My youngsters on top of the world yesterday š«¶
I decided to go on a hike with my 4 year olds because we all had the zoomies. We ended up hiking all the way up the hill and then circling around through a different pasture to get back to the barn due to mud, our total distance being 1.93 miles. We also gained 400ft of elevation at the top of the hill, so while it was only a couple miles, it was a bit of a feat, especially for out of shape and not athletic me.
Yesterday on our hike they both went through a wire gate for the first time (for sure for Hickory, and as far as I know for Patriot) Patriot was like āwhatever, thereās grass. I like grass.ā Hickory was a little skeptical of the funny noises the wires make, but he went through without an issue.
As we got to the barn, the pasture herd came over, and then took off. I totally thought Hickory would take off with them, but I was wrong. Patriot decided that he should take off with them, hit the end of the lead rope, and then was mad that I would hold on to the lead rope and not let him bolt with the loose herd. Hickory stood in place and was like āwhatās your problem man?ā Young horses are honestly just so funny to work with.
While Patriot has been up the hill before and knew what he was doing, this was Hickoryās first major outing and he was phenomenal. Hickory continues to build his confidence and I am so proud of him. Before our hike, not only did he nap while I was in the pen with him, but when he started waking up, he let me slowly go over to him and eventually pet all over him while he was laying down, which is not only a lot of trust on a horseās part, but I also honestly never expected to have that from him. Heās been so nervous for so long, but yesterday it was like he never had been the level of fearful he started out with. Iām pretty proud of him and this thing heās doing called growing up.
And yes, they both are icky muddy tangled messes, but mud season has no mercy so getting them remotely clean and presentable for more than an hour is nearly impossible.
