My truck is finally in the shop to have the transmission and transfer case rebuilt so I could not attend yesterday's local show in Castle Rock (I miss my local folks) or even better the TRBA Fall Show and Southwest Regional Champagne Specialty Club show just 10 hours away in Killeen, TX (I miss competition). I did however find some fantastic House of Loyd's porcelain Christmas rabbits to add to my collection. I found them at a local thrift shop at an incredible deal. 6 does due today. Morning feed and first time mom TF13 had 8 kits on the wire and 2 in the box with no fur pulled. So this morning's warming was unsuccessful at Resurrection. It's always important to look for blood pool in the nails which can be hard to see in a black rabbit. But also never assume they are dead until they are warm and unresponsive.

We did have a third litter the other night. Two of these are not the same! I am personally a breed hard, cull harder kind of gal. But it is a well known fact that many top breeders and respected judges have and will cross breed to achieve certain goals in their herds. A great example of why line breeding is important.

There once was a girl
Won some ribbons of blue;
Came home from the Fair
With a big trophy too.
With a voice glad and proud
She said to her Mom,
“’Tis the very best year
That I’ve ever had now”!

Said her very wise Mom,
“Daughter, I’d like to hear,
Why you think that this was
Such a very fine year.”
“Why, Mom, you well know
All the prizes I’ve won;
How I’ve come out on top
In most things I’ve done.

Just look at the ribbons
That hang on my wall,
And think of the money
I’ve made since last fall
From premium checks
And a big auction price.
You can’t help but think
Cash and ribbons are nice.”

But the woman said, “My girl,
You’re not thinking right.
Blue ribbons, ’tis true
Are better than white;
But ribbons will fade
And trophies grow old.
Money’s soon spent
And fame soon grows cold.

The important things, baby,
Are not ribbons or pins,
And sometimes it’s really
The loser who wins.
Now here are the things
Most important, it’s true,
Your 4-H experience
Has accomplished for you.

You’ve seen how a business
Meeting is run.
This knowledge will help you
In years to come.
You’ve conquered the fear
Of addressing a crowd.
You’ve learned how to stand up
And talk nice and loud.

Patience you’ve learned
In your projects, too,
As well as some skills
That will always help you.
You’ve learned the fine feeling
It gives you to lend
A glad helping hand
To a stranger or friend.

You’ve learned to cooperate
With majority rule …
To give in with grace
And not be the fool
Who always must have
Her very own way,
Be it in club work,
In school or at play.

You’ve learned how to lose
Without making a ‘beef.’
You know the judge judges
To his best belief.
You’ve learned how to win
Without boasting too loud.
A kid can lose friends
If she’s overly proud.

Those are the things
Most important to you.
You’ll remember and use them
All your life through.
They’ll help you become
A mighty fine woman.
They’ll do more for you
Than a prize ever can.”

We haven't had a lot of time this year to smoke and BBQ and Type 2 has me missing BBQ sauce like crazy. I found this awesome BBQ marinade at a local butcher shop, zero total carbs. Marinated for 30 minutes on each side and then pressure cook on high for 32 minutes in the instapot. BBQ needs are satisfied.

Corn should not be a main ingredient in rabbit feed. But who of us out there just have rabbits? This will effect the cost and availability of food from our pets and livestock to our own dinner plates.

https://www.agriculture.com/news/business/china-buys-400-million-of-us-corn

Importers are adding to the mountain of U.S. corn already headed to China with the purchase of 1.36 million tonnes of corn for delivery in the marketing year that opens September 1.

Back Yard Meat Breeder That Fell In Love

As a teenager on my parents farm my passion for rabbits started with a solid black meat mutt named Koo who was a beloved indoor pet. I really had not considered owning another rabbit until 2006 when I heard the word cancer. Rabbit was a dietary recommended meat.

Rabbit is higher in protein than other meats, lower in fat, and has less calories. It is one of the best white meats available on the market today! The meat has a high percentage of easily digestible protein. Protein is needed in the diet for healthy cellular processes and functions. The body needs protein for tissue development, repair and maintenance. For overall health and proper functioning, the human body must have protein.

Rabbit meat is almost cholesterol free and low in sodium and there for very heart patient friendly. The calcium and phosphorus contents of this meat are more than any other meat. Phosphorus helps in bone health along with calcium, and also helps to regulate fluids. Potassium also helps with fluid regulation and helps remove salts from the body Other vitamins and minerals, which are needed by the body in small amounts, are also present in rabbit meat. These include copper, zinc and iron. Copper is necessary for cellular growth and development and is taken in through diet since the body cannot produce this mineral. Zinc is important to boost the immune system and calcium absorption while iron is important in the production of red blood cells and the distribution and absorption of oxygen throughout the body.

Rabbit contains selenium that works as an antioxidant to remove free radicals before they can do damage to your body. Some types of cancer, as well as the ravages of aging, can be battled with selenium. Selenium is also very important in maintaining good thyroid functioning and supporting a healthy immune system.
