of his amazing foster, our team, and donors, this sweet boy has had a remarkable transformation.

Now, just a few weeks later, Casper is thriving in his adoptive home. He's settling in wonderfully with his new canine companion, Buttercup, who just so happens to look just like him! Casper is showered with love, treats, toys, and plenty of snuggles from his new family and their extended loved ones.

This Thanksgiving, Casper celebrated with his new family, including his dog cousins, and had an absolute blast. His family couldn’t be more grateful to have him as part of their lives. He’s already deeply loved and cherished, and we couldn't be happier for him.

Thank you to everyone who made Casper's journey possible and continues to support animals like him! ❤️

At just 11 weeks old, Munchkin was already fighting for his life. 😿

Last Friday, this sweet little farm kitten was brought to a local clinic with a severe case of re**al prolapse. In urgent need of care, the clinic reached out to us, hoping we could save him. Of course, we didn’t hesitate for a second to step in and give him the chance he deserves.

Re**al prolapse, often caused by chronic diarrhea, can be extremely painful and dangerous if not treated quickly. Without medical intervention, Munchkin’s life was at risk. Thankfully, the clinic is stepping in to perform the urgent surgery he needs today, which will involve repairing the prolapse and likely neutering him while he’s under anesthesia.

Munchkin has had a rough start, but he’s showing signs of being a sweet and friendly kitten. He stayed at the clinic over the weekend, arriving matted in f***s and understandably a bit rough around the edges. Despite his condition, the clinic staff has reported that he’s gentle and loving—a true fighter.

Munchkin’s surgery is expected to be around $500, and your support today will make a world of difference in giving Munchkin the chance to have a future full of love and care. 💕

"Fisher joined us for our family pictures and I am in love with this one! He is such an important part of our family ❤️ 🐾 Our girls were so young when we adopted him in 2018 and now one is graduated and in college and the other is a junior. Fisher has been with them through the pandemic, lots of camping, building two homes, the grief of losing a best friend tragically, and so much more. And he has stayed by their side. While he's still a pup (6 1/2), the thought of a life without him someday brings me to tears. Here's to many, many more years with Mr. Sweet Face 💙🐾"

As Give to the Max Day comes to a close, I hope you share the same sense of gratitude and accomplishment that I feel. From the bottom of my heart, I cannot thank you enough for your overwhelming support of Ruff Start Rescue on Minnesota's annual giving holiday. Ruff Start's goal for this year was to raise $225,000. We knew this was not a small undertaking, but we also knew this amount would allow us to expand our programs and reach throughout Central Minnesota and beyond. Because of you and our incredible network of supporters, we have surpassed that goal and raised $267,350.09! Not only has this been the largest amount raised on Give to the Max Day for Ruff Start Rescue, but it will also demonstrate the largest impact! We broke ground on the 1,200-square-foot building addition at the Ruff Start office on November 8, 2024. With this additional space comes the opportunity for additional animals to be spayed/neutered, additional people reached through our education program, and even more resources and supplies shared with community members. As Ruff Start Rescue and the entire animal welfare community face companion animal overpopulation, veterinary staffing shortages, and a drastic increase of owners surrendering their pets, there is no better time to increase our programs and services. Because of your generosity, we can do just that. The Ruff Start Rescue community runs deep. Our donors, volunteers, fosters, and staff all hold the same passion for companion animal welfare, and this Give to the Max Day has once again proven that. Our Rescue Story

Hope’s days were numbered in an overcrowded Ohio shelter in January 2010. The pit bull mix was suffering—emaciated and suffering with heartworm. Azure was no stranger to helping animals in need. She spent her childhood growing up on 50 acres and saving animals of all shapes and sizes, including cats, dogs, squirrels, raccoons, and birds. So when Hope’s picture with her final plea for a home popped up on Azure’s Facebook timeline, she didn’t hesitate to help. The 23-year-old told the shelter she would take Hope as part of a newly developing rescue in her hometown in central Minnesota.

Swiftly, she arranged ground transportation from Ohio to Illinois where a volunteer pilot and his wife from Pilots N Paws waited for Hope’s arrival. The couple flew Hope and another rescue dog directly to the Princeton, MN, airport. Once the plane touched down, Ruff Start Rescue had officially taken in its first rescue dog. True to her nature, Hope was in good spirits. She was placed with a wonderful foster family that was able to give her some much-deserved love, attention, and care. Unsurprisingly, Hope won over her foster family and was adopted by them. And so began Ruff Start Rescue.

Hope was the first companion animal rescued by Ruff Start Rescue since its foundation and the gateway to a career for Azure, who still acts as the rescue’s president and executive director. Ruff Start is a figurehead of the central Minnesota animal welfare community and has served as the Princeton area’s sole non-profit 501c3 animal rescue organization since July 2010.
